Why do people get so mad about their name being wrong when they wouldn’t speak up in a noisy store (self.starbucksbaristas)

So. One time, there was a customer who gave a name at the end of the transaction to me on reg. "Glenda."

Immediately after completing that sale, my SSV told me to sign off the register and hand that position over to another partner, and then to move to cafe/mobile bar for someone's 10.

I did and pulled Glenda's sticker. Glenda came out of the bathroom and I called out, "Glenda, I'm working on your latte now!" She stood directly in front of me on bar and glared at me. "My name is LINDA. How did you mess that up?"

I thought she was joking because the names rhyme, it's loud AF in the cafe, we're all wearing masks so things come out muffled and we can't always rely on reading lips anymore, and who actually \*really\* cares about something so insignificant as a wrong name on a latte sticker, right? So when she said, "How did you mess that up?" I replied, "Easily!"

She went OFF, lmao. Told me I was so unprofessional, so STUPID, so rude, so demeaning. She finished up by saying, "Give me my drink or get me your manager!" and I said, "Venti pumpkin spice almond milk latte for Glenda!" and slid a sleeve onto it. "I mean, Linda!" I scratched the "G" off the sticker with a black Sharpie. "\*lenda. Here you go. I hope you have a lovely day!"

"You, too," she cooed, as sickeningly sweet as her 10-pump monstrosity.

Then she got to the door and turned. "I am LINDA, the bad bitch, not GLENDA the good witch."

It was her mic drop.

"Bye, Melinda!"

My rebuttal.

Lol that gave me a good chuckle I have a coworker who would totally do the same thing

Luckily I haven't had anyone yell at me for this yet, surprisingly. I know I sometimes misspell people's names even if they spelt out cause auditory processing doesn't work to well with adhd. And I usually won't ask someone to spell it twice cause people who haven't had their coffee yet usually have a hella short fuse. So I avoid anything that could end in another ridiculous crazy customer story. With how much traffic my store gets there's usually a least one crazy customer story a day.

Sometimes if someone is rude to me I misspell their name phonetically. So yes, your name is getting called as Miranda but it’s spelled mirranneduh on the cup. Don’t be rude, Miranda.
boxinghamster16 16 points 1y ago
I have a regular MOP customer who spells her name Maeuranda.
merlin_my_cat 34 points 1y ago
Had a coworker put Trash instead of Trish. I don't blame her for being mad.
v_is_4_violet 7 points 1y ago
I almost always make accidents like this! Chubby finger syndrome is real 😮‍💨
greentea-6627 7 points 1y ago
😂😂😂 what
zewave_ 28 points 1y ago
honestly if i didn't understand most the time I'll just put a letter or something and tell them its theirs when they look. If they get bothered I just say "oh oops i accidentally clicked enter probably!"
PumpKiing 27 points 1y ago
I'm partially deaf in one ear on top of struggling with auditory processing, so taking names is HARD for me LOL

When Im on DTO I usually just put "Thanks" unless its a regular who's name I know.

On the rare occasions I'm taking cafe orders, I only ask for names if theres a lot of people inside and I know customers will likely try to grab every drink thinking its theirs.
Crazy_tomatillo_5 18 points 1y ago
One time I asked someone to repeat their name to me and they just said “no”
throatsofgoats 5 points 1y ago
Please tell me you entered the name as “No” and the bar partner called it out that way.
BatWeary 9 points 1y ago
i’ve absolutely done this. we also had a partner who was over people not giving their name (just saying no, not saying anything, etc) and started putting “pink shirt guy” “blonde woman” “blue shirt man” as the names 😭 at least the customers thought it was funny
paolathepanda 15 points 1y ago
I have no clue but I've had customers get nasty with me when I literally would repeat back the name to.ensure it's right and they fucking nod and confirm it is.. And then get all nasty at hand off telling me the name I put down is wrong like wtf?? Idiots
frenchsilkywilky 12 points 1y ago
because “Verrke” didn’t know how to keep her face forward and enunciate (edit: it was Brooke which seems so obvious to me now)
drinkliquidclocks 8 points 1y ago
When people correct me about their name at the handoff counter I just stare at them with a blank face... Takes all my power not to tell them "I do not care"
pickled_goblin 7 points 1y ago
I’m mostly deaf in my left ear, and people will mumble and I’ll ask them to repeat themselves and they do not change the way they said it at all, and then get really annoyed with me when I ask them to repeat themselves again, so i’ve just gotten to the point where when they mumble the first time around I just say “I’m deaf in one ear and I NEED you to speak up.” even after that they still don’t speak up more 😑
Royal_Development_25 6 points 1y ago
Plus it's not like we're getting payed to spell their names correctly!!
kreamedkern 4 points 1y ago
One time I ordered a coffee in NYC, gave them my name "Nat"... Got back a sticker that said "Nag." They did seem confused...

