The younger partners almost always want or need coverage for classes, studying, life, so make it known that you’re wanting to pick up (not swap) a 4-5 hour shift. Our store’s very civilized group chat is great for this and there’s always someone who wants to get rid of a shift. Just let them know what days you can take one. Also, other stores in your area will need coverage, let their managers or shift supervisors know you want some hours. If I did this, my SM would notice but he is really great and remembers our needs

I believe that insurance comes available after three months so you have to average 20 hrs a week for the first three months to be eligible. The time to bring it up with the manager is immediately. Be nice, but remind them that you need 20 hours a week to be eligible for benefits and you need to have insurance.

Initially it is 20 hrs for 3 consecutive months, then you get a month to 'decide' on a plan before coverage kicks in. Let's say you get 220 hrs on month 3, the first month of hours drop off and you have the next month to qualify until you hit 240 hrs.

So it really takes 3 months @ 20hrs on avg or a total of 240hrs over 3 months +1 month of waiting. That's under perfect conditions...

I think you have to work 25-30 hours to maintain the insurance after qualifying and you are 'audited' every 6months to ensure you've hit the min hours.

It is kind of shitty imo. Try to provide coverage / work at other stores if you need hrs and can't get them.

Hello! Starbucks has what is called audit periods. You have to have a collective of X amount of hours in order to qualify and maintain these benefits. They recommend 20 hours a week to reach this goal but it doesn't have to be exactly 20 a week. As long as you have the collective amount (which you can find on partner hub through benefits tab) for the audit period, you have benefits. :) You can also bring up your desire for more hours to your manager. :3

Hope this helped.

they also lowered it last month so it’ll be a little easier to attain

If they don’t give you the hours you need, you can pick up more hours/shifts at other stores. Go to other locations and give them your name and number and let them know you are looking to pick up shifts. We have an insane call off problem at our location so we usually have extra hours available to work. Also give your number to the supervisors as they frequently need to find cover.

Unfortunately, this may be part what your current manager is expecting you to do at your store. I noticed the more I picked shifts up…the lower my hours went but I always managed to get to the number of hours worked I wanted.

Yes I’ve already started happily covering shifts but there are Starbucks nearby even more short staffed so I might consider moving if necessary

I wouldn’t necessarily assume that the rest of your Starbucks career is going to mirror the hours you’re getting now. They usually give the newest partners the least amount of hours. If your availability is limited this might also impact it. Down the road you might very well be getting more than 20 hours assuming you work at a drive thru.

Yes it’s a drive thru and one of the busier stores in the city, so hopefully it works out! And you’re right might just take a little time

It's probably more than likely because of the upcoming holidays. Everyone's availability opens up and the SM is trying to balance Everyone's hours. Definitely a reminder conversation about needing to qualify for benefits and picking up shifts. As you're building a reputation of being reliable, you should see your hours increase 😉

I am working at Starbucks only for insurance. When I first started, they were always scheduling me for less than 20 hours. I casually and politely let the manager know I was worried about not getting enough hours for insurance, and she gave me the hours I needed.
Brief_Coat6526 3 points 1y ago
It’s an avg for the quarter
monzoink 3 points 1y ago
Put a sticky note right next to the schedule saying "(your name) is available to cover any shifts! (your phone number)" and you'll probably be able to pick some up
kell0313 3 points 1y ago
If it was the schedule for Christmas week perhaps it’s just because the store may be closed Christmas day? A lot of my team has an extra day off that week. I would just approach your manager assuming the best and ask if they know of how you can get more hours that week/if they think it will be an issue to get you at 20 going forward

Initial insurance eligibility is based on an average of hours worked in a given period of time. Initial eligibility is based on 240 hours worked on your first 3 FULL months of employment. Example your 1st day is Oct 10, your qualifying months are Nov, Dec, Jan enrollment in Feb and coverage kicks in March. If you do not make the first round, the qualifying months roll over : Jan Feb March ect.
You can call
The PCC and ask to have an audit run to see how many hours you need.
After that there are two audits/year
miniinovaa 1 points 1y ago
It’s winter break so once all the kiddos go back to school your hours should go up
jupiter_bug 1 points 1y ago
Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought the required hours to qualify was dropped down to 16hr/week
jnat1983 1 points 1y ago
I think I was told 20 but now I’m not sure
persona-2 2 points 1y ago
It was 20 at one point in history. Covid took it down and they keep extending the COVID # of hours. I want to say in reality it averages closer to 18 a week now.
