Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Full History - 2021 - 12 - 05 - ID#r9pcq2

We have limited hours right now because we're short staffed (7-2). I usually get off right at 2:00. Am I a bad person if I enjoy sitting in my car for a couple minutes and just watch people try to get into the locked store? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Lol idk, it's the little things.

No lmfao it’s cathartic. I love watching them get mad when the drive they voice says we’re closed.
fakeportuguese 75 points 1y ago
It's the best. Used to work at a paint retailer and our hours were 10-2 on Sundays, it was so great seeing people try to pry our sliding doors open before 10am and after 2pm. Like dude the lights are off. What really put the icing on the cake was our store was in a very affluent, "old money" demographic type area so seeing these entitled 1%ers throw a fit was what kept me going at that job...

Gold star for creating your own third place 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Really tho

I love after close when people come through drive and still try and order but we get to ignore them. amazing. aaaamazing.

or- on snow days, in a usually warm area, when people drive up to a totally dark store surprised that hours are going to be different. I got to watch baffled people pull away waiting for a manager to open the store.

So yes, I'd do the same thing. I'd bring snacks.
mjitterbug [OP] 27 points 1y ago
Yeah I usually make a drink at the end of my shift so I just sit there and enjoy a few sips before I start driving.
DannyDTR 14 points 1y ago
Fucking of course NOT! Nothing better than closing and being able to ignore the dinging and laughing in the headset or acting like I can’t see someone when they come up to the window and they honk and I turn and mime the “sorry, we’re closed” and shrug. What are they gunna do call the store? We’re not answering the phone, we’re closed. All they can do is leave and come back tomorrow.

Edit: typo
interyx 5 points 1y ago
That happened here once except the lady pulled up to the window, with all the lights off, and saw someone prepping teas... so she laid on her horn for *five minutes* trying to make them turn around.

Finally they open the window (which I probably wouldn't have done because it's against policy) and said "we're not open yet" and she went "oh, ok" and drove off.

I just can't understand how their brain works.
DannyDTR 2 points 1y ago
It’s times like that that I wish we could have blinds up so they can’t see us inside

Or that there was a clock on the front door and DT window so they can see but then again people are stupid and they will probably still bang on the door anyway
mexicanitch 20 points 1y ago
LOL, beautiful. Just beautiful.
sholbyy 17 points 1y ago
No. I used to leave my headset on after closing just so I could listen to people pull up to the speaker box and yell into it like idiots, asking if we were still open. It brought me joy.
DannyDTR 10 points 1y ago
The best part about closing at a drive-thru store.
canidieyet_ 17 points 1y ago
if that makes you a bad person, then that mean i am too bc i do the exact same thing. it’s the best medicine after a bad shift
WingsofFlight 12 points 1y ago
Me every Sunday morning before we open at 9am. We open at 6am during the week and people think we do Sunday too.
DannyDTR 8 points 1y ago
Oh I’m jealous. We opened at 5 am during the week and 6 on the weekends. It would have been great to open at 9am. Especially since I clopened on the weekends.
WingsofFlight 7 points 1y ago
Ouch, that must suck. Especially Clopens they are the worst. We only open that late on Sunday due to UK law, so yes we are very lucky.

5am? I would cry. I have enough trouble getting up at 4 haha.
DannyDTR 5 points 1y ago
Yeah I’m a night owl so it really sucked. But now I work from home and start between 8-10 so it’s great.

No this is the #1 best thing about being a closer

Thanksgiving week, the store I worked at was only open 5:30 to 12. One day my boyfriend and his mom were waiting for me to get off so we could go to lunch, and they sat there and counted how many people stopped, read the sign, and still jiggled the door. Not to mention, the same day a women tried to open the front door, then the side door, and then walked into our drive through and knocked on our window saying she had a mobile order. We hadn't had mobile orders on that entire week...
DannyDTR 8 points 1y ago
Wow. That’s super weird and strange yet fucking hilarious.
Darius_Acosta 10 points 1y ago
Thats the best part of closing.

