birthday time off denied (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vanney223
I’m so sad my request for time off on my birthday was denied and I can’t find coverage :(
adventurelyfe 248 points 1y ago
Damn. Sucks you’ll be sick this year on your birthday!

I love how this is a recurring comment on posts like this.

I would call out. I never work on my birthday.
vanney223 [OP] 30 points 1y ago
wouldn’t it be suspicious if i call out when i requested the day off
777BABYDOLL777 70 points 1y ago
Yeah maybe, but fuck them for denying you when you had the decency to request off in the first place. Just say you went out of town.
Chemical-Less 39 points 1y ago
It would be but honestly if they expect anything else thwyre outta their minds. Just tell them youre sick and if they give you shit for it be like "i know right? So unhappy to be sick on my bday :(((( bye!" Fuck em :( you deserve your bday off!!
bobbysangtheblues 38 points 1y ago
Don’t go! The fuck are they gonna do? Stop treating it as a request off and start treating it as a notice that you’ll be off. It is their fault that your store isn’t adequately staffed to cover one employee missing a shift.

Enjoy your birthday friend :-))))
RinnTheOtter 2 points 1y ago
More people need to see this comment, if you put in for time off, and you aren’t making salary, it’s a notice, not a request.
GuySmileyIncognito 6 points 1y ago
If they aren't staffed enough to accept a request of a non holiday off a month in advanced, they definitely aren't staffed enough to do anything about a person who comes down with a freak sickness that day.
bobbysangtheblues 1 points 1y ago
EXACTLY like how is that sustainable
RinnTheOtter 3 points 1y ago
Yes, but your manager shouldn’t have denied the day off. You have the right to call out for a number of reasons, mental health as well as physical. And if your birthday is a day you don’t normally work, that’s important to your work like balance, and by extension your mental health, ergo, take a personal day.
Soensou 2 points 1y ago
Quit thinking of it like a request. It is a heads up. You aren't coming in and gave them a chance to schedule someone else. They fucked up by not doing that. Your manager lacks foresight is all.
lexaproloser 47 points 1y ago
lol i’d say it wasn’t a request it was a notice. enjoy ur bday :)
Frosty-Shelter7372 16 points 1y ago
Jan 3rd is a not a national holiday, there’s no reason to deny that request! Make sure you don’t call out with a covid symptom. I made that mistake and had to miss work for 3 days!
Gameb0i6 -4 points 1y ago
I recently had to isolate too for 3 days. It’s was t that bad. But that’s what sick hours are for.
Frosty-Shelter7372 1 points 1y ago
Well OP isn’t actually sick. They just need a call out excuse for their bday. Missing 3 days of work instead of 1 is unnecessary
LatteMaster 12 points 1y ago
How long in advance did you request it off?
vanney223 [OP] 15 points 1y ago
i’ve requested a month in advance
rukittenmerightmeow- 12 points 1y ago
Wtf why was it denied? Is it a holiday?
vanney223 [OP] 7 points 1y ago
jan 3rd :(
anon91301 5 points 1y ago
damn too bad you’re planning on spraining ur ankle that day :(((
smaidit 4 points 1y ago
me and my best friends who are also partners requested 3 days off for my birthday 2 months in advance. (it was 3 of us and we were overstaffed also none of us were shifts). the both of them got denied and I got accepted. One was able to find coverage, the other wasn’t able to find coverage just for one day, so they called out 2 days before. when we all came back and that one partner that called out worked next, he was put on his final warning without any previous write ups. it was insane. he was able to fight it and get it removed but I eventually left the company and this was one of my reasons.
rudebii 4 points 1y ago
The siren doesn’t give a fuck about your humanity, so your birthday doesn’t matter. I worked all mine while I wore a green apron because coverage.

Did I ever get a present? If you count a “oh, it’s your birthday? Happy birthday…go do a floor check before your ten, thanks.” Then yes.
amiee1234 2 points 1y ago
Nahhh call out with a stomach ache (not covid related) they don’t care about you enough to give you one day off???? You owe them nothing lol
vanney223 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Update!!!!! I got the time off after essentially harassing them LOL
wish me a happy 22!!!!
swollemolle 1 points 1y ago
And they wonder why partners wanna unionize. We're not your slaves. We are the reason your customers keep on coming back to your stores. Did you forget that we also have lives of our own? Did you forget that we also have families to spend time with, and important things we want to do outside of work? What would you do without your partners? Stop treating us like a commodity and start treating us like actual human beings with wants and needs.
harleyhoudini 1 points 1y ago
just call in sick, they can’t say no unless they know it your birthday
Indiancheif 1 points 1y ago
my birthday was on the fourth and I was sick as well. I asked if anyone could cover then when they couldn't I just came down with the flu.
TheDoubleDan 1 points 1y ago
I got denied the day off for my college graduation ceremony. Just call in, you'll be fine.
board-certified 1 points 1y ago
does your manager tell you that you’re denied before or after they end up posting the schedule.
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
You can talk to other stores and see if you can find someone to cover it for you.
Gameb0i6 -17 points 1y ago
It is a “request” they don’t have to approve it. Also it’s the holidays so technically these are blackout dates till 1/1/22.
Puzzleheaded-Coat-14 9 points 1y ago
Good thing their birthday is 1/3 so then can def just go enjoy themselves on their day
pookchun -16 points 1y ago
… it’s just a birthday. Here. Have another day
