Heya! Still on my first job... 16 and been working at my local McDonalds for 7 months now. I’m a Team Leader and liked by most managers/crew, but our ‘people manager’ is a super rude person... I as well as another TL only have 4 hours scheduled for next week, whereas the manager’s favourite is scheduled 30hrs. This isn’t the first time that something like this has happened, and with a Starbucks being opened in my town, I think it’s time for me to consider a little change.
I’ve put my application in, but do you guys have any advice? Do I have a chance at getting in?

you definitely have a chance at the job let alone, landing an interview. I’d definitely recommend bringing up your position at your old job sometime throughout your interview as landing that in such a short time as well as your age is impressive

Thanks! Being fully honest, I think the only reason I landed that position was because I actually worked hard... grew up with more old fashioned parents who made sure to teach the importance of hard work. Super thankful for that though
Well, my application is in... I’ll definitely bring up my position at my current job if I score an interview. Really appreciate the encouragement!

I think Starbucks don't really hire shifts that young and certain stores will be biased against minors because of the extra breaks and curfew (at least in this state).
But yeah, put in an application and follow up in the nearest store. Ask to speak to the Store manager and then ask if they can connect you with the Store manager that's opening that new location.

That’s fair. Here in Ontario we actually don’t have any curfews or extra breaks for minors... we actually get paid a dollar less an hour (meaning we’re cheaper for stores to keep on the clock).
Alright... I’ll do that, thanks!

Whoa, I don't know how your labor market is in Ontario, but if it's anything like the US, I would not take a dollar less anywhere in food service. Set your price especially with some leadership experience.

Honestly, I find the whole student wage thing stupid, but if it means it levels the playing field a little bit between adult hires and students, I’m not going to complain a whole lot. My biggest gripe is that as a TL at McDs, I still get paid less than adult minimum wage with 3 raises. Not super fair imo, but honestly, there’s not a whole lot one can do when all the companies do the same thing

You can't negotiate your wage in Canada?

if it's cali we're talking, i dont even think she can be a shift until she's 18 regardless. but she would most likely land the barista role and get promoted in a couple of years
SpikyCactus_ [OP]2 points1y ago
Ontario Canada actually! As I was saying to someone else, even if I could get a spot as a supervisor under 18, I’d honestly prefer to just start at barista anyways. People seem to respect you more if you prove yourself
Gwillybean1 points1y ago
I don’t think you could be a shift, as you have to be 18 to be a key holder. But you’d most definitely make a great barista!!

Honestly, even if I could, I don’t think I’d want to start at a new restaurant as a supervisor. The best leaders are the ones who started just like everyone else in my opinion. But I do appreciate it!

Mention that you were able to handle multiple tasks and once hence why you became a team lead, also mention connections with customers you’ve made in the past at McDonald’s. It’s all about customer connections at Starbiez
