Should we cover when customers are short change?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by squishezzz
I had someone come through drive and was short about 10 cents, asked if I could cover the change. I said no and they immediately got an attitude with me. If a customer is short a small amount are we supposed to take money out of the tips or something? Lol my thought was absolutely not, but telling this story to a few people I get mixed reactions. What would you do? Maybe if the customer is being super polite and not EXPECTING us to cover the change? Idk let me know your thoughts

i’ve never covered change for someone, even when they ask. the tips are for partners, not customers! you did the right thing

Thank you! I'm still a green bean so just wanted to check what's right in this situation. Even though it was a small amount it didn't feel right taking it from tips so I'm glad I didn't...hate when customers get mad that THEY don't have enough and it's my problem 🙃🤣

Nope, also you could actually be fired for taking money out of the tip jar. Baristas are underpaid, unless the customer is homeless or something along those lines I have no sympathy
Ok-Mix-512932 points1y ago
Never ever ever touch tip money under any circumstance
lilgian126 points1y ago
Nope! It’s not my responsibility to make sure clients come with enough money! When I go places I don’t buy items if I don’t have enough money for them. Imagine if I went to Walmart and at the cash said “hey, I’m missing some money so you will pay the difference for me right?” I would look crazy!

Yeah. These people do this there, too.

My manager encouraged us at the drive through window to do this. Not to cover from the tips, but just put it through. A bit of variance is nothing compared to 1 seconds less during peak times 🤪🤪🤪 same at like, target when I worked there. They kept referring to it as the "ability to make the moment right" and as long as it wasn't like 20 bucks short it's fine
clumsycalico17 points1y ago
Yeah I’m gonna be honest if it’s like less than 50 cents that’s exactly what I do. Probably not if they asked though because that’s whack and entitled.

Exactly. We’re talking about .10 not dalla dalla bills, yo.

if they hadn't asked, I probably would've just had the drawer be a little short, or since we're ~technically~ not allowed to accept tips at my license store, we usually have a pile of change sitting on the register I'll pull from. but if they specifically ask, 9 times out of 10 I'll say no. there's a few circumstances I will still, like if it's a regular, a kid, or they caused a *something LGBT just happened to me* moment, but otherwise they can fuck right off
Ordinary-Theory-82897 points1y ago
A what moment?
vaselinecult6 points1y ago
a gay moment
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points1y ago
Yea wtf is that supposed to mean lol

No not okay. And if you would have, very much like a toddler, theyd think its okay and youd just encourage this behavior. Expecting free stuff maybe next time theyre short $3 and so on. This is how entitled customers are cultivated. So glad you said no. Seriously what establishment have they ever gone to that this would fly
squishezzz [OP]3 points1y ago
Thank you, that's exactly what I was thinking. Like if I did this for one car I'd be setting the standard of potentially doing it for everyone else who is short.

Depends on the situation. If the customer’s acting entitled to it, absolutely not. But the other day, I had a lady who first tried to pay with EBT (I didn’t realize it was an EBT card until the payment didn’t go through). She had enough cash to cover the dollar the amount, and she was trying to pay the rest on a visa gift card. First, it declined, I think because she got the pin wrong. So I tried running it again, but this time bypassing the pin. It still didn’t work. At that point, I just decided to cover the change cause I happened to have it on me and she seemed nice
squishezzz [OP]4 points1y ago
Yeah in that situation I probably would have done a right now recovery or something, especially if the customer was nice. I just didn't like the entitlement of this customer and she could have paid with card instead of cash but just chose to have me take something off her order

You never take money from the tip jar. You don’t even do it to “give change.” If they only have a $10 and only want to tip us $1, the money needs to be exchanged from the drawer or tell them thank you but I can’t do that.
It looks like your are stealing tip money on the camera, so don’t touch the tips. Not even for a cent.
In this case, the customer was being annoying and entitled, but you’d just have the drawer be short a few cents or you can recovery something and take the cash for the rest of the payment. If they are super obnoxious I may ask them what they would like to take off their order. They usually magically produce their card or some change.

Fuck no. Don't come to Starbucks if you don't have money for your drink. I'm not giving your entitled ass my tips.
[deleted]3 points1y ago
fuck starbucks customer service policy of making every situation right, just let the drawer be under 10 cents
flamingavocados2 points1y ago
I had a lady ask if she could exchange money from the tip jar. Her 5 in change for a series of 1 dollar bills. It was such an odd request and I told her it was against policy to touch the tip jar and gave her the original change
Another lady grabbed money straight from the tip jar and demanded to pay with it 😭
squishezzz [OP]1 points1y ago
Omg that's horrible, I can't believe the audacity of these people
BREAKDOWN-MAMI2 points1y ago
customers give me so much attitude when i ask them for change and their short, YOU ORDERED THIS NOT ME?????
jazzysoranio2 points1y ago
The tips don’t belong to you, they belong to everyone, so you’d be taking other people’s money without permission.
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
I charge them a smaller size when they’re nice
eckinz1 points1y ago
Of course we aren't supposed to!
Although, if it's a regular that I've built rapport with and it's an insignificant amount like a few pennies or something, Ill usually cover it because I have endless amounts of change that just sits in my car haha
purseEffphony1 points1y ago
Tell the customer they are all set print the reciept and let the MOD /sSv know what happened so they can void the transaction. Aanother thing is to just void the payment and do a right now recovery. Sometimes thats just easier for the $0.10
Overall-Diver-6845-2 points1y ago
If I had a dime on me, I totally would. Why not help someone? It’s not like $2 they’re asking for. And if they needed it, and I had it, I would.
It’s good karma. If I didn’t have it, that’s a different situation.
