what are w these rules ab nail polish and acrylics. bc i want to feel cute again and i cannot be the only one.
We should be able to wear gloves when we have them. the policy could be changed to accommodate this pretty easily.
edit: you all clearly are very passionate about this, and i love it, but holy moly… y’all are vicious.. i love my job and i’m good at my job. it’s my personal opinion on nails, no need to attack my position in the job or anyone else’s.
the_lady_flame47 points1y ago
sorry bestie it's a food safety hazard! you wouldn't want someone's nail polish in your drink either, lolol <3
No_Introduction8689 [OP]-43 points1y ago
but it’s not! i’ve had so many other jobs that have never had that be a thing!!
the_lady_flame20 points1y ago
sorry to burst the bubble but if that's the case then your other jobs have just been straight up not following fda food code. nail polish or artificials are permitted If And Only If you always Always have gloves on overtop
No_Introduction8689 [OP]-22 points1y ago
fda food code says that you must be wearing gloves if you have polish/acrylics. but starbucks doesn’t allow us to wear gloves unless we have an open wound. so my thing is, why can’t we wear gloves if we have them done.
caligirlthrowaway10435 points1y ago
You don’t fight it. All foodservice jobs are like this. Starbucks has no reason to change anything or accommodate for this just because someone wants their nails done. I don’t see why they would spend money on gloves for the reason of it allowing people to come to work with painted or fake nails.
BusyLeek23515 points1y ago
Not all food service ☺️
caligirlthrowaway1042 points1y ago
What would be some examples of food service that allows employees to have painted nails?
shortimmortality2 points1y ago
While working in a gas station chain deli, we were allowed to have painted as well as fake nails, the trade off was gloves on at all times (and changed frequently depending on task hygiene) It worked well, we didn't have any issues with complaints or people forgetting gloves or anything like that. I'm honestly surprised Starbucks doesn't offer the option for glove use.
No_Introduction8689 [OP]5 points1y ago
…. why wouldn’t they spend money on something that should already be readily available for all partners should they choose to wear them, nails or no nails..
caligirlthrowaway10410 points1y ago
Because partners don’t wear gloves while they work in regular circumstances. That’s what hand washing is for. They may have them available but they aren’t used as much. Starbucks has no incentive or reason to provide them for the specific reason that people want to paint their nails. It also lessens the liability for something to come off into a drink and now they have to deal with it. It’s not just a Starbucks thing, it’s a foodservice thing. All these kinds of places have these regulations that are set by government agencies.
Apprehensive_Flow2191 points1y ago
i don’t foresee the company justifying the increase in demand for disposal gloves purely for the sake of an employee’s personal aesthetic preferences.
ActivityDelicious5240 points9m ago
Serving and bartending. I served for 2 years with acrylic nails. You come in contact with people’s food, drinks, and tablewear/utensils. Never once did I have a nail fall off or chip ever.
Brgnbo30 points1y ago
Respectfully, if you want nails that bad I would get out of the fast food business. A lot of places won’t bend on it since it’s a health hazard
No_Introduction8689 [OP]3 points1y ago
not saying they will, just a thought i had. but thank you.

mrhammerant5 points1y ago
It doesn't make sense for a huge monster corporation not to accommodate sanitary hand protection.
No_Introduction8689 [OP]3 points1y ago
agreed! like even if it’s not for nails, what about the people who would prefer to wear gloves and go through the hassle of changing them??
BabySteele3 points1y ago
My store has explained they don't allow it because sometimes we just dont have to option to order new gloves for all sizes. The only ones we can consistently order are small. But for hands like me who needs L or XL, its rare
witchwitha-b13 points1y ago
i understand everyone commenting about health food codes and why gloves are unrealistic (and i don’t disagree) but i would also like to point out to everyone who says gloves cause cross contamination that i can guarantee you are not washing your hands every time you change position like you’re implying gloves should be changed. the amount of stuff i get on my hands when restocking/baring that then could very easily get into a drink or food item during the day is ridiculous. and i know that no one on this thread is washing their hands every position change so claiming someone should get a different job for pointing out a rule seems a little hypocritical… just a thought
rosebudftw11 points1y ago
Lmao ok my coworkers and I always talk about this bc it irritates us and I’ve seen other fast food workers have acrylics and many bartenders/servers I’m over it but everytime I mention it here I get downvoted. I’m going on vacation in December and I can’t wait to get acrylics for that time.
