Serving hot drinks without sleeves or double cupping... (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Royal_Development_25
Literally burned myself 100+ times handling these.. my manager made this new rule (I think) that we can only put sleeves on hot Venti cups unless someone orders a hot drink and they want a sleeve..I just don't think it's right at all. Regardless if it's a Venti or not, we should always put sleeves on/double cup hot drinks.. who else..??
Malevolent_barnacle 98 points 1y ago
that's been the policy the whole time (decades maybe?) but you try telling Karen she has to ask for a sleeve every time. Same reason we're never getting rid of straws lol
Royal_Development_25 [OP] 19 points 1y ago
Oop- I'm only 3 months in the job and my last manager wanted us to sleeve all hot drinks. I'm not really sure.. pretty sure that's the Libra in both of us just looking out for customers' safety (my last manager was a Libra and so am I).
clumsycalico 37 points 1y ago
This has always been the policy. (All ventis, extra hots, contains hot water) But I also sleeve every hot drink anyway because MY hands are sensitive and I’m not holding anything too hot lol.
Binx_da_gay_cat 8 points 1y ago
I sleeve all the drinks cause if I forget they ask anyway. And everyone at our store also does it.
venturealoha 1 points 1y ago
Brilliant
boopsbittie 80 points 1y ago
If it contains hot water or gets steamed extra hot it needs a sleeve, ventis always get a sleeve other wise it is not needed unless requested by a customer
aaronbdancer 70 points 1y ago
This was in a weekly update like a month ago.

Hot coffee, americano, and extra hot drinks always get sleeves. Regular temp lattes get no sleeve except venti unless requested
SelocAvrap 6 points 1y ago
That was in the weekly update a couple years ago too
BatWeary 19 points 1y ago
there was a weekly update some time ago that said regular temp lattes don’t get sleeves anymore. however my store has decided that’s completely BS because a cup of milk steamed at 160 degrees still burns my hand, so. we still sleeve all drinks or double cup them. besides it slows us down even more when everyone keeps asking for sleeves. it wastes enough time as is when people are screeching about straws every second.
KobeJay22 7 points 1y ago
Yup! I still sleeve all my hot drinks because almost every customer end’s up asking for one later and it slows me down.
inpain888 15 points 1y ago
If I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure you're supposed to sleeve hot drinks at least like americanos or hot coffee automatically. As per the training guide. A recent weekly update that informed us on shortages regarding stoppers and sleeves said not to sleeve drinks but it's understandable with lattes/espresso drinks.
drinkliquidclocks 9 points 1y ago
That's the new standard but I don't get it 🥴 why TF would they decide to not give sleeves
Royal_Development_25 [OP] 8 points 1y ago
It's literally a safety hazard. Look at how many lawsuits McDonald's have over their coffees being way hotter than average and people literally suffering burns.
VenusInFirs 8 points 1y ago
The only drinks I won’t sleeve normally are talls. Everything else gets a sleeve bc when I don’t, I guarantee you the customer will ask for one. It’s just easier to go ahead and do it. Also sorry, but I’m also double cupping venti americanos and brewed teas. The water is so hot that it weakens the cup and is too hot to hold even with a sleeve sometimes. I know it’s not standard but I’m trying to reduce my risk of being burned.
Random-Brunette 4 points 1y ago
I do this too. I ring in "double cup" as often as I can so it's tracked, but it's too stinking hot for even me to carry far, not going to feel safe handing it to a stupid, potentially sue-happy customer.
lewabwee 6 points 1y ago
I’ve never burnt myself on any of these? I mean if the drink is water (and therefore 200 degrees) you should be still putting sleeves on it but otherwise it doesn’t really seem hot enough.
Spinelise 5 points 1y ago
I am so confused with all the comments saying it's always been a rule?? I've worked at 7 different stores by now and we've always sleeved all of our drinks? 160 degrees for a regular latte is hecking hot, and for me it's too hot to hold sometimes. I've spilled hot lattes on my hand before and it's immediately turned red and puffy- and like another said, it's just an accident waiting to happen with customers. We ran out of sleeves just recently for the day and customers weren't happy that we didn't have them for their drinks.
ItzBoogieMan 5 points 1y ago
I been working for starbucks 2 years now. Always sleeved hot cups, this “new” rule is a load of horse shit. Starbucks will do ANYTHING to save money especially paying us more. Money grubbing bitches
spookyboi13 5 points 1y ago
tfw your weekly updates keep going missing by my evening shifts so you've been automatically sleeving all hot drinks... well, good to know going forward!

