is there any sm or asm or anyone that knows anything about starbucks specific minor rules? i’m 17 and have been with starbucks for over a year. i got a new manager 2-3 months after i was hired and she only ever schedules me 4 hours on weekdays when my old manager would schedule me any amount of hours any day. we’ve talked about it multiple times and ive asked her if she could explain what the rule is and if there’s a way to get an exemption. she always just pushes me away saying it’s a starbucks rule but never elaborates. i’ve looked partner hub up and down looking for any information on any minor specific rules and can’t find anything. in my state(NC)the ONLY rule is you can’t work past 11 when there’s school the next day.

She doesn’t want to give you long shifts so she doesn’t have to worry about putting you on a break. Happens a lot with the minors.

but not even a 5.50 hour? i wouldn’t have a problem with a 5.75 but for her to always do 4 hours and say it’s a rule when there possibly may not even be such a thing?

Idk which state you’re in but in WA after 5 hours you legally need a break and if you accidentally go over the 5 hours even by a second it’s like a 10,000$ penalty.

In Florida the law is 4 hours and a minor needs a 30 minute break. So sometimes the minors here only get scheduled for 3.75 hour shifts

Yeah recently I’ve been having less than 4 hour shifts for weekends when I used to get average of 6.50 hr shifts. Not fair when saving for college😐

Not sure about other states but in CA we can only schedule minors 4 hour shifts Mon - Fri between the hours of 3pm - 10pm. On the weekends they can work 8 hour shifts between the hours of 7am - 10pm.

if you’re in CA that’s a CA state law that minors can only work so many hours on a school day and can’t stay past a certain time on a school night

Honestly I'm in the reverse situation? My old manager said the same thing and would only give me 4 hour shifts on weekdays. Now, my new manager gives me 6+ hour shifts on weekdays (and I def like that better, I hate short shifts they feel pointless lol). So honestly, I think it's your manager being cheap with hours? Does anyone else in your store get alot of hours? Some managers will do everything they can, like lie about how many hours a minor could work on a weekday for example, just to save on labor.

well we’re currently closing early everyday due to low staffing(today closing at 3:30pm) and i have my availability open for me to work any day any time after school but he’s scheduled me 2 weeks in a row for only 2 days(10-13 hours) when we are closing at 6. our regular closing time is 9:30. plus it’s christmas and i need the money.

Hey, so according to prsc, Starbucks follows the rules of the most strict state they are in. So in California minors can only be scheduled 4 hours on weekdays and 8 on weekends for a total of 28 max hours per week (the 28 max is in a lot of states I believe) while they are attending school.
The scheduling system knows the school calendar and doesn't allow your manager to schedule you differently. HOWEVER there is a button that basically tells the system you're out of school and then they can schedule you however they like, but it's against policy. A lot of SMs do it anyway, but it is against policy.
I hope that helps answer your question.

Without knowing what state you're in we can't answer that for you.