No_Introduction8689 [OP]6 points1y ago
!!!! this is such a small thing but it irks me. it’s not even like it some thing i would do all the time but it would be really nice to get a gel manicure for a week and just feel cute. we get treated like crud by the customers and a little confidence boost here and there would be really nice. i get the logistical errors and problems but starbucks being the company it is could come up w solutions to allow this. just bugs me.
rosebudftw3 points1y ago
It bugs me because I work at Starbucks and Starbucks is the dirtiest place I’ve ever worked at. I worked at a bar where sometimes roaches would end up in our ice bin and this takes the cake so it bugs me that they don’t care about cleanliness or quality of anything but omg I can’t have my nails done.
No_Introduction8689 [OP]3 points1y ago
ugh that’s gross. i see the point people are making that it could chip and end up in drinks, but also.. people don’t wash their hands like they should and it ends up all over everything. personally germs bug me more than nail polish i can see and report. can’t report invisible germs from peoples hands..
rosebudftw3 points1y ago
No literally I get it I really do! But like Starbucks really picks and choose what they think is gross lmao and I’m not quitting so I will just keep getting them on vacation and shit but ugh. I used to get acrylics every week pre Covid and now I don’t.
mrhammerant8 points1y ago
I have active psoriasis on my hands, if the Siren doesn't care about my flaky, cracking hands, she sure as fuck won't care about your pretty nails.
I care about your pretty nails. Gloves should be provided in abundance for any and every reason.
PauseAccording203 points1y ago
I wear gloves daily because I have bad eczema on my hands and the sani makes it SO bad and it hurts. If we’re able to have and order gloves for me and others with skin conditions which imo skin flakes in my drink sounds way more gross than nail polish, then why not have gloves available for the partners who want nails?
Frosty-Shelter73727 points1y ago
Bruv why is everyone downvoting and getting mad bc we want pretty nails. Obviouslyyyyy we understand food service policy but it’s dumb! And we’re allowed to think its dumb and want it to be changed. Probably won’t happen but it’s reddit. What’s the point of this sub? We vent. 🤷🏻♀️
No_Introduction8689 [OP]2 points1y ago
literally added an edit before you posted this!! people are v passionate ab this post being wrong all together…
BlackberryOpposite311 points1y ago
This is one Starbucks policy that definitely isnt dumb. If people are wearing things on their nails at work there’s a big chance it will get into people’s food and rink which is super gross. And allowing partners to wear gloves over the nails just would t work out well. You would go through so many pairs of gloves each shift and it would be pretty impossible to keep gloves stocked in all sizes all the time. What if someone came in with nail polish and the intention to wear gloves but we didn’t have the size they needed. Then we would have to send them home and be short a person. It just doesn’t make sense to allow it.
Waka_flakaflame0 points1y ago
Then I’ll make sure my nail polish chips in ur drink
decksetter6 points1y ago
To wear gloves just because you want your nails done just isn’t practical for the type of job it is. The amount of gloves you’d go through plus the different amount of sizes would be hard to consistently get supplied with all the supply issues starbs is having. Plus You’d have to change gloves AND wash your hands every time the gloves either got dirty, you moved stations, something got in them, they got punctured, etc. (if you’re only changing your gloves and not hand washing you’re ruining the point of having gloves)
+ people who are saying there’s roaches in their ice bin or bugs on their bar really need to calm the health department🤢 I don’t know how you could serve food in those conditions and have a clear conscience
chellichelli5 points1y ago
Literally no other food place place bans their employees from nail polish, even full service restaurants that should. We do not actually prepare food, we do not touch anything that a customer consumes, and there’s no reason to not allow nail polish company-wide. (There may be local differences, like there are with wearing hats, but there is no federal level standard banning nail polish.)
I wish they’d come off it and just say it’s dress code rather than blaming it on health standards.
Ok-Mix-51295 points1y ago
You don’t, it’s food safety. Literally all food service jobs have this rule. It is universal health code
No_Introduction8689 [OP]6 points1y ago
it’s universal health code to wear gloves should you have them. starbucks doesn’t allow gloves to be worn unless you have an open wound, which i get it, it requires changing them all the time. but even still, it should be possible to do.