I laughed about it. Still do.
Sheep-8 3 points 1y ago
Why are people so mad when I ask them to repeat themselves??
Necessary_Low939 3 points 1y ago
Exactly. And it doesn’t matter
Tiffyost 3 points 1y ago
I’m the worst at spelling names.
greentea-6627 3 points 1y ago
When baristas get my name wrong I don't bother to correct them or anything, I just leave with my drink lol. Kinda excessive for someone to get mad over a misspelt name
rosallia 3 points 1y ago
anytime i go to a store, I always spell it out to make it easier on them so there isn't any confusion

I had one lady during a busy Saturday get real mad that I didn't get her name right. I also have trouble hearing correctly, never would do it out of ill intent. But this lady was so mad, she went back to my very busy line to ask me why her name was wrong and to fix it. She got her drink, she was just mad I got her name wrong. I said I'm sorry, \_\_\_\_\_ name that I got wrong and she lost it. I didn't do it on purpose, I tried to quickly correct myself. This was 2019.
Gameb0i6 2 points 1y ago
I will purposely spell a name wrong just for shit and giggles.
royalscandal 2 points 1y ago
Some of my coworkers were ESL and genuinely just don't know how to even begin to spell or understand english names so it upset me when customers would be impatient with them or make fun of misspelled or misheard names.
DapperStatistician59 1 points 1y ago
Beats me. I have a wierd name and I know it. Who gives a shit I do try to speak up though and don't take it personal if it's messed up. And I still tip.

Literally who cares. There isn’t a spelling test requirement to be a barista
pranasoup 12 points 1y ago
right? and as much as customers want to come at us for having common sense with name spelling, like have some common sense about your drink when it’s done. is the beverage what you ordered? is it a similar name? 🌈wow🌈
Malevolent_barnacle 2 points 1y ago

>"having common sense with name spelling"

Also reads racist microagression sooooooo...
Yeah. If it's max important to the customer (and they're not a regular yet) that's it's spelled right, take initiative lol
pranasoup 0 points 1y ago
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Binx_da_gay_cat 2 points 1y ago
Honestly grateful that I have partner numbers so my name comes out right. I chose Binx from Hocus Pocus as my chosen name (don't judge, it's comfy for me) and like the first time I used it irl is at a Chick-fil-a (church trip) and they spelled it "Vins" despite me spelling it out loudly for them, and the pizza place across from work spelled it "Bins" despite me also spelling it out.

Which, had I not watched them, I probably would've had to wait a solid few minutes to know that's me. The poor girl at Chick-Fil-A looked so confused bringing it up to our table with, "Vins?" And everyone looked so confused.

BEEnx.
Like minx, only with a B. I know it isn't normal but I wish it were at least a little closer to spelling?

I know I've screwed up orders a lot. It is what it is. I don't fault them, but I swear I probably need to get a tattoo to get my name right in public. Which if you want to complain, *write it down* so your barista can use that. Or use the app. That always works.
riddlvr 4 points 1y ago
I love your name
pranasoup 3 points 1y ago
i love your name too! mine is kat, and i get cat, pat, fat, hat, and bat. like… no haha.
AUserNameThatsTaken1 9 points 1y ago
Plus some people have auditory processing disorders and even when someone repeats stuff it could take awhile to understand. When I'm with my girlfriend sometimes I will repeat what she said if I find it weird and she will help correct me
Jaded_Plastic_2376 -19 points 1y ago
I’m not saying there should be but at least try and my name right.
LilacFlores 18 points 1y ago
Then just get the app and save everyone some time ✨
jazzysoranio 6 points 1y ago
I mean, I think spelling names correctly is important. But the point here is that the customer is the one that treated their own name as if it wasn’t important. You can’t claim to me that something is important to you if when it comes time to say it you just quietly mumble it as if it doesn’t matter.
clumsycalico 5 points 1y ago
Bro we get these Hot Takes from customers all day long get out of here lol
wanderer1522 7 points 1y ago
If you have a name that has a bunch of common spellings I don't know what you expect. If you really want it to be spelled right then spell it for the barista when they ask for your name.
sheep_heavenly 5 points 1y ago
Part of the problem is that Starbucks designs stores to direct and retain sound at the back line. So we don't just hear you, we hear the music, everyone else talking, and all the cacophony behind the line.

My husband got tired of it too, so he just has a gift card to swipe for points and then pays how he wants. Brings up the name automatically. Maybe that could help you!
Impatientone93 [OP] 4 points 1y ago
The funny thing I found out as I left was that he had scanned his app….so it was the name HE entered into HIS own phone that he was upset about. I about fell on the floor laughing
