Any ASU Students/Graduates? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CorpBrig
I'm currently in community college right now but I've heard about the ASU online program and am on the fence about it, especially cause free is free.

My degree program (Software Engineering) would be eligible, but I'm on the fence about it. How are the classes structured (synchronous/asynchronous)? Is it worth it?

I’ve been in ASU for 2.5 years. Everyone’s experience is different but for me it’s been 100% worth it!

Classes are all asynchronous. You’ll have lecture videos, slides, assigned readings, etc to complete on your own schedule, and discussion posts, assignments, and exams to complete by given due dates. Most classes have due dates at least once a week; some have due dates every couple of days. A few of my professors have held live classes or study sessions on Zoom but they’re always optional.

I'm sure it could be! My major is IT so most of my work would be on a computer either way. I can only speak from my own experience but it's definitely not going to be the same for everybody.

I recommend ASU 100%. I did the last year+ of my bachelors there through Starbucks and it was a great decision! It allowed me to graduate debt free and that’s the most important thing. I was a history major so I’m not sure how other majors work, but I was able to complete all of my work on my own timetable and didn’t have to attend any class meetings at all. The only exceptions were Spanish classes which had one hour meetings once a week on zoom. I’ve heard from people that other majors like biology have to fly out there and take in person classes. No idea if that’s true tho. I only took one lab class and it was all online in a virtual lab.
And if you’re worried about your work ethic or self motivation at all, I honestly found it to be much more motivating than in person classes. When I attended school normally I hated every minute of being there and procrastinated on everything. But when I went to ASU I found myself getting ahead on projects and homework because I could work whenever I wanted to, not when class was in session.
Bottom line, I say go for it. If you hate it you can stop and no harm done. It’s free college and that’s pretty much the best deal you’ll ever find

Also, you can talk to your Starbucks College Achievement Plan advisor about how your specific major works and see if it’s right for you. I forget exactly what their job title is, but basically there are people that work on campus at ASU and their job is just to coordinate with Starbucks partners who are going to school online. So if you start the process they’ll get in touch with you and answer all of your questions
