groupchats? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kansias
hey all! i'm a barista in canada looking for some advice.

my manager has been on a kick of telling partners we aren't allowed to have a group chat on social media. does she have a leg to stand on here or is she majorly overstepping? i assume it's the latter but i want to make sure. thanks!

hi!! my partners and i have a group chat where we communicate! sometimes openers will ask the closers questions or the whole group to see if someone has an answer as to why something wasn’t done/is missing. it’s very useful, but we also send funny videos and pictures that were taken at work :)

we do mostly the same as well. it's a smaller groupchat and i'd consider it more of a friends thing than a coworkers thing, but we do talk a lot about work. my manager knows we're unhappy with her so i think she's trying to get us to stop talking

that’s so dumb!! i hate pissy managers, they make the work environment so so toxic. i hope it gets better for you!!

thank you!! she's been doing some really shady shit lately so i hope our dm actually listens to us :(

i hope so too!! thankfully i work in a grocery store under starbucks. my manager is a gift from god, truly. we took a family photo during peak and he even got in even with a long ass mine and joked with us. i really hope you get some better treatment !! *line

at the sbux my bf works at they had to delete their group chat on 2 separate occasions bc the store manager didn’t like that they had one. they kept remaking it tho lol

i think corporate kinda banned group chats bc it can be toxic, working off the clock, not everyone involved so some feel left out, misusage, etc across the board but as long as you don’t talk about it how could she know it exist hehe.

ok interesting. can she actually enforce it/can i get in trouble for participating? i really don't care but if she's not allowed to and she does anyway you know i'll be complaining to her boss

i think best course of action is just to not talk about it with her. she can’t go thru ur phone or anything but sms can be extremely petty if they feel their power is being played with

No leg to stand on, she just needs to stay off the chat. We have two different group chats and an email group, they are all fun and helpful, partners are caring, nothing but positive. We are lucky. Every once in awhile if SM wants to make sure everyone receives a communication, he will text it to the admin to share it. But he is not a member of any of our chats

not 100% sure but i think it may be an attempt at union busting. i know a lot of SMs are a bit worried about the potential for unions (and if yours is bad then that worry would increase). i cant say for certain but that’s my first guess because i don’t believe there’s any actual rules against it

Our store manager created one for us on slack, it's quite nice I'm not sure what their problem is
kansias [OP] 1 points 1y ago
she's just the worst person i've ever had the misfortune of meeting. hates that we might be "gossiping" about her

Ugh I'm sorry, is it possible for you to transfer? Horrible coworkers just make this job so much worse
kansias [OP] 1 points 1y ago
i wish! she's already lost so many employees that she's not letting anyone transfer during the holiday season :(
