can under 18 be on bar? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ryannmm5
at my normal store, they let high school students bar ALL the time. i was moved to a new store for a couple weeks to cover vacations, and they say anyone under 18 isn’t allowed to be on bar. what’s right?
accountedthrowaway5 316 points 1y ago
my store has a bunch of minors who work on bar so… idk what ur new store is talking about but why would they hire a barista and not let the barista do the job of a barista lol
ryannmm5 [OP] 144 points 1y ago
that’s what i’m saying… they let me stay on bar, but they said we’re not supposed to steam milk bc it’s “dangerous” like yes. so is getting steaming hot coffee or teas for fronts, and same with the oven… wonderful thinking..?
kitcat1210 72 points 1y ago
I know Teavana never hired under 18 because some reason to do with like hot water and stuff (at least this is what I was told like 8 years ago). So like there is some truth to that reasoning, but I have NEVER seen that be a thing at Starbucks. Minors are on bar all the time in my experience and around hot water and coffee all the time….. so like it doesnt make sense lmao. That’s such bullshit I’m so sorry
ryannmm5 [OP] 22 points 1y ago
haha it’s alright. i’ll live. they give me lots of bar time at my usual store because i’m one of the fastest in our store.
ProfessionalRock7940 6 points 1y ago
It's dangerous ohmygod 🤣🤣 legit never heard that before wtfff
Sarahthelizard 13 points 1y ago
Totally. capppppp
Pylon-Cam 78 points 1y ago
Unless your new store is in a different state which has super strict labor laws, you should be able to be on bar.
ryannmm5 [OP] 22 points 1y ago
i just think it’s weird because my store lets me, even the sm, but this new store i’m at for a little while says i cant😂😂 it’s so odd
Pylon-Cam 13 points 1y ago
Yeah. I started at 17, and my store never had an issue with me being on bar. That’s definitely odd 😂
ryannmm5 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
i started about 6 months ago, i turn 17 in a week and a half😂 so yeah lol
monzoink 44 points 1y ago
I would ask the store manager at the store you're covering at to show you the proof why you can't bar under 18.
ryannmm5 [OP] 18 points 1y ago
if i see her again i probably will bc that’s so weird
Responsible-Will6040 31 points 1y ago
Uh what. Yes. Yes they can. Never heard of that sounds like your new store is full of bs
ryannmm5 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
agreed!
wildaloofrebel55 14 points 1y ago
We have our minors on bar all the time!
ryannmm5 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
same:/ i wonder if it’s state laws?
nonyab23 2 points 1y ago
Maybe it’s an insurance thing
zambiers 9 points 1y ago
Yes, you can be on bar while under 18. Certain places might not let you be register but for the most part you should be able to be on bar.

Else why would you be a starbies ✨BARista✨
ryannmm5 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
yeah we’re allowed to be on everything! i’m even supposed to become a trainer once we hire someone new! i don’t understand 😂
Seriously_jst_4real 8 points 1y ago
Shit if we didn't allow minors on the bar..... we wouldn't be able to operate most of the time. Or we'd have to be.... Mobile Only.
I'd talk to your district manager about it, if the store manager is that type of nuts. Just so they can have that mistaken notion cleared up.
Grouchy_Arugula7257 7 points 1y ago
UK here. Our under 18 has to be working with a supervisor at all times. No shade but I honestly can't understand why they were hired, it's a waste of labour and drags the team down.
ryannmm5 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
wdym by “working with” like having a baby sitter?
Grouchy_Arugula7257 9 points 1y ago
Yep!!! Like if they are on bar, a supervisor has to stand next to them. Same for tills. It's ridiculous
ryannmm5 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
no way😐😐 that’s crazy. i wouldn’t work here if that was the case. we have a floor of under 18 year olds while our shift leader is in the back and we handle everything ourselves😂😂
“i want to speak to the manager”
*grabs most intimidating 17 year old on the floor*
“you got your drink, stop disrespecting my employee, good day”
^not actually how it goes but somewhat🤣. we get permission from our shift to do that so they can do their pulls without being disturbed 🤣🤣🤣
skeletaldecay 3 points 1y ago
I love this. I'm a new shift, so I'm still learning a lot of stuff. So I have plenty of moments where I'm like yes I am the supervisor, let me ask one of the minors what our policy is on that.
