Being off late (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Connect-Arrival3041
I was off today at 1 and was waiting for someone to relieve me of my position I was DTO&W. Keep in mind it is finals week and I have my availability set to 1 because I make plans outside of my set schedule. I also reminded the shift at 12:40 that I would be off soon that way if they were gona give me a task they can plan accordingly so I’m off on time. So the time is now 1 and I tell my shift I’m off she tells me to wait and that someone is coming for me. I’m beginning to get annoyed because it is now 1:10. I let my shift know again that I need to be off immediately and she just ignores me at 1:17 someone finally takes over for me so I go to clock out, but then the shift stops me and tells me to do a task before I am off. At this point I am furious and say “respectfully no I’ve been off and it’s my time to leave” the shift tells me “go do the task right now” I was in awe and felt like I didn’t have a choice what was I supposed to do? I attempted to stand up for myself and it failed. My store has a constant problem of not letting their employees out on time and I’ve even spoken to the store manager about it I have no idea what to do this isn’t fair to me I have a set availability for a reason, lmao I just needed to rant but advice is welcome

CLOCK OUT. Say no just like you did (gold star for your response!!), clock out, and leave. Stay 5 minutes past to demonstrate you're a team player and not just watching the clock (evenifyouarecoughcough) but freaking do not stay to do extra tasks if you don't want to. You are never obligated.

You did EVERYTHING RIGHT up until you didn't just clock out and walk out when ordered to do the task. Reminder of your time off in advance, gold star. Alert that you're already over your time, gold star. Defending your time and declining extra work, gold star. Next step is to follow through with it. "She asked me to stay late and I said I couldn't" is defense enough - take it to your SM, to your DM, to the PCC if you have to. Keep that shiny spine, you're doing a great job and I'm proud of you.

P.S. it is your shift's problem if their floor is running short, not yours.

Oh man, I'm sorry. I'll be honest, as a shift, I understand that sometimes people take awhile to get on, like yeah I'm sending so and so to replace you but they're taking 5 minutes to clock in, but it ABSOLUTELY should not have gone on that long, and they should have let you go without asking you to do tasking first. I can't imagine asking a barista to do tasking when they've already stayed 20 minutes late, unless they ok'd it first

You said you've already talked to your sm, maybe take your availability back a bit? Say you're only available till 12:30, that way it's not as big of a problem if you're there late. It's fucked up that you have to do that, but if thats what it's gonna take its what I would do

Yea I understand that there’s just some days where I schedule an appt or have plans and base the time I’ll be at my plans based off my scheduled time which I usually give myself a 10 min grace period to be safe but today really pushed it for me after the task I was off about 30 min later after I was supposed to be off

next time just leave exactly at 1. it is not your fault if they don’t have coverage. you worked your scheduled time, did your job, and now you get to leave. they can’t penalize you for having shit to do. i would’ve laughed in that shift’s face and texted the store manager on my way out.

Back when I was a barista I would always say I have an appointment I have to get to so I don’t “ask” I “tell” then I’m leaving. Now that I’m a shift supervisor I always make sure people go home on time unless they’ve told me they can stay longer. Our lives are more important than the store’s because SURPRISE the store is not a person and is not alive. I couldn’t care less if the store/corporate suffers because we were short staffed, why should the baristas and shifts be the ones who suffer for it. This is the reason we have a “labor shortage” because our baristas are treated this way as if their time and lives are less important than the store’s business. This is why baristas are quitting left and right.

You're thinking too much about this. Remind your shift 15mins before, then clock out at your scheduled time. As long as there are two people there, bounce. If you're in a corporate store and they're the only person there, then that can be tricky. It's still a manager issue about scheduling.

"Go do your task" lol next time laugh in their face. They're a shift, not your parents.

Good god Im so sorry! As a shift, I do admit sometimes I will send people home 5 minutes over their scheduled time yet at all costs avoid it and usually try and send them 5 minutes early. TWENTY MINUTES? Dude I would have just walked out of that store and told that SSV it is their problem they didn’t stack their breaks correctly or that they themselves didn’t want to take over for you so you could leave.

I sometimes end up staying late but when I don't have anything going on I don't mind. Last night it was, "Can you stay an extra 10 so she can go on her break?" And then I did and she was like, "You can go... unless you want to stay until 5:30 and help out." Sure lol. Both were questions, not mandatory. I could've said no and my shift would've respected it.

Staying is appreciate when offered! But it seems OP was forced, which is not okay and unfair to their time 😅

I would’ve said. Look I let you know at 12:40. This is my set availability and I’m out of here. it’s not your problem.
