So a customer came in with fake money and when I told them it was fake money, they acted like a child and saying use the pen... I called my lead and they said just take it... so what is the policy if a customer gives fake money?
bottlehalffull343 points1y ago
I feel like "dont take it" should be pretty obvious
Hazel_is_Trans [OP]90 points1y ago
I didn't but Manger or lead said too and they deal with it later
sweet-seat202 points1y ago
sign out of your drawer, ask them to sign into theirs and see if they still want you to take it 🤪 you get in big trouble in these parts if a counterfeit bill is found in your drawer.
echowolf933 points1y ago
You definitely shouldn’t take it, but it would actually take a lot of resources to find who actually accepted it. If it rarely happens, it’s not worth the investigation. They also can’t assume that just because it’s your till, someone else didn’t accept it even though the policy is that only you use it. One example I can think of was that a partner was using the managers numbers to give customers free drinks. Corporate launched an investigation (without the managers knowledge) and fired the partner who was giving out the beverages. Even though it was the managers numbers, they need to be absolutely positive who actually did it.
philosopher_cat_lady13 points1y ago
Not to mention that unless the till is counted (and any counterfeit bill noticed) each time a new person signs into it, it's kind of pointless.
Hazel_is_Trans [OP]-3 points1y ago
I was sign in to the leads (the person who took it)drawer
PM_your-pickles1 points1y ago
Well, at least it absolves you from blame
philosopher_cat_lady27 points1y ago
Your manager is horrible too. Report this to your district manager. We're not allowed to give free drinks to people paying with counterfeit money. If the customer is doing it knowingly, it's a crime.
existenaliens12 points1y ago
Especially if you give them change! It's as though you paid the person to steal from the company.
philosopher_cat_lady2 points1y ago
LOL. I didn't think about that
ImpressionMammoth133 points1y ago
If a customer hands you a fake bill, it’s better to say you need another form of payment or that you can’t break it. Making the accusation leads to an uncomfortable situation that can quickly escalate. I’m mentioning this for your safety and not having people scream at you over a scam, not to correct you. :)
But for actual policy, it’s to not accept the tender. You were correct.
Maximum294528 points1y ago
you don’t accept the fake bill as tender, but i’m pretty sure you are not supposed to give it back. i thought you had to report fakes and give them to a bank or something desperately
lewabwee15 points1y ago
This is something I’ve been told before too but I can never tell what Starbucks is going to ask from us. They’re so ridiculous sometimes.
philosopher_cat_lady10 points1y ago
Oops, I gave a counterfeit bill back to a customer one time. My shift supervisor had told me we can't accept counterfeit bills, which I thought meant we literally couldn't take them and keep them (and report them). It seems like a dangerous policy to require baristas to keep counterfeit bills. If a customer is intentionally trying to pay with one and you notice that it's fake and don't accept it, they could very well ask for it back and get upset if you refuse to give it back to them. Also, it provides an opportunity for fraud from the barista's side too: all a barista would have to do is write on a bill with a Sharpie, claim that the bill's fake, and slip it into their pocket.
lewabwee5 points1y ago
Yeah if the person got mad it would be unsafe to keep it for sure. I wouldn’t get onto anyone for giving a fake bill back I’m just pretty sure you’re not supposed to.
ImpressionMammoth6 points1y ago
I never heard of that before but I’m definitely going to ask my manager about it because that makes a lot of sense.
Maximum294512 points1y ago
i’m a former shift, but my manager mentioned that the FBI takes counterfeit money really seriously and tracks down people who make it, so reporting it/ having the actual counterfeit bill made sense
tippinfedora1 points1y ago
Secret Service gets involved too
Anxiousurca2 points1y ago
i’d give it back because not giving it back can start more problems and i don’t think it’s specifically written anywhere to not give it back. Just be like “oh i think you should turn this into the bank because it’s not real.”
mylegalusername2 points1y ago
Depends on the business, but we prefer not to allow it to escalate if it doesn’t have to. Casinos, banks, etc. will confiscate it.
philosopher_cat_lady6 points1y ago
It happened to me one time that I marked a $20 bill and the ink turned black. I told the customer their bill was counterfeit. They were surprised. I told them they should give it to their bank. They handed me another $20 bill which was real.