Trumps_left_bawsack 1 points 1y ago
That's not an actual law or anything, just your store being weird lol. I got hired when I was 16 and the only thing I wasn't really allowed to do was clean the oven unsupervised.
alexlynn047 5 points 1y ago
We had a 17 year old barista trainer.
ryannmm5 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
that’s about to be me!
Narwhal_Chicken 5 points 1y ago
I know a couple of years ago I interviewed for a Starbucks inside of a Target store and they said I couldn't do it because I was under 18 so maybe there are some labor laws in some weird cases that prohibit it. I know when I worked at a pizza place in high school I technically wasn't supposed to operate the oven in any capacity because I was under 18.
ryannmm5 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
that’s so odd. for starbucks it doesn’t make sense because either we’re going to be handling the hot drinks, doing over with the grilled cheeses and paninis that could burn you easier than steaming milk, etc. it’s just so weird😂
Narwhal_Chicken 3 points 1y ago
Agreed!
kimememememe 4 points 1y ago
Huh?? We have several high schoolers working at my Target Starbucks location that do bar that’s so odd
Beneficial_Ad_7044 1 points 1y ago
At my Tarbucks minors aren't allowed to work there. Only 18 or older. I'm in California lol.
Kdeabill 3 points 1y ago
Tarbucks TL here. Idk if it’s a state-specific thing, but we 100% have our minors (16 and 17 year olds) on bar. The only thing our minor baristas aren’t allowed to do is to load the cardboard baler/trash compactor
ilholtstilin 1 points 1y ago
You have a WHAT
Ordinary-Theory-8289 1 points 1y ago
They work at a target of course they have a trash compactor
board-certified 3 points 1y ago
wtf that’s not a rule and that’s discrimination
JHOOOOBI 3 points 1y ago
Yes. Yes they can. I used to work with high schoolers all the time and they were on bar frequently.
genderisntanoption 3 points 1y ago
im 17 and work on bar,,,,,, so no,,,,,
rasengannnnn 3 points 1y ago
uh yeah i'm 17 and work bar all the time idk what that's about
muhkiim 3 points 1y ago
The only time a minor is not allowed a certain position is if alcohol or dangerous equipment (like blades) are involved.
TemplarSensei7 3 points 1y ago
If your place offered alcohol (rare in my understanding), then sure, but a normal coffee bar? That’s a tad bit ridiculous
ryannmm5 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
agreed😐
CrispyJezus 3 points 1y ago
Starbucks Canada here. Never heard of this rule… ever LOL.
ryannmm5 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
so odd!! i’m going to ask the shift that said something about it next time i see her.
imboredwassup 3 points 1y ago
i’m 17 and i’m always on bar, that’s very strange. manager probably one of those people who hates kids and thinks we’re incompetent or something
ryannmm5 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
no honestly 😂
It_is_Katy 3 points 1y ago
I work with a handful of high school students and they bar all the time, that's whack. definitely ask for proof that says you can't do it.
the-cats-meouch 3 points 1y ago
yeah? i mean i work in wisco and the entire closing shift is minors, i don’t work close but I’d assume at least one of them has to bar lol
ryannmm5 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
we’re not allowed to have any minors work past 9😂
the-cats-meouch 3 points 1y ago
we start close at 7 because we’re so understaffed, everyone’s out by 8:30 besides shifts, so that’s not a problem. when i say ‘closing’ i mean after 2pm lol
ryannmm5 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
we start closing jobs around 5-6 but actually start closing around 8 and we’re usually done around 9:30. i’ve only closed once before my sm said i wasn’t supposed to since it’s during the school year. my last job let me stay until 11🤣 i don’t mind it though. i prefer morning shifts since i do online.
domelid 2 points 1y ago
Im a high schooler barista and im usually on bar during my shifts lmfao
PaleontologistLoud37 2 points 1y ago
i'm 17 and i'm regularly on bar, along with all of my 16/17 year old coworkers too.
