Clocking out for 30 (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Seaweedgreedy
So sometimes when I forget to clock out and back in for my 30 I will just log in and start my lunch and set a 30 minute timer while I’m working and then clock out when it goes off so that I don’t have to write it in the book. Is this stupid like could I get in serious trouble for this? How would they even find out?

Serious trouble? I doubt it. But honestly you're better off just logging the missed punches in the book. When your SM does payroll, they might ask why there's a discrepency in the DCR for when you were supposed to take your lunch versus the actual punches.

Though I don't see it being too big a deal since breaks and lunches get shuffled sometimes, anyway.

Only red flag I can think of is if someone else was on lunch at the same time but you only had coverage for one lunch running.

I've never ran my lunch "on time", the DCR likes to say we all take a lunch at the same time. Haven't gotten in trouble yet, so I don't think I'll push my luck and see if a store-wide closure is okay 🤣

this is the can of worms my brain didn’t know it needed

Or if you meal break it could be a problem. You could unknowingly be receiving a meal reward and that will come back on your shift supervisors not managing partner breaks in an appropriate manner

What’s a meal break/reward? How would I know if I have one?

I’m in California, but I think it’s standard for Starbucks across the company…if you work past 5 hours without clocking out for lunch, you receive 1 hour of time and a half for not receiving your lunch in an appropriate amount of time. So for example, I open most days at 5am, if I clock out for my lunch at 10am or 10:01 I get rewarded a meal break reward, but if I clock out at 9:59 I’m ok. But that technically adds labor to that days overall coverage hours, so in turn, the shift on will get talked to about managing barista breaks

it’s a california law & it’s called the meal and rest break law or something like that. 4:59 hours without a full 30 minute unpaid break is fine but 5 hours or more without a full lunch and the company automatically pays you for an extra hour + time and a half for anything worked after 5 hours before your lunch. this is required by law for all employers in california, unless an employee voluntarily agrees to work 5-6 hours without a lunch (and then they’d have to sign a form & give it to HR. starbs doesn’t do this)

Ohhhh okay thank u for letting me know. I will stop doing this lol.

Like I said it can be different in your state, but for California I know it’s 5 hours and the shifts get talked to about it. I just checked my paystubs (I meal broke a few times this last month due to understaffed) and it looks like my normal hourly pay with like an extra dollar apparently.
