It’s literally policy???
flamingavocados 47 points 1y ago
Nothing wrong with taking a second to pop into the back room and get some water or a drink you had from break when things are quiet. My SM is pretty understanding of it and we don’t take advantage of it.

Drinking on the floor though? Unsanitary.
aaronbdancer 46 points 1y ago
It’s a food safety violation to drink on the floor
terriblescreenwriter 30 points 1y ago
Dude fr you’re being dramatic. That’s unsanitary to have partners drinking on the floor. Pretty sure it’s a health code violation too to be eating or drinking on the floor.

If you’re really thirsty and can’t wait till break, just let your ssv know you’re going to get a sip of water for a moment.
daisy-trbl 29 points 1y ago
everyone saying drinking on the floor is unsanitary i have a question for you: how are you drinking???

i get that it’s a health code violation (which i don’t understand because hydration is a necessity) but at my store if you move from your position you’re going to get in trouble and get backed up. we do not have time for people to run to the back to get water. what our partners do is label their water cups and face away from food/drinks to sip.

but essentially every partner at our store has a venti water cup or their own personal bottle.

and what kind of customer complains about people drinking water. we are humans who need water. i’m not about to spend my shift with a dry mouth because karen thinks i’m a robot.

Edit: i just realized i left out a (fair) point which is that right now we have to take our masks off to drink water but before covid baristas would talk while making drinks and food which i would argue is more unsanitary than taking a sip of water.

It is a health code violation in part because if you have been drinking and you spill the drink particularly on any work surface, regardless of how ridiculous it sounds you have potentially contaminated a work surface with your saliva. And to a health inspector that is the same as going around and licking the blenders, or the ice scoops, or the steaming pitchers, or the counters. And considering some illnesses, (viral in particularly) can be transmitted through saliva.... that's the problem.

And while your store may have its own set up or arrangement with partners it is not a company wide mandate making it recognizable to some one who is just passing through and isn't aware. And I swear I'm not attempting to sound snarky, so I apologize if I sound that way.

Also if someone is drinking out of the same types of cups we give the customers, there is the slim possibility in a rush, hurry, or neglected moment at the mobile hand off area (depending on your store's layout) that an employee drink could go to a customer. And then you run into the above issues. And then the company could also be sued for negligence I would guess if a customer believed they received a drink someone else had already drank out of.
daisy-trbl 6 points 1y ago
ohhh that makes so much more sense now. thank you for explaining it. i had never considered the consequences if it were to spill. we’re pretty cautious about where we leave our drinks so not right next to any machines or ice bins. there are designated areas for each position. and it’s by sinks or an area where the spill would be to the floor. we also throw away cups when we finish them or leave and everyone is responsible for theirs.

as for the customer accidentally getting the drink we prevent it from happening by writing everyone’s name on the lid and never leaving cups near the handoff areas.

our store has a set of rules for having any drinks on the floor and we are all required to follow them. the only issue we’ve had is partners forgetting to throw their drinks out before they leave and since all the cups have names we just throw them out.
Seriously_jst_4real 3 points 1y ago
No prob Bob.
😊
And I get ya. They just have to set rules based on the dumbest or least "aware" of us. I've seriously had to stop people from using things that have hit the floor, because they just didn't know. The thought that it wasn't food safe just didn't register.

I only work a couple days a week, this is job 2, but I Wish my crews were as dutiful about throwing their cups away.
Ordinary-Theory-8289 20 points 1y ago
Welcome to food service. You’re gonna have that rule at any establishment it’s beyond Starbucks it’s a health code lol
wldflwrheart 7 points 1y ago
I totally get that it's policy, health code violation, etc. But y'all calling OP dramatic doesn't sit right with me. I will never forget watching a partner drop on a shift I was supervising because she hadn't had the time to step off solo bar and take a drink in literal hours, and she was on hormones at the time. We were a staff of three all morning and it was nonstop customers for hours, no manager help, no mobiles off, nothing. Leaving the floor felt like abandoning each other. It really is like that sometimes.

You should feel like you have the ability to leave the floor and drink. However, so many stores don't create that kind of environment where taking care of yourself is seen as acceptable.
8ultaoreune 7 points 1y ago
listen i totally hear you but this is pretty much standard at any food service job, accidents and spills happen and companies cant risk it. especially now during a pandemic, what if i bumped into another barista and spilled my water, contaminated with my mouth germs, all over the counter? even if youre away from any drinks or food it's still a health and safety regulation because of how easily and quickly things can spread and because they cant really be bending the rules on this kinda thing.

and also this country sucks ass tho with how minimum wage workers are treated we shouldn't have to wait until we're coughing up a lung and limping to the backroom before we can sip some water and sit down lol
stringtherapy321 3 points 1y ago
Exactly! I have a rough prob with kidney stones and need water all the time (everyone should have this right, not just folks with probs), but it’s especially important right now to not drink on the floor.

It doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to have water. It means your shifts and managers need to come up with a solution for you to be able to drink in the back. Like, if the store is that busy, hire someone else? But they need to accommodate for that change instead of just not. Especially if you say something about it.
[deleted] [OP] 7 points 1y ago
That’s always been policy. Might even be health code as well, just walk to the back to drink water
Conflict_Thick 7 points 1y ago
yeah drinking on the floor is not allowed
No-Pearl000 4 points 1y ago
we’re…. not allowed to drink water…? what kind of customer complains about someone drinking water wtf
l0vely_poopface 7 points 1y ago
It's a healthcode violation to consume food or drink in a food preparation area
No-Pearl000 1 points 1y ago
i thought they meant like going into the back my bad
Paprmoon7 2 points 1y ago
I get it’s health code but really I don’t think it’s unsanitary especially compared to the amount of times those lids get touched with bare hands. Easy to drink out of a straw under a mask.
bekalh 2 points 1y ago
personally, i don’t think partners should be drinking on the floor, especially with having to wear masks/covid. i just think it’s a health concern and may be off-putting to customers. i think taking a quick run to grab water is nbd, so hopefully your store is understanding!
ProfessionalRock7940 2 points 1y ago
Food service 101 helloooo.
b99__throwaway 2 points 1y ago
if masks are required in your area (and actually it’s required by the company so you should be wearing it on the floor anyways…) taking it off or pulling it down to take a sip is not necessarily “unsanitary” but definitely not okay on the floor. take a couple seconds to go to the back and take a sip.
AcanthisittaLazy2681 2 points 1y ago
i don’t think you’re being dramatic. it’s extremely dumb somebody complained about a barista drinking WATER. seriously, there isn’t time to run to the back to get a drink everytime you need one. i can understand how it might look weird if a barista was drinking a whole latte on the floor, but water???? fuck the guy who complained fr
reveur_ 1 points 1y ago
my first SM had no problem with drinking on the floor.. they even encouraged us to drink red bull 🤣

U can drink where there’s no customers peaking. Usually where the milk fridges are at
noir_fae 1 points 1y ago
Also it’s not a new rule , it’s been in affect for year …… been around since 2015 at least . and most stores i’ve worked in have a drink station for partners .
coldcatsoup 1 points 1y ago
I just take a sample cup, fill with water, knock it back and immediately throw it away. No surfaces are exposed or touched.
piratedashel 1 points 1y ago
Pretend like we are in a pandemic and then act accordingly.
orangeeelemonnn 1 points 1y ago
Firstly, I made this post in anger when I wasn’t clearly thinking and want to make this one thing clear. I take this pandemic EXTREMELY seriously. I myself have an autoimmune disease so I have to.

What I was referring to in the post was sips of water but I understand that I have articulated that badly. I also would never pull my mask down while on the floor, I use a straw to take small sips of water and then throw it away to make sure I don’t collapse (because I will if i don’t stay hydrated because of my disease).

I’m sorry for coming off like a covid denier or something but i’ve worked at my store for 3 years now and am just getting frustrated by many decisions they’ve made. And for stone reason this pushed me over the edge a little. I’m sorry
the1noir 1 points 1y ago
No food industry allows you to eat or drink on the floor. It’s unsanitary. Imagine someone making your drink or food item while slobbering over a drink. Nastyyyy. Go to the back room to drink water or something, they can’t stop you from doing that.
National-Chance2406 1 points 1y ago
it’s fine to keep the drinks in the back. i mean keeping it upfront is not
professional , and could accidentally be handed out to a customer idk it’s just not a food and drink safety thing. so this ain’t something to complain ab
cynicallyspoken 1 points 1y ago
Reading stuff like this always makes me appreciate working in a proudly serve cafe instead of a straight up Starbucks cafe. Not that we drink on the floor, but if someone took a sip of water, no one would be on them for it. And the day would continue on. But that’s also keeping in mind the fact that there are store employees from the main part of the store who also enter the cafe to grab themselves water.
britttonnn 1 points 1y ago
It’s policy and it looks completely unprofessional tbh. In my opinion. The way my store manager puts it is, it’s like a road-trip, you get a break (or should) every two hours. That gives you plenty of time to hydrate before your shift, during your shift, and after your shift as well as going to the bathroom if you need. Otherwise you should be on the floor with all your attention put to your job because well that’s how it should be, you’re on the clock. Obviously no one is going to make you piss yourself on the floor or if you’re thirsty and it’s not busy go to the back. Usually going to the back though involves… drinking water, checking your phone, getting side tracked etc… We’re allowed little pup cups of water if someone is like really desperate
