Insurance (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by fruitsallllad
So I recently found out that I could not apply for Access because they could not prove my identity. I cannot apply for insurance through my parents because it is way too expensive and out of my budget. I am trying to apply for medical insurance through Starbucks but it has to be a life changing event. One of the options is “partner lose eligibility for other insurance”. Would that apply? It has been in the last 45 days. I really need insurance because I have not been to a doctor in awhile and it seems to be catching up to me. I just don’t want to do this under the wrong terms because I do not want to lose my job there.

So first you need to make sure you're even eligible. Are you a brand new hire?

A QLE, or Qualifying Life Event, is a handful of different things that will make you eligible to change/enroll in insurance. QLEs are stuff like marriage/divorce, birth/loss of a child, sudden loss of previous coverage (if you're covered by a parent/partner who loses their coverage), and IIRC moving house. All insurance companies and plans use QLEs, so it's a good thing to be familiar with!

You typically need to report this QLE and enroll pretty quickly, so you'll probably want to speak with a benefits advisor if it's been over 30 days since the loss of insurance. The contact number can be found on mysbuxben.

Also, some reassurance - you cannot lose your job over health insurance enrollment issues :P you don't have to worry about that. Worst case scenario you'll have to wait until August for open enrollment!

No im not a new hire. I actually did apply for insurance in August but something happened and I am not covered. I already called and they said that there was nothing that they can do to fix my insurance being gone. (Saying i never applied in the first place and what not) I tried to apply for Access and my household makes too much money and they cannot prove my identity. I was kicked off my parents insurance because they could not pay for it but that was longer than 45 days ago. I just needed to know if being ineligible for other health insurances suddenly would apply to that bracket.

Yeah at this point you would not be eligible for Starbucks insurance until open enrollment again in August. There are no QLEs that would qualify you at this point.

If you absolutely *need* to see a doctor, you can try an urgent care or a walk-in clinic. There may be a free clinic close to you that you can go to, I would recommend using $1 to see what shows up near your zip.

Regarding identity stuff, typically the stuff they look for is like a state ID/Drivers License, passport, social security card, birth certificate, etc. so you should have that on hand for stuff like this. I'm going to assume you are pretty young (somewhere between 18-23, am I right?) so if you can, try to get ahold of that stuff *now* so you'll have it for the future.

You should also try Medicaid, and if you are under 18 I think your parents can even look into CHIP. Are your parents not able to walk you through some of this stuff?

Im 19 and I live in a small town. I will look at the website i really appreciate that! I have gone to a walk in clinic but it is rather irritating for what I have to pay and they normally don’t diagnose me very well. I do have all of that stuff but it’s not asking me for it I just don’t have a certain ID and my parents don’t want to help me. I will look into Medicaid! My parents work all the time and don’t really have any time to help me. My household motto is basically “fend for yourself”. I cook my own dinner and I pay for my own stuff, which is why I do not really want to pay for the walk-in clinic. I have asked both of my parents but they don’t really know or want to help me, as they see it is my fault that I didn’t sign up correctly for insurance.

I feel you with clinics, it took me two or three of them before I found a decent one near me. Most Starbucks baristas should be eligible for SNAP/EBT benefits, which typically means you might be eligible for Medicaid, so it's definitely worth a shot!

Other than Medicaid, I'm not sure what options would be available for you for insurance. You might just have to wait. In the meantime, just try to take care of yourself and do whatever you can! And of course if you need more help, feel free to reach out either to me directly or, of course, to the subreddit :)

and don't be afraid to reach out across Reddit in general! There are so many super awesome communities out there, especially communities like /r/InternetParents for the kind of advice and info you may not have gotten from your parents. Good luck!!
