“Iced chai doesn’t have water.” “Yes it does.” GIRLLL (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tpski1993
Had to share this story. Was in a rush. Figured what the hell, instead of driving down the road to my usual Starbucks, I’d give the kiosk inside the local grocery a go.

Ordered a venti iced chai. Simple right?

Barista begins to fill the final 1/3 of the cup on top of the ice with water.

Me: “Did you just put water in that?”

Barista #1 - “Yeah, why?”

Me: “Iced chai doesn’t have water.”

Barista #2 - “It actually does.”

Me: - “I actually worked at Starbucks for eight years.”

OMFG BRUHHH WATER IN ICED CHAI… BA-BYE-
tpski1993 [OP] 194 points 1y ago
I was literally shaken. AND HOW LONG HAS THIS MONSTROSITY BEEN GOING ON?
National-Chance2406 131 points 1y ago
dude yeah that is ridiculous😭 i get how ppl make mistakes but water in an iced chai😭😭😭 i feel ice is the “water factor” already and just adding more water to that is gag worthy
tpski1993 [OP] 97 points 1y ago
I haven’t worked at the bux in months and still remember every single recipe 😂 it’s the most basic one next to a damn black coffee which what made it even worse
National-Chance2406 25 points 1y ago
i have 2 days left of work until my 2 week period is up, this place is mad and im ready to leave for good
bryceofswadia 22 points 1y ago
You are correct. The reason there is no water in an iced chai is due to the fact that the ice itself is considered “water” because it will melt.
canidieyet_ 19 points 1y ago
to be fair, when i was still training my trainer told me chai always got half water, half milk. she didn’t tell me that iced chais only got milk. i definitely made about 15 iced chais with water before someone saw me do it and tell me they DONT get water 💀
Sanguine_Tides 2 points 1y ago
Lol I've never done that 💀 only forgot to put water in the Chai like a million times...still trying to fix that one...
Webshooter38 2 points 1y ago
Wait it doesn't actually have water? I thought my kiosk was doing it wrong by not putting water in it lol
coffeesparklez 8 points 1y ago
The hot chai still gets water. I had to correct my store manager with the iPad recipe my last day. :D

He started yelling about the "Mandala" effect happening and that we definitely had literature that took the water out of the Chai. I then had to explain that a mandala was a symmetrical image, where as Nelson MANDELA was a politician that everyone mistook for dead before he actually died and shocked the world.

He argued that I was incorrect again and man, this is why I quit.
sass_mouth39 2 points 1y ago
Imagine being that wrong and that loud about it smh

It most definitely gets half hot water and half milk.

As someone who was once a green bean, I put water in iced chais for soooo long before a customer just kept coming back for it to be remade. I was not trained on iced chais, my trainer skipped right over it (it’s kind of really important, clearly.)
imlysscining 4 points 1y ago
And I was sOOOO good at literally everything else 2 months in. Had me on DTB and I would smash those times. Iced chai had me in a chokehold apparently 😂
National-Chance2406 3 points 1y ago
see i never added water to the hot chais when i first started and then i started adding a splash of hot water
MungotheSquirrel 155 points 1y ago
I vividly remember my trainer teaching me iced chais over 9 years ago.

I pumped the chai and then stopped.
"Do iced chais get half water too?"
"They get ice."
"Of course, but do they also get water?"
"What is ice made of?"
"Water?"
"Do you think they should get two kinds of water?"
"Uh...no?"
"Genius."

Never forgot it.
cecicoot 29 points 1y ago
“Two kinds of water” had me lmfao in my cafe just now 🤣
tpski1993 [OP] 14 points 1y ago
I love them
GerbilFeces 12 points 1y ago
do strawberry acais need two kind of waters? This isnt the zinger you think it is
tenthwalker 7 points 1y ago
Yes, cuz that syrupy consistency is vile until you dilute it to hell with water and then ice
ahhpoo 1 points 1y ago
See, I know you’re talking about the strawberry açaí, but this same statement could be made about the chai. This is just a subjective argument so it’s not really convincing, ya know?
morecowbell03 1 points 1y ago
See but, youll remember the conversation about it and that's the important part 😉
uh-no-why 7 points 1y ago
That’s the explanation I use currently (worded slightly different) for my trainees and it honestly works
macci-hot-o 141 points 1y ago
I know someone who always tried to put steamed milk and espresso in iced chai because the word latte confused them
tpski1993 [OP] 42 points 1y ago
STOPPPPP
macci-hot-o 21 points 1y ago
A MESS

imboredwassup 3 points 1y ago
i still keep doing this cuz i miss the word “green”. i always quickly glance at cups and it would make life so much easier if they just called it a “matcha” 😭
Ashesremindme 7 points 1y ago
A green bean once handed me an iced matcha latte, and I was like, why is it this color? It looks weird. I asked if she used a different milk, I looked at the matcha powder to see if it was a weird batch, finally I told her to walk me through how she made it. She did the same thing you described with putting in espresso because of the word latte 😂

