Calling Off & a Toxic ASM: the rant of all rants (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SpAcEcAt_94
Soooo title says it all.

Woke up this morning for my morning shift. Everything was going fine until I suddenly felt funny. To keep it PG, I spent some *extended* time in the bathroom. Chugged some pepto hoping it would do the trick.

It did not.

Ended up calling off 20 minutes before my shift started (the timing is on me & I acknowledge I should have called off earlier than that). Here's the issue. I call and one of my shifts (we will call him "J") picks up. I explain what's going on and how idk what to do. J says to hold on a second and then the line goes silent for a minute.

Then T (my highly toxic ASM) gets on the phone and is like "we *need* you SpAcEcAt_94, we're out of G/V hot lids and are having machine issues". I'm just thinking 'how - how can I help with that? I'm not a machine whisperer nor can I magically bring lids out of nowhere?'

But, out loud, I'm like "uhhhh... but I'm having to run to the bathroom every 5-10 minutes and you'll end up just sending me home within an hour?" She just huffs at me and suddenly the line goes silent. I'm like "hello?" And then J is back on the line and says "hello?" And I'm like "hi". And he's like "oh!... I don't know what just happened... just do what you can for us, call people and post it in the group chat?" I thank him and we disconnect.

Did my ASM literally hang up on me or something?! Or did she throw the phone at my shift to make him deal with me? Obviously that's the first issue.

The next one is T (said toxic ASM) LITERALLY LAST WEEK (side note: T is gluten-free so she can't consume a lot of things without getting sick), looked at the special espresso whipped cream that one of the baristas made, ate some while saying "I'm going to regret this", and then 15 minutes later she's clocking out and is like "I knew I was going to regret that" WHILE LAUGHING. She left 4 baristas on the floor DURING PEAK cuz we also had two call offs in addition to her leaving within an hour of her shift starting. And prior to her eating the whipped cream? She was bad mouthing the baristas who called off and saying how they "screwed us over", etc.

So I know the split second the call ended from me calling off she was bad mouthing me to the other baristas. I would have gone in an hour later cuz I started feeling better stomach-wise but then the anxiety of facing her made me back-pedal.

Needless to say, I'm still trying to find a better job. At this point, anywhere is better than my store. I even applied to a Target with a Tarbucks cuz I enjoy making drinks (when I'm allowed to make them for longer than 10 minutes for an 8 hr shift). I just can't with the toxicity anymore.

Thank you for getting through my rant. I love all of you.

TDLR: toxic ASM is basically causing anxiety attacks with calling off due to her bad mouthing people

Drop the store # I’m gonna come give her a reason to clock out early

Ope. 😅

I'm writing a practical book as part of my resignation letter, detailing stuff that the ASM has done/said. I'm at about 3 pages now. A bit over the top? Yeah. Necessary? Also yes.

you need a road trip buddy? im On my way!

Document it, get some witnesses if you can, make sure they document too with times and dates, locations (bonus points if it's within sight of a camera), then bring it up with your DM. If they can't be bothered, hit up corporate HR too while you're at it. I will say they probably won't be bothered unless it's a clear case of liability or something potentially illegal.

That's the thing. Most won't say anything against her. She selects those that she is cruel against.

I just so happen to be one of those individuals that she has selected.

One barista has already left due to feeling targeted (she was my old DTO partner if you go back through my posts). She left about 3 weeks ago. I'm following suit the second I get a new job.

I have a bit of a notebook going through. It's all going into my resignation letter... which I'm pretty sure has to be kept on file?

Additional/edit: said resignation letter is now about 3 pages.

So I’m gluten free as well (celiac disease) and as long as the whip had just the usual ingredients plus espresso it’s gluten free and your ASM was just full of shit.
SpAcEcAt_94 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
... are you serious? Wow.

Granted she may also have something else like being lactose intolerant or something (I try not to be nosy) but as far as I know it's just her being gluten-free.

So you're saying that she shouldn't have had a "reaction" to it if that's all it was? I'm not sure what all was in the whipped cream... might have had another syrup in there.

Regardless of what was in it though, she literally was like "I'm gonna regret this!" And then literally like 15-30 minutes later (it's been a week so I'm not precise on timing), I look up and she's carrying her stuff from the back and laughing as she clocks out and leaves. She literally did it to herself... but then chastises me for calling in sick ONE TIME.

Literally today was the first time in 6 months of working at Starbucks that I have called off.

Yeah none of the syrups have gluten in them and HC and espresso are both gluten free. Even so with a gluten allergy it can take hours for it to take affect because the reaction takes place in the small intestine. She was probably just looking for an excuse to get out of there. And trust me she would not be laughing to clock out she would be screaming to the bathroom

Good to know...

She literally was cracking jokes on how miserable she felt as she left.

This makes me irritated but good to know.

I can't think of anything else she has complained about having that would do that. Tbh I only know of the gluten-free thing.

You should call partner resources and open an anonymous case on that ASM. Their behavior is not demonstrating mission and values by any means.

Yeah I've been thinking about it. But I want something else lined up just in case of retribution (I know it's not legally gonna happen but everyone is gonna know it's me and I'd rather not deal with the behavior from everyone else).

Her behavior actually drove a 2 year partner (my DTO buddy) to quit due to the toxicity that was being thrown at said DTO partner. I guess (I wasn't present for this) something happened on the floor between the two of them and the ASM refused to work with her and any time they saw each other, the amount of tension in the room... let's just say it was a ton.

Again, I didn't see that thing go down but according to the grapevine there was some words and a bunch of yelling at each other about drive thru times, unfair expectations, stress, general toxicity, etc etc. Well, about a month later and the barista quits (gave a verbal two week notice to the SM). But after she left everyone was mocking her for quitting due to the toxicity (no one else has any toxicity directed towards them).

The main issue is this ASM literally targets people and goes after them. Tbh that's probably why I never bar. I've gotten maybe 15 total hours on bar in the past 5 months... and most of it has been making my own drinks. I've complained, I've begged, I've tried to make deals for bringing food in. But I already know that as soon as specific people see me on bar... I'm gonna get pulled off of it so then our two "15 year partners can have their time on bar" (not a typo, literally two of our baristas have been with Starbucks for 15 years).