Frosty-Shelter73724 points1y ago
That’s what I’m terrified of!! Any business or transactions could (accidentally) give me a fake 20 and then I look sus
philosopher_cat_lady6 points1y ago
Happens all the time, there is counterfeit money in circulation. That's why it's important to mark your bills $20 or larger or look for the iridescent, color-changing "20" on $20 bills. They change from green to gold depending on which angle the light's hitting them. Using a counterfeit bill caused George Floyd's death.
sero5074-3 points1y ago
You sound so pleasant to be around omg /gen/pos 🥺🥺🤍
Batgrill2 points1y ago
Why are you being downvoted?
sero50743 points1y ago
I guess redditor don’t like positively
sero50743 points1y ago
Idk, I was Being genuine
Batgrill3 points1y ago
That's what I figured 🤷♀️ (:
philosopher_cat_lady19 points1y ago
Oh. My. God. Your lead is horrible. The policy is not to take the money. Because it's not money. And Starbucks is a business.
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
Did you put the bill in your drawer or did you put it under the counter or something? You wouldn't wanna accidentally give that bill to a customer. And your manager needs to be able to find it in order to report it.
Hoax_Pudding_Cup18 points1y ago
Not gonna lie, I'm pretty sure it's a federal crime to have fake printed money. Monopoly money is one thing, but if it was deposited and sent to the bank, your shift or SM is gonna have a very stern talking to, if not termination.
Efficient_Falcon75846 points1y ago
100% a crime
Frosty-Shelter737214 points1y ago
Fuck starbucks thats why I quit. The customer always gets their way even when breaking the fucking law. A karen could punch me in the face and cut my achilles but I would still have to hobble to the cafe to apologize for being in her way. “The customer is always right” policy is outdated. I never want to work for stabucks again and you just solidified it. Call HR, accepting fake money is illegal and it will fall back on you even if they promise it won’t.
hellokitty193911 points1y ago
How did you know it was fake?
Hazel_is_Trans [OP]61 points1y ago
It felt weird and had a water mark with message that said not legal tender
hellokitty193947 points1y ago
OMG - your manager is ridiculous.
ItzBoogieMan10 points1y ago
I once took an American 20, it was crisp new so I thought it was all good. Looked at it clearly later and it had Russian writing all over it lmao
Hazel_is_Trans [OP]7 points1y ago
Same one I think
chellichelli8 points1y ago
Give it back to them and say you can’t take it, and then, because we’re assuming positive intent, recovery right now their drink. (The cost of drink ingredients is less than taking the counterfeit and giving them real money as change.)
Gameb0i60 points1y ago
Right now recovery. I haven’t touched that button. I never touch it. I’ve been told it’s best not to touch it ever. So I don’t.
chellichelli1 points1y ago
I understand some people don’t feel comfortable with their own judgement on when to use it, but tbh i use it at least once a shift.
Gameb0i61 points1y ago
I got a corrective action for using it too much. My whole store was under investigation. Be careful. Cuz they can pull up records of every transaction you did and how much was comped. So after that incident everyone at my store rarely touches it. We train newbies to never touch it unless instructed to my a manager.
WesternEvery17796 points1y ago
I would say I can't accept this tender. It doesn't meet our standards. Do you have another form of payment? If they don't just give them the drink for free. It's better than them getting real cash as change and a free drink.
crkybnsjr1 points1y ago
truuu just right now recovery
middlenutmania5 points1y ago
Double confirmed as a fake since they tell you to use the pen. There are common counterfeiting techniques to make the bill pass the pen test like spraying it with hairspray
skeletaldecay2 points1y ago
Washing out $1s then printing a higher denomination on top.
mylegalusername5 points1y ago
In short, just say you cannot verify the bill and ask if they have another form of payment. If they question it, just repeat it. I got the counterfeit pens for my store after we had like three fake 20’s in a month. If you do accept it, treat it normally and make sure it ends up in the deposit for the bank to handle. Starbucks (or you if it happens in your life) get a tax credit in exchange for handing over fake money to get it out of circulation.
smelly-50424 points1y ago
I work for *licensed starbucks* and our policy is to just accept it, take note of what they look like, what direction they’re headed, their name, license plate (???), and then check it once they can’t see what you’re doing.

SM here- I'll say something like "oh no! Looks like someone gave you a fake bill. You might want to take this to the bank" So that it doesn't sound like I'm accusing them. 9/10 times, they act surprised and pretend to get another form of payment and never come back.