I don't think the recipe for chai lattes has changed in 20 years, lol.
tpski1993 [OP] 29 points 1y ago
Funny cause they both looked about 12 yo
shikiP 48 points 1y ago
on behalf of grocery store baristas im sorry
tpski1993 [OP] 20 points 1y ago
Apology accepted…without the water, though, please 😂
shikiP 19 points 1y ago
my store refuses to use water in hot chais and stopped me when putting hot water in and told me we dont do that here. lol. yeah its another world over here
tpski1993 [OP] 11 points 1y ago
I would have pulled out the recipe card and stated we actually do DO that here. Is says Starbucks above our kiosk right?
shikiP 8 points 1y ago
they said we dont do that here and that the dm gave them approval. lol. i gave up
Loh-Doh 5 points 1y ago
Putting water into chai is a tragedy and Starbucks should be penalized for trying to make me do it. It's miles better without the water.
haydensidun 27 points 1y ago
Made this mistake the first time I made an iced chai. I was corrected immediately and I think about that correction every time I make an iced chai.

I really hope that stuck with the kiosk baristas.
tpski1993 [OP] 15 points 1y ago
Based on the looks on their faces, it will be
SyerenGM 14 points 1y ago
I worked in a grocery one and I knew this, HOWEVER!!! Most of these baristas don't get 1/3 the training you guys do. We're pretty much told to look at some cards for a few hours, ran through a basic latte hot/cold, and a macchiato, after that we are supposed to be floor ready. It's insane.
tpski1993 [OP] 4 points 1y ago
I’ve actually worked in both. Started at a kiosk and my training personally was very extensive. Very in depth. But I had an awesome department manager. Once I relocated, I was placed in a standalone store. It all boils down to your manager and trainer.
SyerenGM 2 points 1y ago
Yeah I guess it depends where. My training was barely there at all, I trained myself by taking the cards home and making my own cheat sheet... I ended up knowing the recipes better than any of the other staff. In fact they wanted me to be the next lead and trainer but I ended up leavin for a better job lol.
tpski1993 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Training is so hit and miss. It’s so important and weeds out the ones who get the job and think it’s just pouring coffee and sitting pretty all day
elrobolobo 11 points 1y ago
I thought this was going to be a "Ice is aktchually water" posts
tpski1993 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
No. Just the classic ill advised kiosk staff
sailorgrumpycat 10 points 1y ago
i always tell green beans the ice is the water for the iced one.
tpski1993 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
green beans 😂
sero5074 6 points 1y ago
WHAT.
tpski1993 [OP] 7 points 1y ago
Bunch of sinners
myeyehurtsrn 5 points 1y ago
What!! I literally never knew this lol I think everyone else in my store puts water in it too? I'm kinda shook ngl but it makes sense because of the ice I guess!
tpski1993 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Your trainer has failed you all…
myeyehurtsrn 2 points 1y ago
I never actually got officially trained to be fair 😶 Never did my coffee tasting either haahha. Joined when we were coming out of kickdown in UK so things were a little rushed I guess. We're doing those things now though, and have an official trainer. Although I'm going to ask her tomorrow how she would makes an iced chai because I want to see what she says!
tpski1993 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Lol test her to filth
csaine 4 points 1y ago
The ice is the water.
tpski1993 [OP] 5 points 1y ago
“NOT AT THIS KIOSK!”
lea-oppalove 4 points 1y ago
See this is why I don't bother with Starbucks kiosks... they never make my drinks right 😭
tpski1993 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I’ve been to one other across town and it’s actually pretty great! I think it’s just hit and miss based on management and training.
darkwolf523 2 points 1y ago
Oh boy reading the title was fun. I was about to rip someone for this 😂
bblonde_ish 2 points 1y ago
i got an iced chai from a starbucks inside a krogers last year, but didnt watch them make my drink bc its an iced chai, simple right? i got to my car and it tasted like they added water to it. it was disgusting. i get how it can be confusing to a green bean maybe. the hot chai gets water so why not right? yeah no 😂
littolexi 2 points 1y ago
WAIT HUHHHH
No_End_7351 2 points 1y ago
As a green bean way back when I was alone when my shift was having a heart to heart with the other partner we were closing with in the back. No biggie. We were slow and I felt I had the hang of it. Ooh boy was I in for it!

A woman comes in and orders a "Grande Dirty Chai.". I had never heard of that so I asked her what was in it. She said that it was a Chai latte with an espresso shot. No problem. I ring her up and make my way down to the bar. Little did I know that my brain would completely short circuit in those few short steps from the register to the Mastrena.

I start steaming the milk and pulling her shot. Right about then for whatever reason "Green Tea" and "Chai Tea" decided to meld in my thought process. So I put 4 pumps of Chai...and some hot water...and 4 pumps of Classic...and 2 scoops of Matcha...and the shot...and then the milk. Alarm bells are ringing in my head "I don't think this is right, it probably should look like this." but it was drowned out by "Hey, I've got this! It's a 'Dirty' Chai right? Maybe it's supposed to be pea green and smell like an old shoe."

