What does "rehireable" status actually mean and how does it affect the application process? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by onelb_6oz
My status is "rehireable" (according to my former SM), and I put in an application on October 29th for my former store. I left this August to focus on school but unfortunately school didn't work out. One job ad (on Indeed) was posted 30+ days ago and the ad said that 10+ hires were available. This ad was "actively reviewed by employer 7 days ago". Another ad was placed 17 days ago, which is well after I put in my application.

I had called several times, and according to the ASM/SM (she's transitioning \[not the same SM I mentioned up top\]), it took her a couple weeks to look at the application. I called again the next week, and she told me, "if I want to hire you, I will call you". I feel like that is her professional way of saying, "no, I won't rehire you, but I can't actually say that". This ASM/SM and I have had problems since I was hired back in 2014. I can edit my post and add to that if the details are relevant, but trying to keep this short. All I know so far is that a week or two ago the ASM/SM said she was onboarding a couple people (she told me that when I asked about my application), and that a couple baristas (still at the store; we are good friends) have said that they are drowning and they need desperately need experienced baristas. Apparently, the baristas that have been hired lately have been all high school kids that quit shortly after onboarding, or are always late, etc. I am really leaning towards calling the PCC and putting in another complaint, but I want to make sure I get my facts straight. Would being "rehireable" fast-track my application status?

TL;DR, I feel like I may be being discriminated against (again) and I am really leaning towards calling the PCC and putting in another complaint, but I want to make sure I get my facts straight. Would being "rehireable" fast-track my application status?

I’d drop it and find another job. Calling, saying they are discriminatory, stopping in, etc are not generally the way to get hired/rehired.

Well yeah, but *highly doubt* I'm going to get rehired. I put my application in a month ago and hiring is still going on. My store is small and the ASM/SM has made it clear she isn't going to hire me. Why not? There's nothing current in my record (my last write up was over 5 years ago, and it was a stupid one). I haven't had any performance complaints. My last one-on-one was good. It's not the first time I've had complaints similar to this and I feel Starbucks should be aware that things like this are continuing to happen at my store. I'm not the only partner that has had issues, and I'm not the last.

So, move on. There is an abundance of jobs right now.

That's the thing though, not where I live. It's a small town, but the largest metropolitan area within 3 hours. There are jobs, sure, but they're really picky about who they hire. I have a lot of Healthcare education but not a lot of work experience, which is making things difficult. Starbucks is only my 3rd real job, and it's the one I was at the longest. I'm also not in a position to relocate. Since the end of September, I've put in applications that I'm eligible for and not, in town and in other (smaller) towns. I'm 3 hours away from any major city, so it's not like I can commute. I've gotten one call back. One. I scored a temp job 2 weeks ago, but it's only for a month.

No it’s not gonna fast track you, all it means is you left in good standing with the company.

Okay, thank you. I just feel really bad because it seems like my former store could really use me. I have seen the DT lines and its absolutely chaotic (ofc its busier this time of year, but still). I honestly don't think I'm going to get rehired, which is a huge bummer. I do feel like I am being discriminated against. The ASM/SM is choosing to hire unreliable people with no experience over a barista that has 6.5 years of experience who could really help the store. Do you think its worth it to put in another complaint or just drop this and continue to look for another job?

In what way are you being discriminated against?
onelb_6oz [OP] -1 points 1y ago
There is no foreseeable reason to *not* hire me, especially since the store is desperate for baristas and they're hiring people with literally no experience over me. I haven't had writeups in years, I'm the third-most experienced barista in the store (not including management), I only called out when I was sick, and have always covered shifts way out of my availability. The ad said they are looking for day shift and night shift, so I put my availability as 3am to 6pm, which is more than my availability last time. The ASM/SM in question had tried several times in the past to get me fired, confirmed by another store manager.

Look, I'm not trying to be mean, but you're not going to be REHIRED at this particular store. Think logically--if your boss has a personal vendetta or just simply dislikes you, you're just not going to get rehired at this particular location. They're probably not discriminating against you--they just don't like you and it seems like NOTHING is going to change that. From what you've posted so far, they would rather suffer than have you back working there.

Regardless of how perfect a fit you are (extra availability, lack of write-ups, rapport with other partners), your SM doesn't think you are. And as you've probably realized, clearly your SM has the final say. You said there is no "foreseeable reason", there actually is--your SM dislikes you.

Rehiring means you can apply to any Starbucks and there isn't anything causing an automatic denial for rehiring. I'd suggest you apply to any Starbucks but here. If you can't, then find something else.

I meant discrimination in terms of a protected class - like you have reason to suspect you aren’t being rehired because of your gender, race, sexual identity etc. If your SM decides they personally don’t like working with you, they don’t have to hire you.

If they can’t have a honest discussion about the problem they have with you, they’re probably doing you a favour by not hiring you anyway. It’s not discrimination if they just don’t want to hire you.
