A lot of it has to do with the ability to for workers to collectively bargain for better wages. The only raises my job receives are from union negotiations. I posted elsewhere illustrating the average hourly wages in real dollars are actually less in 2013 than in 1974.

There is also plenty of studies that support unions reducing income inequality.