I hand her the drink. She takes one sip of it and says "I have been an elementary school nurse for over 20 years and have dealt with the smells and subsequent tastes in the air of dealing with small children who are sick. This is without a doubt the foulest thing I've ever tasted in my entire life.". I freeze. Just then my shift comes out of the back room and asks if everything was alright. I sheepishly admit that I may have made her drink incorrectly. The lady, to her credit, politely asks if I'm new. I say yes. My shift asks me what I put in the drink. I've never seen someone's lip curl up as fast as hers did. The other partner is back on the floor and they start remaking her drink. My shift hands me 3 recovery certificates (yeah that's how long ago this was) and has me offer them to the nurse which she happily accepts.

Lucky for me the customer was extremely understanding and we all had a good chuckle about it the next time she came in. Moral of the story : If you aren't 100% sure - ask!
tpski1993 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Totally agree! When I first started, I was constantly asking for help/had the recipes by my side just in case.
Brgnbo 2 points 1y ago
I remember when I started I didn’t know hot chais were half water. I was making both hot and iced with just milk lmao I didn’t learn until a customer came in and asked for a hot chai no water and I was like … it doesn’t come with water. He came back and was like there’s definitely water in here and I never felt so stupid
Beautiful-Director 2 points 1y ago
But do the hot ones get cut with water still??
YoshisShadow 2 points 1y ago
Yes.
SelloutDude 2 points 1y ago
My Tarbucks TL (that was hired three months ago with zero coffee experience) did this the other day and I had to correct them.
tpski1993 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
But didn’t it make you feel 👑
SelloutDude 4 points 1y ago
I definitely got irritated because this person is my direct supervisor, makes 33% more than me, and I’m having to train them for no extra pay.
tpski1993 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I fully get it 100%. Been there my friend! I wasn’t “recognized” until relocating and then became a manager before leaving the company. But my prior bux was stacked with amazing people, an amazing TL, the works. The store i moved to when moving was another story. They made drinks wrong constantly. The store was filthy. I literally came in and they had me retrain their entire staff and became manager because the one they had was garbage.

Look into other stores or even kiosks. Don’t settle. Know what you can bring to the table.

The ice is the water. That’s how I train new baristas. But the hot chai doesn’t get water anymore either. They changed the recipe around 1-2 years ago.
tpski1993 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I’ve never heard of a recipe change with the hot chai tea latte and I stopped working there roughly 4 months ago.

I just now looked on the website to order and it still comes with water added in.
Necessary_Low939 2 points 1y ago
I guess they lied to me. 😒😒 I will tell them that tomorrow.
Necessary_Low939 1 points 1y ago
I see. I started working there again during the summer and someone asked why I’m putting water in the hot chai. They said it doesn’t get water anymore, so I stopped.
orangeygirly 1 points 1y ago
hahahah i did this my first three months
Saradigm 1 points 1y ago
The ice cubes. That’s the water. Lmao.
dchance08 1 points 1y ago
Wait so does it get water or not?
Superduperfreddy 1 points 1y ago
No but seriously that just sounds nasty like wtf , why would you water it down.
Brilliant-Wasabi-706 1 points 1y ago
wait so does it have water or not
tpski1993 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Iced chai tea lattes do not have water.
It’s chai, milk, ice.

Hot chai tea lattes have chai, hot water, and milk. Some prefer no water in their hot chai, but the usual standard for hot is with water.
spookbish69 1 points 1y ago
I came from a kiosk to a corporate and everything is done different in a kiosk, mainly (IMO) it’s done to save space (ie more concentrated things are smaller packages and you just have to add water) but there’s some things that are just different hence the water and iced chai. But that’s just how the barista was most likely taught
tpski1993 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I’ve worked at both. I have never seen or heard of water in a iced chai.
dogsofwintergaming 1 points 1y ago
I put water in mine, but only if I'm making my own. I do the pumps of chai then like just a couple tablespoons of hot water and swirl it. Actually is really good that way.

but it’s standard? 🤨
FfierceLaw 14 points 1y ago
Let customers order it “no water” if they want but water in a hot is standard. In an iced one, the water is the ice it gets shaken with
Pete-_-Zahut 5 points 1y ago
Shaken?
FfierceLaw 2 points 1y ago
Sorry had a brain malfunction, slipped into matcha. I don’t drink either but I do know the difference. But someone has probably ordered a shaken chai
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
[deleted]
GarbageValuable1888 13 points 1y ago
this is also bad because the calorie amounts will be different the way you make it. Follow standard.
Pete-_-Zahut 10 points 1y ago
I used to do the same, but not cutting it with water really does affect the taste of the drink. And if a customer were to go to another location, then their experience would be widely different.
iWantToBeARealBoy 3 points 1y ago
And then some Karen will proceed to yell at every barista who makes it the *correct* way from then on.
