Do it.

Nobody should be fired for pointing out they were left stranded by a manger.

$1 member here; and we get to see a lot of shite unions...

Having *"a voice"* and *"a contract"* are not enough- be ye forewarned -there are a lot of shite unions out there that want nothing better to get their names in the news...

be wary of the old legacy unions that have been stripped of their pensions, and healthcare plans... *(-coughs- United Steel Workers -coughs-)*

If your union cannot provide job placement, then that should be a big ass red flag for you, and you need to run away friends...

A Union should have at least ***"The Big Three"*** that being:

**Job Placement-** the ability to put you to work no matter what happens with the current employer; let's say you get fired, or laid off, or whatever... does your union have the ability to put you back to work the next day somewhere else...? or are you just shit out of luck...? Job Placement and Job Security *through the union* is key... don't pay one red cent unless your union can do this *(period)*

**A Pension/Retirement Plan-** not from your current employer, but via the union; not some crummy 401k from your current employer; but an actual retirement plan- so you work for X amount of years and draw your pension... with $1 it's 20 years, after 20 years I can draw my check- I can also go back to work the next day, work for another 20 years, and draw *another* check... No retirement- No deal

**Healthcare Plan-** not from your current employer, but via the union; not some crummy insurance group with a majillion dollar deductible from your current employer; but an actual healthcare plan- like $1 for civilians; the real shit, most y'all think BCBS or Aflac, is the shit... nah, hell nah ... and guess what, my Healthcare is transportable, so it don't matter if I quit, get laid off, or fired- I just take that shit with me...

Be ye warned
-

there a lot of shite unions that would love to get their claws into you, and I get it, but be sure to shop around...

my buddy worked as an assistant manager at a grocery store for 18 years... unheard of, right...? and even after the grocery chain went bankrupt after being bought and sold 3 different times he kept his job, the union gave him his retirement early, and he ***still*** has his healthcare plan even though he hasn't worked in 10 years... now... that's a real union...

do not settle for these legacy unions that don't give you shit else but a voice and a contract; and don't let them tell you that *"this is the first step"* I've been fucking *everywhere* friends as an electrician, we get to go places nobody else gets to go, and I'm telling you there are some real shite unions, and some real good unions...

what $1, and a lot of others understood a long time ago, is that we have the power, and we really hold all the cards... these other unions don't understand this...

stay frosty friends

Let me go ahead and close the circle (or should I say, circuit?). I'm a Starbucks barista and I actually got interested in trade work, looking to see if I could get a job that's a bit more reliable and future proof.

I noticed the motion that other Starbucks are trying to unionize, with great difficulty. Thats how I found out about IBEW and everything just seems to be falling into place that way.

So yeah, it's starting to look like I'll become an electrician and join a union!
