ASU tax changes (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by scsharon98
Hey partners, since last Friday all of the partners at our store who attend ASU have been in panic mode because of a cryptic email about how we possibly won’t be getting paychecks for the rest of the month because of how Starbucks has changed the way they’re taxing us on the SCAP. So from what I understand now after our tuition and fees being covered up front, we only get 5,250 for the entire CALENDAR YEAR and are taxed on the rest which makes sense but it only happens at the end of every semester. For example I capped out at the 5,250 in my summer semester but only payed taxes on the 1,800 I went over. Because of that I had one of my September paychecks zeroed out which I didn’t realize until yesterday because I was out due to Covid that month and thought that was why. But now for the fall I’m paying taxes on the full amount Starbucks payed for which was 5,800 and the tax is getting taken out of our next 2 paychecks. So I am prepared to not be getting any paychecks the rest of this month and whatever is left goes into my W2. This info also was relayed from the guy I talked to on the Sbux partners benefit hotline who was an absolute asshole to me as I started to cry about not receiving paychecks lol. The only other pertinent info I know of is that we *might* see some of that money back on our tax returns and that it doesn’t affect grants, loans, federal awards, just money Starbucks pays. Does anyone know anything different or has anyone also looked into this? This is also a PSA because none of us would have known if I hadn’t dug deeper.

hey!! they sent an email out if you’re over it explaining which paychecks are impacted- did you get this?? if not I’ll send you a copy

I did get the email and I’m definitely over it but everyone at our store is confused and worried because both our temporary SM and people our partners talked to from the benefits hotline told us it would renew every semester which seems to be completely wrong. Also the example the email gave was only 1,000 over and I’m seemingly 5,800 over which after a bunch of math I did told me (if the info I have is correct) I won’t be getting paychecks for the rest of this month. And the guy I talked to on the hotline couldn’t give me an answer if I won’t be getting paychecks the rest of this month because “thats a hypothetical and I can’t talk in hypotheticals because those paychecks haven’t been made yet” I was like buddy I’m definitely not working enough to cover almost 2,000 in taxes with just 2 paychecks I’m just trying to figure out if I’m screwed in terms of rent, food, gas, etc.

wait no the one from this week?? where you get it withheld twice then it’s on you to pay the taxes??? also I agree this is ridiculous. FAFSA gives me like 2$ a year I go way over the limit
scsharon98 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yeah I don’t get anything from FAFSA lol yeah yeah that’s the email I’m talking about it seems like no one official at my store or people I talk to from the benefits hotline really knows all the info and can give me an answer so right now I’m preparing myself and people at our store to do the math themselves and possibly prepare themselves to get a zeroed out paycheck

My understanding is that on those two dates in Jan (I don’t remember) it’s a zero paycheck then everything else you don’t get withheld you have to pay yourself. Still dumb- I can’t afford a month of no paychecks lol. also they’re super not helpful with it, it’s annoying. Graduate debt free!!*if the government already gives u $$ and $15k of ASU tuition is paid by other aid

When were these sent? Was it by ASU or Starbucks? I'm doing ASU, didn't get anything but maybe I missed it?

It came from starbucks last week. If you are comfortable PMing me a Snapchat/Instagram/Facebook/wherever you can send images, I’ll send you a copy of mine

i’m so pissed about this. i can’t afford to miss two paychecks and i don’t qualify for financial aid! i called partner resources and they said maybe i could split it up over paychecks, but a lady from partner resources left me a voicemail saying that wasn’t possible. i completely feel you and i’m so upset. thought we got free college now i’m wondering how i’m going to pay rent

wait i go to asu and some of my partners do too, did this come in this weeks weekly update or something? or was it like last weeks weekly update? my ASU coach didn’t say anything about this to me and my SM and ASM haven’t said anything either. are we really not getting paid this month?): if i used sick time would i get paid or would they take that from me as well?

It affects our December paychecks and if they don’t cover the amount needed for the taxes it’s on us to pay the rest when we file taxes for this year. But if you went over the 5,250 at any point during the year you’re getting taxed on the rollover amount you went over by for tuition that Starbucks payed for. You can login $1 to look at if you went over at some point this year but will have to calculate the rest yourself by looking at the finance tab on your MyASU homepage

Neither it came in an email that was really cryptic and vague from ASU and Starbucks to my ASU email on the 3rd

Yeah my paycheck also shows this at $507 dollars but my check was only $427 and I still got $52 after taxes? Also did any see a payroll misc offset on theirs or a huge random amount of retro pay?
