The Bar God Complex (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by carolineislaughing
We have an opening shift position at our store and all these partners at my store are applying when they are not pleasant to work with when they aren’t on bar. One of the partners at my store was put on window and then went to the shift and complained about it until they got moved to bar. 🤨🤨🤨 Make that make sense.

I hate when partners think they are ready to move up in positions because they are good at bar. Being a shift is more than knowing how to do everything, it’s about helping others do those things. Like, none of the shifts rarely are on bar unless it’s cold bar so they can flex the play easily or just watch the play. So what makes them think they are ready to move up? I don’t want to work for someone who is always putting themselves on Drive Bar because “I just don’t want DTO” I have ZERO RESPECT FOR THAT.

All Im saying, if you wouldn’t do it, don’t ask me to do it.

as someone who only gets put on window, thank you. im pretty good at bar, it’s just that everyone else has worked there longer. being on DTO my entire 4-5 hour shift 5 days a week is really just… awful.
and the ssv is super mean and talks a lot of trash about everyone so i don’t even feel comfortable saying something about it.
for real I completely agree. help and be fair that’s all we ask

I am seriously considering quitting if they get promoted. Not worth it.

one more thing!! i hate the superiority complex in some experienced partners. just be nice!! to the new partners!! they/we are just trying to learn and help

The first thing I had to accept when I became an SSV is that I no longer get to just work the positions that I enjoy, because I have to be mobile and able to support/flex the play. I effin HATE being on register, but I feel like that’s where I spend most of my time when I’m not doing pulls, money, etc.

My store has been making more of an effort to rotate partners to different positions, mostly to cut down on register fatigue and bar diva behavior.

Got a little chuckle out of the phrase bar diva.

> "I won't ask you to do something I wouldn't do"

I lived by that saying when I was a ssv

Edit: apparently I had a stroke writing that

Same. I make damn sure the team sees when I get down and clean the cold bar drain. If i expect you to do it, you best believe im willing to

Good Shifts are masters of the Customer Support cycle, that's where they live: making sure everyone else has the support in place to get the rest of everything else done. Yeah, someone needs to make the drinks in a timely fashion, but you'll get through peak much better/smoother when everyone's contributing evenly.

I’m super lucky because my closing baristas are super strong CS partners. I can do CS, and do it well, I just absolutely HATE it as a shift, I can never get my tasks done lol

Yes Omg! There’s a couple of slightly bad apples at my store so I know what y’all mean and I reeeeeally want to get better at bar but since I have great customer service and can make connections very easily (yes I’m allowed to brag lol) they always put me on DT and DTO but I’m like “I’m burnt out let me leeeeearn”

Luckily I have some great coworkers and they help me learn as I take orders or will have me try to make the drinks if we are slow. But they have been putting me on bar on days they know we are not busy! So now I know how to make drinks I just need to get faster O- O

The territorialism partners have developed over the past few years is not just obnoxious, it's detrimental to the store in objectively measurable ways.

Oof, yeah you are 100% correct here. I was a shift for about 6 years before moving on and I was hardly ever on bar (only in the extremely rare cases where another shift had the floor).

It was policy in our district at least to have shifts in order support or CS in order to be maneuverable and able to see what is going on at all positions.

I was constantly jumping from helping on till, bar support, taking some heat off our CS person and running for supplies as needed and keeping an eye out for difficult customers or training when needed.

It comes with the position, you gotta have a good feel for the store momentum and be able to see a potential problem at a glance and jump to help solve it.

just because you’re good at bar doesn’t automatically mean you qualify to be a good SSV? most of the SSV’s at my store never take bar unless they need a lot of help getting the orders out bc it’s a planted position so if they need to run somewhere to handle a problem bc they’re literally in charge they wouldn’t be able to just leave their position. I don’t see any of the partners you’re describing willingly putting themselves on Warming, DTO or CS which are prob the best positions to put yourself in as a shift. i hope none of them get picked for your sake!

All most all the shifts at my store put themselves on bar 🧍🏾‍♀️ and because of that I was stuck on just drive thru window 5 days a week for three months until I started complaining.
Swordxxxx 2 points 1y ago
As a shift supervisor, I always give each partner two options when getting onto the floor after a break or just starting their shift on where they would like to be. From there whichever one they don’t want to do, is what I take unless it’s DTR which I find makes it so I can’t focus on being the play caller when there. Moral goes up when I get on the floor and everyone is in a position they want to be in. Not just one person but everyone.

Yeah, I get hating window. I get put there the majority of my shifts. However, I’d hate it a lot less if it was like 2 hours or so at a time.

Bar, for most people, is the most enjoyable position. However, if you’re going to be a shift lead you’re going to need to know how to be fair and reasonable. If you’re just going to put yourself on bar that’s 1) not fair and 2) you’re going to be too busy to actually understand what’s going on and lead accordingly.

Best positions for shift lead is probably CS, cafe bar support or DTO so you can see what’s going on in the store. I’d assume most of a shift leads job is lead and support not grind on bar lol.