Ok-Mix-51293 points1y ago
Starbucks does allow gloves without cuts. Last time I checked and ima. Supervisor. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be allowed to have nails cause it would be nice, just sadly an enforced rule
No_Introduction8689 [OP]2 points1y ago
that’s information i didn’t know, my understanding was that gloves were only to be worn in cases where there could be a bio hazard. now i’m extra confused lmao
Ok-Mix-51291 points1y ago
Yea! You can definitely wear gloves, if only they would allow nails with them smh
[deleted]5 points1y ago

No_Introduction8689 [OP]1 points1y ago
which is fair, but i feel like that should be up to a partners discretion on if they are willing to commit to this.
[deleted]1 points1y ago
[deleted]
No_Introduction8689 [OP]1 points1y ago
okay, that being said, your hand washing should be the same no? it’s no different if you are following that standard. i’m not saying it’s ideal or that it even should be a thing, but if it was it should be up to partner discretion to do so if their state allows it. i’m quite comfortable w my job and i don’t think it’s fair for you to say i should find a different job for wanting my nails to be done.
greys0075 points1y ago
buy impress color press on nails, i have them on right now because i don't work until wednesday so i'm gonna take them off that day and put them back on after work
No_Introduction8689 [OP]3 points1y ago
if i had days off i would totally do this!!
Clueless-Crab4 points1y ago
The few times partners had nails on while I worked with them almost every time I saw paint chips on the bar. Likely in people’s drinks. Also, years ago I worked with a girl who had fake nails, by the end of the night, one was missing. Guess where it was? In the mocha. Starbucks has some lame rules but this is not one of them.
No_Introduction8689 [OP]3 points1y ago
its definitely a possible outcome, but were they wearing gloves? i’m not saying it’s a perfect like “if you’re wearing gloves this won’t happen”, but it could’ve been avoided yanno? regular polish is not a good choice but gel manicures or SNS don’t chip like that so i feel like those should be at least considered. it won’t happen but it’s nice to dream ab.
aShyVixen1 points1y ago
This is the dumbest thing I ever had as If you made it up. My acrylic nails have never chipped in my entire life and I’ve had several.
Clueless-Crab1 points1y ago
Yeah right, not a flake has ever chipped off. Okay lol
Adventurous_Cost_9324 points1y ago
I'm so sorry people are being vicious about this 💀 I've worked in food service for years and this is the only job I've had that told me no nail polish / acrylics, even in actual seated restaurants and in BOH positions. it shouldn't even be that big of a deal, just like watches 💀💀
No_Introduction8689 [OP]3 points1y ago
i agree, things are getting v heated over this. this is also the first job i’ve had that doesn’t allow this sort of thing. my first mistake was assuming this would be a safe place to pose this sort of question.
Adventurous_Cost_9321 points1y ago
it's supposed to be a safe place for this kind of thing but apparently not. it's honestly unfair that acrylics aren't allowed since they don't chip or fall off but it would be a very hard case to make :,)
No_Introduction8689 [OP]2 points1y ago
yeah i thought so:(
oh definitely. there are logistical errors but i feel like this could be something that a multimillion if not multibillion dollar company could solve. not that they would or should but i didn’t expect to be crucified for asking haha
StatisticianDouble352 points1y ago
I made a very similar post and got the same response. Like damn I just want to not have ugly nubby fingers
aninotnahgiel2 points1y ago
People are right, it's a health hazard. You don't have to like it, but it is. You can think hand washing is stupid, too, but it doesn't change the fact that you have to do it. We also aren't allowed to wear rings or watches or other things that could either fall off and end up in someone's food/drink, or get caught on equipment and lead to you injuring yourself. No temporary hair color because it could flake off. I miss having my nails done, too, but no food service job I've ever had has allowed any of these things.
No_Introduction8689 [OP]1 points1y ago
i’ve had plenty of jobs where it was.. that’s my point.
aninotnahgiel1 points1y ago
And they shouldn't have. You asked why, people answered, but you don't like it. It's not just to be controlling, it does serve a real purpose.
