Can I take a leave of absense? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by New_Consequence_5184
My grandmother lives a couple states east of me and has had alzheimers for a long time, and is nearing the real end here (like in the next 2 months). She only remembers me, my dad, and my grandpa and I want to take these few months and be with her and make sure there's someone there she knows when she finally does pass. Is this something I can apply for a leave of absence for? How would I do that? If not, can I resign over text? I'm on vacation for Thanksgiving and I get really bad phone anxiety lol. Any advice is appreciated.

TL:DR My dad's mom is dying in another state, can I take a leave of absence to take care of her?

You should call Sedgwick and ask them about it. I think you can for medical needs of family members and I’m not 100% sure. You can always apply and the worst they can do is turn you down. You can call them even if you’re not in the store as well.

Do I need to talk to my manager first, or can I just call Sedgwick?

If Sedgewick denies you, ask your store manager if you can quit on good terms and come back when you are ready

You can just call Sedgwick. After talking to them if they tell you that that would qualify (youd need to get paperwork for it to be approved) you could text your manager, but they will notify the manager as well.

As long as you have worked for the company for 6 months, you can take a leave.!

Yeah, call Sedgwick. I know you can take leave to take care of an immediate family member, but honestly I'm not sure if they consider grandparents to be "immediate". But still, it's worth checking out. But just be aware that you only get like 60% (I think?) of your normal pay and that check doesn't even get sent to you until like 6-10 weeks after your leave is officially approved.

As far as resigning via text, that is always an option. But don't expect to get a good reference. If you don't care about that, then yeah you can totally do that - I mean, wtf they gon do about it lol
