SSV not allowed to cover for Baristas (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by AffectionateThroat64
At my store baristas are constantly needing their shifts covered due to our manager’s disregard for availability requests. I’m an SSV and have been told multiple times that I am not allowed to cover for baristas. Mind you, I’m only getting 10-15hrs a week when I was hired on with the expectation of getting 30-40hrs. Is this a rule across the board or another case of my SM trying to make our numbers look good to our DM 🙃

definitely the latter, actually idek. i’m sure your SM is trying to make labor look good for your DM but i doubt your DM is aware of this. reach out to them or PCC.

Thank you! I’m definitely going to talk to my DM about this!

So there is something called a "shift compliment" and this number some DM's look at. It's all the keyholder hours combined - theres a way to compute it based off store hours. Your SM is probably trying to keep this number low. Some DM's are hyper focused on it, while others are not. I would just ask about hours.

Classic case of your manager trying to be an absolute kiss ass.

Hmm that's weird! My store doesn't allow baristas to take supervisor shifts but not the other way around

I mean baristas aren’t qualified to take shift shifts since they aren’t key holder but there should be no issue going the other way
rudebii 10 points 1y ago
ideally, you'd want fewer key holders working barista shifts. it's more expensive, and decreases the number of key holder hours available on the schedule. Ofc, this goes out the window when there are gaps that can only be key holder, ideally.

but yes, you can't have a barista take a supervisor shift because they aren't key holders, but the inverse doesn't have that problem.

As far as I know, it's "discouraged." Because SSVs make more, so they don't want to spend extra money to pay you for a barista shift. But if it comes down to it, and someone cannot find any barista to cover, yeah an SSV should definitely be encouraged to step in. To support their team who would be down a person, as well as support their partner who cannot make it to their shift.

The thing about your manager's disregard for availability requests... makes me livid just to read, based on moral standards as well as personal experience. It doesn't always do much, but you could try to contact the PCC or your DM about that. If you request off or change your availability 21 days(?) in advance, it should be accommodated. If it's not approved, I would straight up ask my manager why.

That’s actually kind of serious, those hours you’re scheduled. I’m not sure if this varies by state, but in mine, I believe a shift must work a MINIMUM 20 hours per week. I’d definitely call PCC and ask about that 🤔

That's just plain stupid. In a time of staffing issues and uncertainty, screw shift compliment. If you're willing to work, the increase in sales from being staffed will more than make up for the increase in shift comp.

This. I'm a shift, but only shift for about half of my total hours. But it's with the understanding that I'm strong as a barista and can support the store as a whole/still do shifty things. Our store thrives when we have more than one shift on the clock. Honestly we usually have 2 SSVs working until 4pm most days.

Not to mention what a great opportunity for SSVs to learn from each other!!!

Yes! I love being there to help my less seasoned SSVs problem solve!

Kinda both? Some districts are super strict about shift labor hours

Damn, my store often has 4-5 shifts working at the same time. We've been unable to staff up with baristas so the shifts are covering most barista shifts
