Just remember you are allowed to say no and give no explanation. If you aren’t scheduled and they need coverage, that’s on the manager not you. You aren’t obligated to cover all the shifts, especially if you need a break yourself

Honestly, I kept telling them yes and it broke me. it is your store managers job to ask other stores for ssv coverage, work the shift, or close the store. Its not your responsibility. They will most likely gas light you if you say no. Also, if you do end up saying yes all the time and then need a medical leave they won't Grant it to you. This is what happened to me. The store manager that I had waited until I was hospitalized before hiring more people to fill the spaces. The only reason they are not filling the spaces is because you are saying yes and enabling their behavior.

Don't do it. It's not your job to cover everyone else's shifts, but it IS *his* job, actually. You deserve rest just as much, if not more, than he does.

Just keep repeating "sorry, I'm not available". You have no obligation to give any more reason than that (but if you still feel pressured just say that you have "a prior commitment"... it's true, even if it's just for grocery shopping or catching up on sleep. You have needs that need to be met and can't be postponed). And part of the territory of being a SM is sometimes having to suck it up and take the clopens when you can't find coverage... and if that's really not an option, they can borrow someone from another store or even close the store if they have to. Remember, they are paid a LOT more than you and get a LOT more paid time off.

This! Just saying “sorry I’m not available” is everything they need to know. They don’t need to know the reason. I changed my schedule after the pandemic began, and all I said was “my obligations at home have changed.” They didn’t need to know anything beyond that. And then my old manager asked if I could train someone on days I wasn’t available on my schedule. “Sorry, that’s outside my availability.”

They will walk all over you if they get an inch. Please take care of yourself first!

learn how to say no and mean no. i know it’s hard when you want to come off as a hard worker and a dedicated employee but your off days need to be respected if you don’t want to work that day.

Honestly say no, there is such thing as burn out and coming from a SSV who does all shifts and my other SSV only opens it’s hard trying to stay positive and being overworked. Mental and physical health is more important!

Don’t answer. I haven’t saved the numbers of any of the supervisors or manager at my store and I have my phone set to send unknown numbers to voicemail and don’t typically check messages of unsaved numbers. I also have an issue with saying no but once I started being unavailable people don’t usually reach out to me.

Explain the terrible time you just had “helping” him out and that you “really need your day off” then don’t reply. No is the answer and he cannot force you.
rudebii 2 points 1y ago
I did this for years as a lead, they’ll just lean on your harder knowing you’ll say yes, always pick up the phone, etc.

You need a day off, so take it.
