Isolation pay? Lacking transparency from my SM (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by maddyrose43
Hi, I am a fairly new barista and I was wondering if anybody could give me some insight on the policy and/or advice. At this time I only work about two days a week, and every time I go in I ask my manager if I can disclose my vaccination, to which I am always blown off. I called out for the first time due to side effects of a medication I’m on, and the next shift I worked I was experiencing *tummy issues* that developed at work and caused me to have to leave for the bathroom pretty regularly. Because of this, my shift had me do the Covid Coach again and ultimately sent me home on a 10-day leave. My SM asked how I was the next day, and I didn’t think anything of it. My roommate also works at starbucks and had to isolate before and let me know that I should be paid for this isolation period, however, when I got my check this week I was not paid for the hours I missed. I spoke to my SM on the phone, who thought I started isolation on that shift before when I called out (but I was at work since then) told me I never get paid for isolation without a doctors note (?), and said I could only use my sick time for the missed shifts (I’m very new & work very little - this does not amount to anything significant). I am so frustrated with the lack of communication and transparency from my SM, and my roommate is confused by this as well. What do I do? Is this the actual policy, and if so, why wasn’t I informed when I was sent home? If it isn’t, who do I go to in order to dispute it to my SM?

You are required to isolate if you are experiencing one primary or two secondary symptoms of covid that are considered new or unusual for you regardless of vaccine status.

When isolated, you are eligible for catastrophe pay for any missed shifts during the 10 day isolation period if you have disclosed your vaccine status and if you have not already used it twice.

Long story short when it comes to your situation:
1. You stated that these symptoms are not new or unusual for you due to them being known side effects of the meds you had just started. Therefore, you should not be required to isolate, only not be at work until the symptoms have resolved.
2. If your SM is insistent upon you isolating, you SHOULD be being paid out for catastrophe pay due to you not having used it before AND trying to disclose your status to them multiple times.

Why have you not gotten a Covid test?

A covid test doesn’t release you from isolation. The only way to return from isolation early, per the policy, is a doctors note stating that you are safe to return to work. Any sms taking negative test results are not following proper procedure.

Not the point. We are in a pandemic and your number one job is to stay safe and insure that you are not affecting others.

after that, then you can care what Starbucks thinks.

Where did I say I don’t agree? I literally responded to this post stating what the proper starbucks protocol is.

I don't see why you'd be sent on a 10 day isolation without you yourself having covid or you coming into contact with someone who has it. That's what isolation is for. If you're just not feeling well and need to leave for that day or for the next shift the next day then that's only covered by sick pay which you need to write down in the book.

Then I’m confused why I was sent out for ten days at all! I was directed by my shift supervisor that due to symptoms I needed to be out for ten days and was out specifically on a Covid isolation despite not having direct contact at work, so I’m wondering if my shift was wrong and I should’ve only been out for that day and potentially the day after instead of the full ten days

That shift definitely made the wrong call. The covid coach should have even made it so you're fine. Cause one of the questions is if you've tested for it or come into contact with someone who has it, right? You've had neither. So I don't understand. They should have kept you on the floor unless you said you want to leave because you're not feeling well. Then you'd be able to put in for sick time for that shift and possibly the next shift if you're still not feeling well. Please talk to your manager about this situation.

You only get isolation pay if you have to self isolate due to having COVID or have had ongoing close contact with someone that has COVID. In your situation, you would have to utilize sick time

Did that recently change? I’m just confused because my roommate has been out a couple times paid for just having symptoms and not having Covid or direct exposure!
