Closers always get the most crap(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Blueberryfudge
I've been a closer and an opener. Right now luckily I am a mid person working mom hours.
My poor closer was left alone from 3-close on black Friday. My store is located in a store that is very popular on black Friday.
I have never worked in a place that doesnt constantly crap alllll over the closers.
Their expectations are so high and hard especially on a time limit.
How can I show my closer that shes awesome and encourage her?

felt… our morning shift can leave stuff unfinished and unclean (even though they have the most staff), but god forbid i don’t want to stay more than 30 minutes past close.

Yeah I feel like Starbucks is unlike the rest of the restaurant business in that people are generally allowed to leave on time even if it’s a mess and nothing is done (even the fast food places I’ve worked wouldn’t allow this). However, that rule stops being in effect for the people who are closing. While at my current location I’ve never been expected to get absolutely everything done I’ve gotten plenty of notes reminding me about things I “forgot” to do even though I left a note saying I intentionally decided not to do those things because I was prioritizing and trying to get out at a decent time.

I worked at a starbucks before my current one, where I would close and we closed at 7 and would not get out until 11. Literally busting ass. Our pastries and milk were alll the way across the plaza. We were on the highway and we would have 50+ people in a line with myself and a trainee because we couldnt get anyone to stay. I'm not even exaggerating. People on the highway and truck drivers need their caffeine lol. We couldnt do any closing stuff pre close.
I would get yelled at and berated about the floors and pastry pulls. Milk puls. I went to opening and I finished opening and had time to smoke a cigarette. Never got 1 complaint. It's ridiculous.

YES. Grande rant: The thing about morning shift, at least in our store, is that if things don’t get done they still get to leave when their scheduled shift is over. That’s not true for closers, and I wish I could get our morning people to understand that and help us out a little instead of standing around doing nothing when there isn’t a customer right in front of them. At least wipe a counter so I don’t have to clean and reset the *entire* store when I get there.

THIS RIGHT HERE. regardless of what morning/mid does, they get to leave at their scheduled time — but their mess then becomes NIGHT’S responsibility. this is at practically every single store i have ever worked at.

If there's an ongoing issue at your store concerning closes, work it out as a team effort. Approach problems as "how do WE support the closes improving" rather than "how do we convince YOU to fix them." One of my morning SSVs had asked if there was something she could do to support inventory count days since she noticed closes are a bit messier those nights. Instead of making me feel even more overwhelmed and having to increase my efforts, she recognized that I'm doing what I can but need help. I told her, without judgement or blame, all the problems that stop me from being able to do the count and help the baristas on the floor. We worked out how to rebalance tasks and I learned that a quick 30s post-it note to the opening barista about what's left to do made them feel so much better about it.
But yeah. Support a "us vs the taskload" mentality, redirect complaints to more valid problems or helpful avenues, and make sure to recognize the closes for what they are: borderline insane demands fulfilled by the least amount of people possible.

Whenever anyone tries to complain about it being messy in the morning, I choose to remind them that night shift has barely any people and a TON of stuff to do. Never diss night shift in front of me lol (-an opener)

This was a big part of the reason that I quit. I was permanently a closer in a store whose mentality seemed to be “if I leave a problem before I clock out the closers will take care of it”. We had major staffing issues with no manager and none of us fully trained so there was even a point that after I finished my closing duties, I would have to leave instructions set out throughout the kiosk to explain how to open to the newly hired barista who was supposed to somehow open on her own. Sbux is a joke

Literally this though! Like how do they expect stores to sustain this kind of crap? I was a closer before I quit as well. Me and the other closing shift both left so ngl the morning crew always acted so elitist that I really hope they're struggling right now

I’m strictly an opener because closing was too much for me. It’s a lot. Although people at my store have been so burnt out we’re all a mess right now.

I was the main closing shift for my store for months. We close at 10. We’re scheduled until 10:30. We were lucky to get out by 10:45. Because if we didn’t have everything ready for openers they would throw a fit. New guy just transferred from another store. I’m mid shift now. Dude left at 10:30, I got a text from my baristas… opening Supervisor is gonna be pissed. Not even the dishes were done. He blamed it on the barista who was doing the dishes. Nothing was put out for morning shift. I totally forewarned one of the morning SSV. But like the one in really worried about is the morning shift who literally complains about anything we don’t do. I can’t wait lol