It does happen (even I've taken them by mistake) but you won't (or shouldn't) get into trouble. I'll pass the bill around for my partners to feel and see so they have a better idea next time.
Now if you take multiple, everyday for a year, maybe then you'll get in trouble 😅
Hazel_is_Trans [OP]1 points1y ago
I want to make sure I'm safe because of anxiety....
Also the lead for the afternoon took the bill....
I basically told the guy at first "looks like u gave me one of your fake bills" (I have fake 20 dollars with Chinese lettering so it looks like I'm rich) do u have any other from of payment
capybaraRage1 points1y ago
No I totally get double checking. Your lead should have handled it better for sure. Putting you in that situation wasn't cool.
Also on the Hub, look up cash handling and there's a quick reference guide called How to Determine if a Bill Meets Starbucks Standard. It says if it doesn't to hand the bill back to the customer and ask for another form of payment. To never keep the bill (for safety reasons). When to comes to fake money, it literally just says to have your SM talk to the DM (which I haven't 😅)
Long story short- you should be golden. You did everthing right. 🙂
proletarithot3 points1y ago
Corporate bux usually have agreements with whatever bank they deposit cash at. Banks essentially reimburse the value of the bill, and remove the fake bill from circulation.
You can always report the incident via the non emergency police line. Could help ID culprit if they have passed counterfeit bills at nearby businesses as well.
Anxiousurca2 points1y ago
yeah if they wanna accept counterfeit bills let them do it on THEIR till. Otherwise I treat it like maybe they “didn’t know” it was fake. Then i’m not accusing them of anything i’m just saying i can’t take the bill. How large was it?? Like are they counterfeiting fives? lol
drinkliquidclocks2 points1y ago
It's literally illegal 😂 every job I've had told me we have to call the police immediately. Obviously that's kinda dramatic though so no one really does it. Definitely not accept it though, I feel bad that you work at a store with such management.
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
You don’t take it. Your lead shouldn’t say to take it either. You can get in trouble.
Hazel_is_Trans [OP]1 points1y ago
Was my till was the leads till (I'm new sooo)
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
These customers know what they’re doing. They want to get a free drink and money from Starbucks.
Hazel_is_Trans [OP]1 points1y ago
Ehh my store gives free drinks when lie long
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
Ugh. Your store babies the customers. I guess it’s only in nyc when you can talk back to customers if you’re right.
Forever__emo1 points1y ago
I have had this happen a few times. It happened once when I was covering a store too. I found one in the drop box when I was pulling a drawer too. My manger says we deposit it as normal and the bank will handle it. That doesn’t me just accept fakes anyway because they will come back to your store again if they know you’ll accept it. Someone came back two days later and tried to use a fake. Since I let everyone know this had happened we caught them the second time around. There are a few ways to check a bill without the pen. The easiest I think is the groves on the collar. You can run your finger against it and feel the change in texture on the bill without the person even noticing you are doing it.
etsimakescoffee26131 points1y ago
That just became the lead's transaction on their till.
tittywhipp1 points1y ago
Ummm no...lol an SSV should never accept fake money
miakodank1 points1y ago
It’s illegal to accept it lol
Gameb0i61 points1y ago
I never take money if I can tell it’s fake. I just kindly tell them “I can’t verify the authenticity of this bill. Do have another form of payment?” They just leave and don’t come back. But I think your lead is in the wrong to willingly take counterfeit money.
femalehomosapien181 points1y ago
Honestly just take it cause people are crazy and you don’t wanna risk your life over $20
Sentarry1 points1y ago
I was told that one of my 5 dollar bills was fake even though I just got it as change from another store. should I keep the fake or throw it away?
KenansCloud2 points1y ago
Give it to your bank to check out
darkwolf5231 points1y ago
I feel like a no, this is fake. Is a good answer but I guess just call your district and tell them
lewabwee-10 points1y ago
You are more likely to get in trouble for refusing suspicious money than you are for taking fake money. I’m not saying they should have taken it necessarily but I’m just saying the company is ridiculous.
Hazel_is_Trans [OP]7 points1y ago
My manager said I did the right thing by informing the shift so they can handle it
lewabwee2 points1y ago
That’s good. I hear a lot of things at different stores and I don’t even know anymore sometimes. I’m glad your manager is sensible.