(also i know you can read them online from the store computers but im not using my tens/lunches to do that lol)
BatWeary 8 points 1y ago
i don’t know why people always say to read weekly updates on tens/lunches…that is my break time and i sure as hell won’t do it off the clock before my start time
Royal_Development_25 [OP] -3 points 1y ago
I mean..they're HOT beverages lol. I'm not just going to let a customer touch a freshly made hot drink with their bare hands
Binx_da_gay_cat 1 points 1y ago
Agreed. And they ask anyway.
spacespecterr 4 points 1y ago
it’s always been policy to ONLY sleeve ventis (unless it’s in the case of hot water drinks), but… i agree. i think it’s an issue waiting to happen, plus, no matter what, people always ask for a sleeve. it’s much less time consuming to just sleeve the drink. :/
prettylilfears 3 points 1y ago
it’s corporate policy but if i touch it and it hurts me i put a sleeve on it
Necessary_Low939 3 points 1y ago
U can hold it on the top so u don’t burn urself. I never burn myself holding it like that. Any hot drinks need a sleeve. You manager makes no sense.
Royal_Development_25 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I can't tell you how many times I burned myself either trying to transport the drink from the bar to the window. But I'll try holding it that way
Necessary_Low939 3 points 1y ago
🧐 that’s weird. Well screw ur manager and sleeve every cup. That fcker is being stingy for no reason. Last time I check there’s no shortage on sleeves
willywankaz432 3 points 1y ago
Well in the update before Christmas launch they stated that slaves wouldn’t be offered unless the customer asked but my manger said that’s stupid and we are going to continue to put sleeves on cups unless we run out of sleeves.

I’ve been working for about a month and my store sleeves ALL hot drinks
Royal_Development_25 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Good for you guys
bleeherr5 2 points 1y ago
Was in weekly update awhile back but we don’t follow the ruler change cause it’s dumb af
dfarner 2 points 1y ago
That’s the standard. Venti drinks or “hot water” drinks are the only thing that get sleeves
Internal-Ad-8820 1 points 1y ago
I can tell you for certain (because I had to specifically look it up for backup before I left the company) that:

1) ALL hot drinks made with hot water (hot tea, hot coffee, hot chai latte) get a sleeve no matter what size

2) Any hot drinks made with dairy or non-dairy, grande or smaller, do NOT get sleeved unless requested by a customer

3) ALL venti hot drinks, no matter the type, always get sleeved

This is on partner hub under the Beverage Resource Manual. Starbucks updated the policy about a month ago (probably to be cheap or because of supply chain issues). My former SM had told baristas that hot drinks don't get sleeved anymore, and I thought that was really strange and dangerous, so I looked it up and wow, lo and behold, *most drinks still get sleeved* 😱

If your manager gives you flak, challenge them to look it up and show you specifically, because they're definitely wrong

It’s not standard to sleeves except for specific drinks. It’s cuz of the shortage so why use up sleeves and then have none when you could only use it when necessary and I believe Canada has been doing it for a long time? Or maybe they give their drinks without lids 🤔 I forgot but I think I read something like that
boopsbittie 5 points 1y ago
I may be mistaken on policy but when is was hired, which was three years ago, my store always went by this rule. So I don’t think it’s because of shortages I believe they reiterated the already in place standard to help keep shortages less immense
coffeegirrrl 3 points 1y ago
You are 💯 correct. Water based drinks (chai, coffee, americanos, teas) get sleeves. Extra hot get sleeves. All venti cups, due to the structure of the cup, get sleeves. All others are by request.
miniinovaa 2 points 1y ago
Oh interesting! Maybe it was one of those hardly mentioned or enforced policies y’a know
boopsbittie 2 points 1y ago
Oh no definitely I agree hahaha I only remember this because a shift told me one day in my beginning months he always got burnt from my unsleeved pikes and that shit stuck with me after lol
student_notsurvivor 4 points 1y ago
I work at a Canadian store, pre-pandemic, we would only lid hot drinks if they were mobile or delivery. I joiner 2019 and as per the training guide back then, we were to sleeve all the hot drinks except short sizes.