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
[deleted]
Elliotisnotokay 2 points 1y ago
Yeah. Some of the best people on bar at my store are high schoolers
kostplay 2 points 1y ago
as a minor (licensed store) there’s nothing i can’t do to my knowledge. im allowed on bar, on oven, etc. i can clean and wash everything too.
spiiderblast 2 points 1y ago
You can be under 18 on bar, but you can’t be under 18 to do tips! You also need to be 18 or older to be a shift but not to be a shift trainer
Automatic_Row_5843 2 points 1y ago
I vaguely remember they did try to make this a rule when I worked there. A very stupid rule, I’m sure they very quickly did away with it during Covid and the staffing shortage.
Kimmikkokat 2 points 1y ago
Maybe check your city and county laws for that? Cuz I'm pretty sure you should be fine. But sometimes super local laws will be in place and can change things from city to city.
Radiant_Session6601 2 points 1y ago
Why wouldn’t they be allowed on bar it’s not like Starbucks sells alcohol it’s literally coffee and caffeinated drinks
AwstinEvans 2 points 1y ago
I'm 17 and basically run my store lol
UnselfishTwo968 2 points 1y ago
Some Starbucks Locations/States Allow Alcohol To Be Served In The Restaurant/Drinks I've Never Seen Alcoholic Drinks In A Starbucks However Because Of This You Might Not Be Allowed To Work On The Bar If Your Under 18 It's Even One Of The Requirements For When You Fill Out Forms Stating If Your Under 18 For Alcoholic Based Restaurants
ryannmm5 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
we do not serve alcoholic drinks, any of the ones in our district.
UnselfishTwo968 1 points 1y ago
Then Honestly I Have No Fucking Idea What There Smoking In Your Store
ryannmm5 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
honestly same
Gameb0i6 2 points 1y ago
We have a new hire who is under 18. He’s on bar all the time.
ryannmm5 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
at my usual store we have… i want to say 10/34 employees are minors!
this new store i’m subbing in at has… well… me! another one as well on thursday/friday. also subbing in from my store
ObjectiveError3253 2 points 1y ago
anybody can be on bar.
Adan0256 2 points 1y ago
Well your not making Alcohol your making coffee so I assume why not.
Stovetopstuffnbox 2 points 1y ago
I worked almost entirely on bar as a 16 year old. The manager probably didn’t want you on bar for some reason. That’s wack as fuck
ryannmm5 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
i wonder if it’s bc the sm loves me so much. the sm was one of the two people who hired me. i went to A store, and said sm works at B store. B store sm won’t stop gushing to the partners that she wants to steal me for her store but my A store sm won’t allow it. i wouldn’t be surprised if the shift at B store is just pissed. the B store sm specifically asked me the first shift i worked in which spot was my favorite. when they have people subbing in to help they try to stick the helpers in their favorite spot as a thank you. said shift was right there when it happened. so that could be it. B store sm didn’t have an issue with me barring, but all the other partners were told the same thing. i was telling them all today about the responses and they seemed genuinely surprised. so i don’t know tbh😂
_notaprilbutmayy 2 points 1y ago
that’s really weird…i’m now 17, been working at sbux for over a year and i’ve never heard anything about that
CapableArtist123 2 points 1y ago
Um this isn’t in the handbook, I would report this to your DM and tell them that someone is promoting “false policies” which can hinder partner from learning the actual training
Action_Sandals 2 points 1y ago
Lol. Yes.
LavanderSkies0930 2 points 1y ago
They should be. My old store has 16 year olds on bar. There are 16 year olds frying chicken and some restaurants
csaine 2 points 1y ago
It only matters if alcohol is involved. Starbucks does not serve alcohol, so it does not apply.
verdeuce 2 points 1y ago
If it’s in the job description then anyone who is hired can do the job….
