Soon to be returning worker and need some advice from your experience!(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by BearRillaa
To keep the post short, I use to work as an opener and did that for a year. Now I'm needing to return back to Starbucks but not sure if I can handle being an opener (various personal reasons why).
My question is, of your experiences, do you prefer a closing shift or an opening shift, and why do you prefer it? Also if you have worked BOTH as an opener and closer, how did those shifts differ and which did you prefer?

My advice rn is to have tough skin because these customers are getting meaner and just overall disrespectful… I got recorded for the first time the other day and I just closed the drive thru window and walked away cuz I was going to break down in tears cuz I was trying to help her get her order for free 😔

I'm so sorry! I definitely agree people suck though. I learned that quick my last time working as an opener but I feel confident I can handle people at this point. My attitude is a general "IDGAF" and being the size I am, luckily, people don't give me much attitude if I push push back when I need to.
Hopefully you have a supportive team that helped you out though!!

I try so hard to have that attitude but I don’t look my age and I’m short lol but they hate when I say I’m the manager cuz the answer is not changing lol yes I love my team and they stand by me all the time

It's definitely not an attitude I prefer for myself but one that, unfortunately, came about over time. Having that manager title though is a pretty dope flex I must say! Since I don't have that title I usually have to rely on my height and size to help great through to those "special" customers haha

nights are more labor/cleaning intensive, mornings are more busy/hectic — and i would take the mornings any day of the week, for sure, lol. but if you don’t wanna open and you’re unsure about closing, shoot for some mid-shifts, if your store has any!

Thanks for the input! When I was working last I was an opener and in my area the clientele had a particular..."reputation" which made working those morning shifts pretty rough. So doing more cleaning type stuff is totally ok with me! haha

i’m an opener currently and wouldn’t trade it- it works best for my personal life and with my store needs and my development for SM. however i absolutely preferred closing as a job itself. i love cleaning, getting shit done, less interactions, and i always got to set my openers up in a way i know i would like to be set up for. zero of my current closing baristas have ever opened and it shows. also, selfishly, i loved being able to sit outside in the evening/afternoons for my breaks and have the option to order takeout from some place else. that doesn’t happen @6 am… ya know?

I completely agree, I only worked 1 closing shift and the breaks were so relaxing, whereas the breaks in the morning seemed to be rushed and if you didn't keep your energy it made the rest of the morning a challenge. But thank you for your insight!!
