What are your thoughts on inconsistent dress code? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by FWshift
I’ve worked for Starbucks for almost a year. I’m a shift at a very busy store. My previous SM was a male, and didn’t care what you wore. I had shirts for pride month. I bought a green shirt that said “pumpkin spice, and reproductive rights” My child works at another Starbucks their SM is pretty much the same way. Express yourself. My new SM. Omg she drives me nuts. I’m SSV and she wants me to send people home if they aren’t in dress code. Ma’am we can barely get people to come to work, I’m not sending anyone home. I’m frustrated because I feel like, at this point as long as they are in safe and non offensive clothing. The customer doesn’t care what color my shirt is or what it says underneath my apron. I think I would mind it less, if they were consistent across the board. I love my partners and my job. But it’s hard to keep morale up when people are knit picking.

I think there clothes matter a little less than stuff like hair. So many of the partners at my store are wearing their hair in very loose pony tails and I find their hairs all over the place when I clean. I wish my ssvs would be more strict about hair but clothes I could care less about

I absolutely agree with this. I understand managers have to follow the rules and do what they're supposed to- which technically, yes, is sending people home for being out of dress code. BUT damn, prioritize the issues here. If your store is perfect and you're not understaffed and dress code is really the top concern... then okay. But otherwise, that's dumb.

Honestly, I'd love for any manager to discuss this with me if they disagree. Pick your freaking battles. Keep your store running. Is it worth it to stress everyone else out, make customers upset, increase wait times, cause things to not get done.... because you're wearing maroon instead of navy?

That being said, it does depend on the manager. If dress code were strictly enforced across the board, yeah, we wouldn't be able to wear even the graphic tees Starbucks gives us or the ones we can buy on coffeegear.

I've had managers that always point out when something is off (nose hoop, tongue piercing in, more than two earrings, name tag on the wrong side, name tag in the wrong color) but she never sent me home. Actually, I now know the dress code better than any other barista or manager I've ever worked with.

The RM forbade us from wearing regular t-shirts unless they were ones that Starbucks gave us. Had to be a polo, wouldn’t look professional enough if it was a t-shirt.

I really wanted him to try working a rush wearing a polo and sweating his butt off. Put him on warming, see how he feels about t-shirts after.

Also, love “Pumpkin spice and reproductive rights” on a shirt! I want one now.

Your new manager is a true moron who is missing the forest for the trees. She can feel free to send whoever she wants home if she wants to work 60 hours a week. No? Didn’t think so. They never do.

Best of luck to her with regards to the labor shortage. Lmao. I would be running for the hills if I were you; managers with that attitude in THIS day and age are so unreasonable.

Actually I just put in an application at the other stores in the area to transfer. I’m so done with her.

I quit a while back but I’ll never forget the time our DM was at our store and my SSV mentioned to me that I wasn’t in dress code cus I had flowers on my shirt, but she was wearing lululemon sweatpants. She said “they’re joggers” like bitch what lol

probably more the DM in the region than the GM of the store, at least I hope. any manager who actually cares about dress code, I literally would just transfer

as a shift, the only part of dress code i really care about is safety. hair needs to be up (not safe if it gets in food), i don’t care how short it is, if it fits in a pony it’s going in a pony. shoes need to be leather, pleather, croc material, etc w no holes (don’t want to burn your feet). not running shoes. shirts need to be appropriate length and for obvious reasons need to be modest (i don’t wanna see your bra through your shirt, thank you very much.)

I feel you. The only one you didn’t mention that I’m serious about is nails. Don’t come with fake nails. I’m not about to be the SSV that gets a complaint because somebodies Nail ended up in their drink lol

oh no one has even tried that here lmao thank god. not even polish 🥵

i started a month ago, have always been in uniform, and am a good worker. my mom got me a nametag (its black with white writing, but it is a tad bigger than the normal nameplate and the writing is raised). i've worn it for almost 2 weeks now. today, my SM throws a regular nameplate at me and said my nametag isnt in dresscode. i mean idc, but i asked a SSV when i got it and they said it was ok. i guess my SM just noticed this morning 🤷‍♀️

It’s only against Dress Code if the manager brings it up or the DM, god forbid you bring it up because if you do, chances are they will snicker at you and mumble some shit under their breath.

Third Place my fucking ass, that’s where the third place is.

I think your missing the point. It’s the inconsistency that I have an issue with. The dress code itself isn’t the issue. It’s that with the understaffing we’ve all been going through. It shouldn’t be a priority. If someone has a green shirt on that doesn’t have anything vulgar on it why would I send one of the few workers I have home. If Starbucks truly is the “third place” And they want their partners to express themselves. Then knit picking at this point during a Panda Express is not showing true partnership with their workers.
