No more tips? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ziptiedinatrunk
Customer here- I placed my order and went looking for the tip jar. The barista told me they were no longer allowed to accept tips. Is this at all Starbucks locations? Did they up your pay? I feel really bad about not being able to tip.

Was this a licenced store maybe? Like one in a target or an airport?
ziptiedinatrunk [OP] 29 points 1y ago
It was in a grocery store.
emily_renae99 64 points 1y ago
If it’s in a grocery store that’s why they can’t accept tips. Lots of the licensed stores are like that because of the grocery store they are in-not because of Starbucks. Which stinks
ziptiedinatrunk [OP] 33 points 1y ago
Ohh... that is STUPID.AS.F! Ok, well now I know. Damn, I..that's just ridiculous. Especially in the store. Every time I walk by that place the workers look miserable and considering the crowd in that grocery store, no wonder. Jeeesh.
emily_renae99 16 points 1y ago
I used to work in one of those…they are genuinely awful. And they don’t get the same benefits as Starbucks employees. Definitely not worth it.
darkwolf523 6 points 1y ago
Really? I worked in a licensed store before going to a corporate one. And they accepted tips. Maybe it’s a state/country thing?
emily_renae99 8 points 1y ago
It depends on where the license store is. Some grocery stores allow tips and some don’t.
ziptiedinatrunk [OP] 3 points 1y ago
See, I am pretty sure they did accept tips at one point. I swear the time I had bought coffee there before they had a tip jar out. However, I am not a frequent flyer there though and it's been months between the purchases. Maybe I am crazy, but l think I would have noticed then like I did this time.

I really thought the explanation was going to be something like cash handling because of covid or something.
JHOOOOBI 1 points 1y ago
That’s odd. Any Starbucks I’ve seen inside of a grocery store accepts tips. I work in a hospital and we don’t accept tips, however I get paid $15 an hour and that’s going up to 17 soon. So it all evens out. But at a grocery store I would assume they could still accept tips.
ziptiedinatrunk [OP] 3 points 1y ago
If you have the time to explain, why does that make a difference? Should it make a difference?

Currently, I have just decided not to go there again. It is too weird not being able to tip & there are plenty of local shops that have better prices I can support. However, I am curious if Starbucks has a valid reason for the decision.

The kiosk employees are actually the grocery store employees and are therefore in the union. The grocery I worked at told me it was not allowed because its unfair for baristas to get tips but no one else in the store makes tips. Yes this is stupid, i agree. Some stores dont even allow free drinks on the clock.
emily_renae99 4 points 1y ago
Yes! It was so stupid. The license store I was in didn’t allow free drinks or food or anything.
humiddefy 2 points 1y ago
I work at Tarbucks and we're not supposed to take tips or free drinks on the clock. We can't technically be punished for taking tips as long as we're not soliciting them to my knowledge, but we could be fired for making free drinks if they really wanted to throw the book at us, as it could be considered theft. Of course we also don't have a union as Target employees, but we do start at 15 an hour.

It isn't necessarily Starbucks that is the reason. The licenced kiosk Starbucks that you see in these grocery stores are actually a part of the store itself as opposed to being run by corporate Starbucks. The license agreement doesn't necessitate that employees at these locations get the same benefits as those received at corporate locations (because the employees work for the grocery store). At some of these locations the employees are also represented by unions, so that is another factor separate from Starbucks that determines pay/benefits.
ziptiedinatrunk [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Thank you for the detailed response.the union thing makes sense, i bet in some places management looks the other way. This is one explanation as to why they were suddenly not able to take tips. A member of management noticed or another employee complained.
leeblissy 41 points 1y ago
my store takes tips as well as the pay raise. idk why your particular local store isn't taking them, that's so sad :( probably local management deciding baristas don't need/deserve it but that's definitely not a national thing
ziptiedinatrunk [OP] 15 points 1y ago
Well hell ..that is the worse. I was a barista many moons ago and imo not tipping is the rudest thing ever. Wtf... Starbucks.
Prudent_Preparation1 3 points 1y ago
there’s a pay raise happening? does this include for 15/hr people already ?
faunaflorist 3 points 1y ago
Everyone will be moved up to $15 in June/July. If you are a partner of 2-10 years you get small percentage raise which is higher based on how long you’ve been with SBUX this January before the final increase. The percentage will be tacked onto that 15 in the case you are a partner of 2 or more years.

This is just what I was told, I might have gotten some exact info wrong but that’s the gist of it
Prudent_Preparation1 1 points 1y ago
sounds about right. thank you

My best friend works at a Target Starbs and they’re not allowed to take tips but they do it under the counter anyways. So maybe this particular barista just couldn’t bc a manager was around
Level_Alps7224 1 points 1y ago
Can vouch for this working at tarbucks when have a specific “not a tip jar” cup just placed out of view so if it tip is offered it goes into the cup and tucked behind register
ProfessionalRock7940 2 points 1y ago
I used to work in a Barnes and Noble cafe, we weren't allowed to accept tips but we had ceramic cups by the register to display the different cup sizes and people would put tips in there lol. Eventually store leadership made us get rid of them 😞
ziptiedinatrunk [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Aww that sucks. I don't think Barnes and Nobles is even unionized.
FfierceLaw 2 points 1y ago
Come to my store and tip away! That store apparently has an SM or DM who has plenty of labor and doesn't need to worry about losing or retaining or hiring because that would cause a big attitude problem among baristas
Reddit-user-256 1 points 1y ago
Also customer here- how do I find the tip option for mobile? I haven’t been able to find it at all
maidofpuns 1 points 1y ago
If you happen to be close with any of the employees at the store you go to, see if they can get a copy of their employee manual for you. I work at a Tarbucks and official Target policy (for ALL team members, not just Starbucks) is to refuse a tip. But if the guest insists, you are then allowed to accept it (just don't be dishonest about it). People sometimes leave money on the counter for us without us noticing or otherwise insist on leaving tips. We use it to buy snacks rather than splitting it up since the money never leaves the store then and feels a bit more fairly distributed (as opposed to giving everyone like $5 every 2-3 weeks the "tip jar" is full).
