New partner scared to ask manager in case she already told me—how does requesting time off on the days around holidays work? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Odd_Entertainment134
Hi, I’m a bit of a chicken. My manager explained that you don’t put in time off requests for holidays and had me sign up for my day and eve on the physical sheets in the store (selected thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve). Every year, I go to Ohio for Christmas to see my extended family from the 23rd-27th, so I put in a request for then through the app assuming it made more sense than doing a request for the 23rd and another for the 26th-27th and it was denied.

A) Should I have been putting the request in for the non-Holiday days instead? I don’t know if it was denied because I put it in wrong or if I can’t get those days.

B) If yes, should I now put in said request?

I’m only at the job for a few weeks after Christmas since I’m going off to school for the spring semester so I’m heavily considering quitting early if I can’t get these days just because I rarely ever get to see my family and this would be my one shot. I’d definitely rather not have to though. Just worried I’m embarrassing myself by not understanding how to do this.

Thanks

Everyone wants those days off every single year. They’re also super busy and need to be well staffed. They get booked off months in advance. If you have holiday plans you need to protect that you made in advance, you need to tell your manager at the time of hiring (for any job). If you’re scheduled during that time (which odds are, you will be), you could potentially see if anyone is willing to cover you but generally people have festive plans and they’re not going to give up any days off. If you’re a seasonal hire, you were literally hired to basically help then haha.

Yeah, figured I’m screwed. I probably cemented being scheduled those days when I didn’t ask for them off when I was hired. Plan now is to either suck it up or be a psycho and drive home for work Christmas night then back after work on the 26th. Five hours totally driving then btw, not including going back one more time.

I need me some Christmas joy, dammit

Haha I once had a 7 hour bus journey home at 5am Christmas Eve… I finished work at 1am and went out drinking with my coworkers, I was so drunk and tired I don’t know how I got on the right bus! But you can absolutely enjoy the season, enjoy your work and have time with family, it just depends what you’re willing to sacrifice.

Haha damn, glad you didn’t end up drunk off your ass three states over for the holidays. Update, time off for 26-27 was approved! Think I earned some brownie points with my manager last week and it helped
