They usually burn out pretty hard in my experience.

Yes, I don't doubt that but that is no excuse to belittle your team and making baristas cry

As an SM on here what can I do to ensure my team feels supported while also upholding Starbuck standards?

Just I haven’t met a SM that isn’t condescending. Just remember your partners are fully capable grown beings. Also theres only so much connecting a human can do. We get almost berated for not connecting enough when in reality people just want to get their drink and go. Please don’t get mad at partners calling out sick. I’ve been guilted when I have to call out when I’m actually sick and it just makes me feel bad.
Also I’m gonna be real with you, sometimes being in routine sucks and slows us down. When one person is on bar, using one bar to make lattes and the other to cue shots for americanos/shaken espressos speeds up the process. There’s alot of rules and protocols I understand, but it’s annoying to have your own way of doing something that’s efficient for you and helps you get things out quickly but still made correctly, and have someone come over and micromanage because you’re not doing it exactly how its supposed to be done (ex using 2 bars, pulling out more than 2 stickers for warming).
Lastly, if a partner asks for certain accommodations please try to accommodate. I’m allergic to dust like I get hives and I’m still told to clean the dust, so I have to bring benadryl in my bag. I’m not trying to be lazy and it’s taken like I am.

For my store at least, some patients, and we can do without a condescending tone. We appreciate coaching but not being spoken down to and berateing us in front of customers. There is a lack of tackt

We have one, we really do. We have to respect that he can’t be burdened with all kinds of minutiae and be effective at his job. When I started almost a year ago people would be in the back pouring out their soul, or agitated, and he would look supportive and engaged when I saw this in passing. Now he’s still friendly but a bit more distant. Still 100% reliable in scheduling, respecting our availability, giving us our reasonable time off requests (probably unreasonable ones too.) But on the floor less. He shares that he uses the Lyra benefit and recommends it to us too. I am glad if he’s taking care of himself, making an effort to be present for his spouse and maintaining balance while letting trusted SSVs and baristas run the shifts. Edit, I have to add that he is amazing at hiring good people, we’re a happy group. If I complain it’s about corporate or the DM

See, we are always relieved when our SM leaves the floors of if she works from home. Our DM actually seems like he cares but he's still fairly new

My old manager was so so perfect and I cry about his leave when I know I won't come into to work and see him again 😢😢. So sweet and friendly and helpful and reliable and accomodating and responsible and respectful; I could go on I swear. Such a lad.

My SM is pretty cool to say the least even thought she does have her moments sometimes she's pretty cool. I actually couldn't ask for a better manager

You know you can take an loa for your mental health right?
amazing_redhead 2 points 1y ago
I need the money. I'm kinda stuck between a not so great home life and a not so great work environment. I've been looking at maybe transferring. It's just hard because I enjoy most of my coworkers. However, you're right, I should prioritize my mental health
mstrandquist8 2 points 1y ago
I’ve definitely been there. I’m really sorry you’re in such a tough position. If you aren’t able to take an loa right now because of money, try and take advantage of the benefits they do offer, like Lyra. If they are gonna make us work for shitty wages, we should at least milk all the benefits we can. I found a wonderful therapist on Lyra and have gotten a lot out of my sessions.

I've been on it with Lyra 👌I am greatful for the benefits and adore my therapist. I also appreciate yall for letting me vent(i)

I'm the department manager of my liscnsed store, but my store director above me, and our DM and RM are honestly great. I feel like I lucked out so hard. Yes they're by the books and hold high standards but they treat us like people and are actively happy for our wins and helpful when we're struggling.

I'm so happy for you! I hope Sbux corperate will be able to look at them as an example of good management

I honestly think my SM is pretty great. Very empathetic and understanding.
