Need to call out but don't want to get in trouble (Advice?) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ElectronicEdge292
Hey fellow Baristas I need some advice.
I've been up all night with food poisoning and can't stay out of the bathroom. I have a shift tonight starting around four, can't remember exact time at the moment. But i need some advice for calling out. I tried calling my store and found out who the shift is but got hung up on in the middle of trying to explain the situation and ask who isn't working tonight so I could try and find coverage. It's too early in the morning to call my SSV. So I left her a detailed text and plan on calling her later but I need sleep at some point. Also I don't have the numbers of many baristas so I can't really call them to find coverage. I'm just really confused and I'm not sure what step to take next? Do I try calling the store again and getting this info? (The morning shifts aren't the friendliest) Just need some direction.

You need to call the store and tell them you are calling out due to illness. Coverage isn't your responsibility, it's nice of you to try to find coverage, but it ultimately falls on management to find substitute coverage.

Thank you! I did call the store back but my SM said that it is within my responsibility to find coverage. I'm afraid to go against her word.

I believe there is somewhere in the partner hub that states the rules about it (could probably find it with a quick Google search) but since you're sick it isn't your responsibility to find coverage. Maybe send a ss of where it says that and if they still give you shit go above them or call ethics

In no way are you responsible for finding coverage for yourself when you are sick. Call the store. Speak to a shift, let them know you are sick and wont be in for your shift. That is it. Period. Do not let anyone bully you into finding your own coverage. If it persists call the partner center and report your manager.

It is only your responsibility to find coverage if you're calling off for personal reasons. Your manager is trying to shove her work off on you. She cannot punish you for not trying to find coverage, and if she does anyway, call partner resources or contact your district manager.

That is not true. Just pull it up in partner guide. Straight up says if you're sick it is their responsibility. Call Partner Contact Center tomorrow.

If you’re throwing up, your unable to go to work. People in my district have actually been fired for going in to work sick.
Just call your store and ask to speak to that shift on duty (or better if manager is in) , let them know of the situation, and then boom. Trust me, as long as you’re not a serial offender, you’re fine.

I literally just signed a paperwork on this exact thing earlier. This is from the exact Starbucks rules, and I don’t have it on me but it states that it is NOT your job to find coverage during an illness. If your SM says otherwise, he/she is wrong.