No_Introduction8689 [OP]1 points1y ago
i did open for a debate, i recognize that. people are just being vicious so i’m feeling a little defensive lmao.
quickthinxallthots2 points1y ago
acrylics/gel is safe if you are not personally prepping food (ie wait staff or hosting/bussing) but at stbx ur expected to be flexible for the play unless there's a health reason involved. all food service bans nail polish for the most part with or without gloves because it is that much of a health hazard and nobody wants to deal with the controversy if a fake nail happened to fall in someones food/drink. fda says legally yeah if youre wearing gloves its fine but ima be real with you: nobodys going to want to do that. its easier to ban them outright than scold ppl who have them for not wearing gloves. not to mention with gloves youre supposed to change them out regularly since you cant really handwash gloves. its a huge investment all so a few employees can have fake nails so as much as i wanna say fuck big corpo i kinda gotta side with them on this one. its a huge risk. i don't blame them for saying just don't do it.
btw this is speaking as someone who had fake nails before i got a job at stbx. they keep me from biting my nails so im back into the bad habit. so trust me i knooow it sucks but i understand why. i wish there was a way around it lol
SeaWasabi122 points1y ago
If I remember correctly, some US states prohibit nail polish/fake nails regardless if you have gloves or not. My state allows polish if you have gloves, but not long nails like acrylics under gloves (presumably because they’d easily poke through.) So even if sbux changed policy, I probably would’t be able to have acrylics anyway, unless they were super short.
ProfessionalRock79402 points1y ago
Hi, please get a different job
No_Introduction8689 [OP]2 points1y ago
thank you for your opinion.
angelgrl4202 points1y ago
I was just thinking about this and using gloves! I think we should be allowed for gel and acrylics but I know it’s a hard case to make :( I miss being pretty so bad
monochromaticcat1 points1y ago
Honestly I’m gonna say it. We should just be wearing gloves to begin with. Well, bar and warming should be wearing gloves I think. It’s the right thing to do for food prep just to be safe, even if it’s not always completely needed. I used to work at a grocery store deli before working at Starbucks and everyone had to wear TWO pairs of plastic gloves. Very little of the meat was even raw, gloves were just to help put sandwiches together faster and to prevent spread of germs. It was a genuine shock to come to Starbucks and see people handling food without gloves, using only wax paper and crusty ass tongs that have been sitting on a shelf all day. “Waaah but you have to change them often” would u really rather be walking around with sticky hands all day?? Every single time i help with bar during peak I get insanely sticky even if I wash my hands whenever I get a chance. Gloves would probably save us a lot of time since we wouldn’t have to worry about sticky hands or having to throw perfectly good food away because we accidentally barely touched it while putting it into the bag.
Clairey_beari1 points1y ago
I feel you, I also go to a culinary school so I never have the opportunity to have my nails done, which I miss. But it’s not just Starbucks, it’s a food industry and safety must to have clean, plain nails.:)
BusyLeek23511 points1y ago
At my store the females can’t have acrylics or polish but they say nothing to the boys 🙃
emmmeow1 points1y ago
I am right there w/ u. yeah sure it's a universal food service rule, but like EVERYWHERE else I go for food, people have nails done. paint, long acrylics, you name it. I have powder dip on my nails (which isn't going ANYWHERE unless I slam it into a milk pitcher at full force). I wear gloves around shifts that are sticklers or my SM. 🤷♀️
tinydesthique1 points1y ago
you can legit make or buy press on nails to wear when you are outside of working. that’s what I do.
No_Introduction8689 [OP]1 points1y ago
i love this idea, but working 40 hrs a week unfortunately doesn’t leave much time off to do this:(
Karona241 points1y ago
I think acrylics are ok with no painted polish
Aurora_Boreallis3 points1y ago
As acrylics grow out they can Harbor bacteria that’s why they are a no go. They also can fall off. (Barista and cosmetologist here).
Karona24-2 points1y ago
Yea they can fall off but if you maintain them get fill ins etc they want get bacteria, Starbucks only one that I know doesn’t allow & I’m usually a bartender/food, hospitality
Aurora_Boreallis1 points1y ago
Starbucks has the highest standards and follows the rules to a T. As I said I’m a cosmetologist so I have done all the germ theory. As they grow unless you get a fill every other day you can get bacteria. I’m not going to argue I’m just going to present the facts. Get nails when you’re on vacation it’s not hard.
Karona241 points1y ago
Ok I was just giving my opinion

obviously regular polish causes issues but i don’t see why SNS and gel aren’t acceptable given that they are covered by gloves
Frosty-Shelter73721 points1y ago
Nail polish will never be allowed bc it does chip but I think acrylics should be
BlackberryOpposite312 points1y ago
My manager told me when I started that acrylics and gels aren’t allowed because even though most won’t chip, if someone has cheap or poorly done acrylic they could still fall off.
No_Introduction8689 [OP]2 points1y ago
agreed, regular nail polish should not be. but gel and SNS are a different story.
