I e always had a sneaking suspicion that most customers have no idea what they are ordering but running out of mocha 100% cemented the idea. (self.starbucksbaristas)

We ran out of mocha and white mocha on the same weekend and I was constantly asked in DTO "well what drinks *can* you make?" Like sir/ma'am, neither of us have the time for me to list the probably hundred other drinks/combinations we can make you...
geminitinkerbelle 6 points 1y ago
80,000- i googled how many drink combinations can you make at Starbucks.
rlblakey17 2 points 1y ago
That's wild haha I never would've guessed that many
donaldglovered 58 points 1y ago
i told someone on dt once we were out of mocha and she asked if that meant we couldn't make her a vsc cold brew
ThatOneTransGirl 63 points 1y ago
“No we can still make your vsc cb since it doesn’t require the sauce”

“Ok, I’ll take one of those with three pumps of your mocha please”

“😠”
Prudent_Preparation1 2 points 1y ago
ewwww who would order that lolll
miakodank 3 points 1y ago
It’s basically an iced mocha wym .. just more coffee flavor? The vscf is like whip..
Prudent_Preparation1 3 points 1y ago
i’m not sure if they meant vscf or just vsc but either way not really my preference of coffee starbux mocha is weird to me and it being cold reminds me of chocky milk 😥

When we’re out of Mocha, just tell the customers we’re out of “Chocolate Sauce.” Maybe if we called it “Chocolate” sauce they would grasp it. We call the other one “White Chocolate” so why not? We don’t say “White Mocha”
The_Infinite_Doctor 74 points 1y ago
I and everyone I know definitely call it white mocha-- maybe a regional thing?
FfierceLaw 13 points 1y ago
you're right, I don't know what I was thinking, was just waking up for the day! But I do alter what i call things for clarity, like I say "matcha frappuccino" or "matcha latte" and save "green tea" for non matcha beverages. I think I'll start saying "chocolate sauce" for the brown stuff
The_Infinite_Doctor 12 points 1y ago
Yeah, there are a lot of naming stupidities at sbux (matcha vs. green tea is one of my most hated, especially when training) and calling the *sauce* mocha is one of them because the sauce is chocolate, technically mocha is the drink that includes espresso (which is why it's called "hot *chocolate* not "hot mocha" when made w/o espresso.)

It's kind of like the size names-- I totally understand why no one can (or should have to) remember what name for large actually means large (which is neither, tall is small, grande is medium, and venti means 20, so puzzle that nonsense.)
Ordinary-Theory-8289 9 points 1y ago
Sbux started with 2 sizes- short and tall. Then they added a “large” one and called it grande which makes sense. Then eventually they needed to add larger sizes Bc America, so they went with venti-20 oz

Tbf I had no idea mocha was just chocolate and not coffee mixed with chocolate before I started working at Starbucks
Gold_Dragon_Rider 28 points 1y ago
This is because Starbucks misuses the word mocha. By definition, mocha means coffee + chocolate, or a special kind of coffee bean. I never understood why they purposely confuses their customers by calling the chocolate sauce mocha.
sailorgrumpycat 16 points 1y ago
It's the illusion of something fancier than it actually is, used to entice customers and alienate them from other coffee establishments, reinforcing there desire for Starbucks.
DisastrousOwls 4 points 1y ago
Same as "frappuccino," really, though in fairness to Sbux, they bought the trademarked name... And in fairness to 90+% of our customers, they aren't from New England and don't realize it's a portmanteau to begin with, *or* that it's a portmanteau of the very flat, non-exotic "frappe" (frap like crap; literally just a local term for a milkshake) + cappuccino, vs the bougier French frappé (frap-pay, Mickey D's style) + Italian cappuccino.

Because it sounds ✨💖💫fancy💫💖✨
FfierceLaw 10 points 1y ago
I think some of this terminology creates hardship for us and customers and I don’t judge them for that. People are often ordering a hot chocolate with no mocha, it totally proves your point

After they had listed things with chocolate 2-3 times I would quickly switch to saying, "We are out of our mocha sauce, which is our chocolate, so we can't make any chocolatey beverages today." I don't have time to waste letting them try to order all the things with mocha. I'd rather find a way to help them understand our term for chocolate to help us both not waste our time. Some baristas would just stand there allowing them to list everything when a simple explanation helps. It's okay to have people come through who are not regulars and don't understand that particular coffee shops system.
livingfortheliquid 18 points 1y ago
Yep. most customers don't look at the ingredients. They don't know how an espresso machine works. They don't know the difference between a latte and a mucho except one taste like chocolate.

In this case it's clear they didn't know that "mocha sauce" is chocolate. I'd not expect them to. It could have been solved with "out of mocho sauce, so we can't do chocolate flavored drinks".

When they do know what's going on, then they start to complain even more. They know when the drink sucks, they know when you cut corners.

In honesty we don't want customers to know more about how the magic is done. They don't need to know that for $2k (worth of good machines) they could do this at home everyday and not stand in line.
Jojothemofo1996 13 points 1y ago
This reminds of when our brewer broke and we put up a sign saying so. We even said we still have espresso drinks and that regular brewed coffee was going to take a bit since we had to do pour-overs. I can’t tell you how many people said “Oh. So you can’t make (espresso) drink?” We had three signs saying we still had espresso drinks.
Ellectre 6 points 1y ago
no literally, THIS. i had two people come in the other day asking if we had pumpkin, i said no sorry we ran out. girl then proceeded to ask if we could do the pumpkin cold foam and im like sorry no, that also requires pumpkin sauce.

then the person she was with is on his phone seemingly trying to find another starbucks nearby and then they leave. like 😭 maam we are out of pumpkin and i’m 99% sure our neighbor stores are too LMFAO but good luck on that pumpkin search!
amberlynn2687 6 points 1y ago
This happens so often! And more recently with all the shortages it seems we need a simplified list of what we CAN actually make that day.

you are bright - the customers are not

Okay so I’m just an Australian stalker / barista who thinks this is all really intriguing. I’ve never been to a Starbucks in my life, but I would probably think mocha sauce is chocolate sauce + coffee. Never heard of mocha meaning chocolate. Is that a Starbucks thing or an American thing?
i_meanOK 5 points 1y ago
(California barista) It's just a dumb Starbucks thing(all of our customers have no idea what it is) it's all because Starbucks calls their Chocolate syrup "mocha sauce " it's recipe was initially made FOR only the " cafe mocha latte " or just "mocha" as known by so many people.
Fluffybunnybadass 2 points 1y ago
Honestly i understood it to be the same and still do bc i've seen coffee + chocolate things to be marketed as "mocha" when done together. But the other person's explanation makes sense on why *sbux* did it. They never can have a logical naming solution for things.

My mom thinks mocha means coffee lol. She ordered a mocha cookie crumble frappe and they told her they didn’t have mocha but offered to sub white chocolate. She said yes.

Then complained they forgot the “chocolate” on top and inside 🤣