In time like these take solace where you find it.

Lol nope. If I was your coworker, I'd pop some popcorn and park right next to you.

Happiness, like energy, is a commodity that can neither be created nor destroyed, only transferred from one form to another. When people can't order at your store they transfer their happiness to you.
killerweeee 5 points 1y ago
I love you.
deluxe_anxiety 6 points 1y ago
No! Doing things like this is the spice of life! I don’t work at Starbucks anymore but at my bar we sit in the back at 3 am and watch people on the cameras look into the clearly closed bar.
brokenleftjoycon 6 points 1y ago
My store closes early and I love ignoring people trying to get in. We’ve been closing early for months and people are still surprised. I don’t get how people look up our phone number to ask hours but don’t just look at our listed hours online.
pickled_goblin 5 points 1y ago
we’re open 8-2 right now. to be honest, the most scrumptious feeling in the world is when I’m counting down the drawer and someone yanks on the locked door and I get to look up and smile and wave at them.
it’s just *chefs kiss* delicious.
TrueFondue 4 points 1y ago
lmao i thought i was wrong for stuff like this too. i like it when we close early cause then some people come and try and get in, then they also make the effort to call the store. though some people i wouldn’t mind serving too
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee 4 points 1y ago
😂👍
Silent-Apple3669 3 points 1y ago
There’s a recorded voice for y’all when you close? We have cars sit there until I wait 30 sec and tell ‘em ‘we closed bro’.
purseEffphony 3 points 1y ago
Im waiting for the day someone walks smack into the door. Most of our customers are great its just that 1% who act like an $8 coffee beverage entitles them to be obnoxious to the people making and serving it.
Elliotisnotokay 3 points 1y ago
No I loved when I worked at the drive thru and the voice would come on saying we were closed. Id leave my headset on while doing closing stuff just to hear peoples reactions
mysteriousjuror 3 points 1y ago
My store is in a mall, and people still walk through even thought the mall and my store has closed. When we’re closing, we have no barriers so customers can still come up to us. I love telling them that we’re closed and no to ice waters or anything else. They fight with us and I do not ease up. WE ARE CLOSED.
lilisredditaccount 3 points 1y ago
Love this for you
brattiebun 3 points 1y ago
When I would close more I did this often, it’s hilarious watching people stomp off angrily. My favorite was the time a woman was banging on our cafe window because she wanted espresso beans…we’re a 3 minute walk from a Safeway
BeardiesRule112 3 points 1y ago
It’s one of the only joys we get at work lol
inserttitlecard 3 points 1y ago
no it’s hilarious lmao when we close early we all watch from the inside and laugh
GuySmileyIncognito 2 points 1y ago
Not at all, may I even recommend sitting in the cafe instead of your car so you can get a better look at their faces. Nothing beats the joy of watching someone knock on the locked door or walk around to try to see if the other door is open. My last shift after working at the bux for 15+ years was a week ago and watching people not be able to get is literally the only thing I miss.
SuggestionShot1312 2 points 1y ago
lol my store is open from 6-12 for the same reasons & while we’re closing the store i love watching people trying to come in & getting pissed off when they finally realize that we’re closed
samofthedisc 2 points 1y ago
We're experiencing snow storms here and after being empty for almost an hour, our manager said we could close early (around 6pm when we usually close at 7). We turn off the lights and after 20 minutes of cleaning, a group of grumpy middle aged women tried to come in and I got to tell them we closed early. Luckily they were decent about it, but I love telling people we're closed!

oh good im so glad to hear this because i’ve accidentally done this a couple times and have felt really embarrassed . Glad you could enjoy. Starbucks has always been important to our family we have always moved a lot and have felt that starbucks was a place where you felt a sense of community and the baristas would learn our names also we would be able to tip. Sadly this has all eroded in the last two years….. I rarely go anymore the last time i went i was comforting the single employee that was scheduled alone all day…… starbucks has been driven into the ground it underpays its employees they are overworked. It’s done and i’m so down about it.
