Coffee brew cycle question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by grumpysleepyhedgehog
Hi, I'm a new partner. Can someone go over the coffee brew timers for me? I feel dumb, but the numbers just aren't clicking for me.

* 4 coffees = 8 minutes
* 3 coffees = 10 minutes
* 2 coffees = 15 minutes
* 1 coffee = 30 minutes

When they say 3 coffees...what exactly does that mean? 3 types of coffee in use? Why is the timer longer for fewer coffees?

The idea is to cycle the coffee brewing in a way that allows you to dump “old” coffee every 30 minutes. So if you have blonde, Pike, and dark brewing (3 coffees), you’ll set the timer for 10 minutes and when it goes off, you’ll dump and brew the oldest batch.

Say blonde is the oldest and you have 3 types of coffee. You’ll grind and brew blonde, dump the old blonde, then set the timer for 10 minutes. When the timer goes off, you’ll grind and brew Pike, dump the old Pike, and set the timer. When the timer goes off again, you’ll grind and brew dark, dump the old dark, then set the timer and repeat, starting with blonde again.

If you just have Pike available, you can set the timer for 30 minutes and just grind, brew, and dump Pike every 30 minutes.

You can see that in the first scenario, with all 3 roasts, you’re always dumping each type of coffee every 30 minutes, it’s just staggered so you only have to do one at a time.

That makes a lot more sense, thanks!

My understanding was that if there’s only one coffee brewing it’s likely slower but when you have three coffees on it’s likely during a busy time where we’re able to run out quickly. Therefore the coffees should be checked more frequently to see if you need to brew more. (This is the way I interpreted it, not sure if my assumption is right tho 😅)
