Shift duties (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sissyyy989
I just started as a shift supervisor. I have no Starbucks experience but 5 years in fast food. I’ve only worked 2 days shadowing my store manager and 1 day on drive through (that I wasn’t trained on and just winged it). I was told that tomorrow I would be running it and he would be shadowing me to see how I’m doing. I feel like I’m not ready but he said he can’t hold my hand forever. But I’ve never worked at Starbucks and don’t know any of the drinks. We skipped barista basics and I’m learning basics plus shift at the same time. I just feel overwhelmed and like I’m going to miss something. I’m good on temps, pull, milk count, and deposits but what should I be helping with in the mean time? I know I need to help with dishes and stocking but since I’m not trained on bar I’m not sure exactly what will need to be stocked besides milks. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it over time but I don’t want to upset the baristas or my store manager if he thinks I should be on top of everything. I guess my question is what can I do to make the shift run smoother? We are a new store too and still have a lot of people training.

Edit: The sm also said I can’t hop on bar or anything anyways while being ssv because I can’t manage and do both. If I was a barista and struggling and my ssv wouldn’t help me I would be upset.

You can't go through shift training before barista basics and barista trainer. You can't coach and support a team if you don't understand the work that they are doing. I would have a talk with your manager about being set up for success in your role.

You're being screwed over. I had a full week of barista training plus a week of barista shifts before I started shift training, and that was another week. I was 3 weeks in before I ran a shift, even supervised/shadowed by someone else. You are not being set up for success.

this isn't a good starbucks. You ABSOLUTELY can and should help your baristas on bar while managing them. If you're standing around the whole time barking orders, you're a bad shift, and you've got bad baristas.
