4. Dot isn’t quite right and the micro foam has too many large bubbles for the smooth texture of a flat white.

Gotcha. Any tips?

Hmmm did you tap the pitcher hard to get rid of the larger bubbles?
I found when I did flat whites (which I like drinking so I made a lot of them lol) the most important part was paying super close attention to how I was steaming.
The pour aspect just gets easier with time.

Mm-hmm. And a light swirl.
I'm pretty sure it's coming down more to my steaming abilities than the pour.

Flat whites I found are one of those drinks where the angle of the steam wand really makes a difference to the quality of the foam. I also have not used the newer maestrana machines because I left right before they were installed so I have no idea how easy it is to steam with them.

I've never had to make a flat white - can you explain what it is?
giftedburn0ut2 points1y ago
it has the same amount of foam as a latte, but they're made with whole milk, ristretto shots and an extra shot. also when you're pouring them you have to pour really slow so you can get that white dot on top. grooming the milk is really important!

it’s ristretto shots, 2t 3g 3v. and whole milk with the dot on top

everyone is saying pretty much the same major points about flat whites, grooming the milk is super important, but you also have to foam the milk properly. aerating it for too long will leave you with too much foam, and flat whites don’t really require a lot of foam since there should be a small dot of foam. I let the shots run alongside the side of the cup to reduce bubbles with the espresso and i aerate the milk slightly less than i do for a latte, and i make sure the milk is swirling when i am steaming it. it’s really good though! i know we don’t really have a lot of time to make perfect drinks at starbucks but we can always do our best and get better!

I find flat whites need just a touch of frothing, even less than a latte, only slightly though.
Of course tap the pitcher and swirl as standard for steaming milk
If you’re milk has one second to sit before being used, that can help.
Pour slow and start at the cup and slowly raise the level of the pitcher so it’s further from the cup and high in the air.
You don’t necessarily need to pour it directly in the middle for 90% of the pour. You can use this to dissolve any imperfections.
Stop pouring, re-level the milk pitcher and bring it close to finish with the dot.
Idk if this was a coherent description hahaha but it works for me

Very great description! Will try this out.

Some customers really get into it. The other day I witnessed a young female in a Reserve, remove her lid and saw a nice lily looking design on her foam. I think she orgasmed.

8 maybe... The microform could be better but at least you got a dot at all, I've seen way worse 😆 I made a heart on accident the other day so I'm feeling particularly judgmental

What do u think how does it taste. Listen I’ve been doing this for a long time idk bubbles or color or whatever. It only matters to your taste. Is it sour is it bitter. Milk frothing is subjective- I’ve frothed milk that looked like crap but mixed taste great but yes if frothed correctly it would taste rich n creamy look like wet paint.
