should i be getting in trouble for this? (self.starbucksbaristas)

sorry if my wording is off and how rambling this is i just woke up. so two days ago i went into the doctors appointment for a routine follow up and i had requested the day off from work. everything went fine until she found something that really concerned her. she wanted to do a minor surgery on it asap and scheduled me for two weeks out. i messaged my manager asking if he could possibly not schedule me on that day and the day after, no answer.

a few hours after i got a call from my doctor and they let me know they had an opening the next day (yesterday) and wanted to get me in. i told my manager and he told me to find coverage. so i spent the whole day stressed out texting everyone i worked with and posting on my shift swap facebook looking for anyone to cover my shift yesterday and my one today. the procedure was on my shoulder so i was told to rest the day after and be extra careful because of my stitches.

i found someone to cover yesterday and i was able to go to the doctor. then my manager texted asking if i was going to come in the next day or did i find coverage. i hadn’t found anyone yet so i let him know that but in the same text i reminded him that i was advised to rest and will be doing that.

fast forward to this morning. i haven’t found coverage but i want to let myself heal so i call out. my manager answered and i told him i’m calling out sick to rest. he sounds annoyed and tells me i can’t use sick pay because that’s for acute sickness, i understand that and agree. then he tells me because i knew i’d need this time off and didn’t find coverage this is considered a no call no show and i’ll be written up for it.

that’s where i’m confused, i’ve been in contact with him and even was on the phone with him and he says it’s a “no call” i just feel like i shouldn’t be reprimanded for taking time to heal. i’m not sure though i can’t find any no call no show starbucks policy online.

From the Starbucks Sick Time FAQ available on the Partner Hub: "What are allowed uses of Partner & Family Sick Time? -Your existing health condition, including: mental or physical health, injury or health condition; to obtain medical diagnosis, care, or treatment (including home care) for same; or for preventive medical care or routine medical appointments...."

This is absolutely an approved use of sick time, and you are absolutely allowed to call out without advanced notice if it would have been impossible to give in advance for the purposes of sick time. Your manager is wrong, and you should call partner resources.

thank you so much! i couldn’t log into the partner hub on my computer for some reason so thank you for posting that. i’m going to compose an email probably since i’m pretty emotional about this and then i’ll try and call partner resources

Please don't work for these people. There are so many companies that genuinely attempt to treat their employees right (Trader Joe's, Costco...). Starbucks is such a negative work environment.

Your manager is definitely in the wrong here as others have said. You needed emergency minor surgery which would definitely classify as you being able to use sick time and also your manager should have stepped in to find coverage - when you call out sick the burden for coverage is on them and not on you so you can rest and recover.

I would just state, if you plan on missing 3+ days you should file a Medical LOA with Sedgwick to excuse the absences and cya. It's paperwork, but then your SM has no leg to stand on. I'm sorry you have such a bad manager & wish you a speedy recovery!

Your manager is the one supposed to find coverage. It’s in the handbook.

You should call Sedgwick even if the leave is for a short period of time. An approved leave of absence would guarantee that your manager can’t fire you for it. However, you’d have to go on disability instead of sick time (which you totally qualify for).
