Hello , I work at a licensed store located inside a college campus I won’t name which college campus because I don’t want any negative consequences from posting this but so feel everyone should know . My licensed store is managed by another company: Chartwells under compass group this semester has brought a lot of injustices. First partners at my location only get paid $8.50/hr and get promoted to $9.00/hr once they pass their barista certification which takes 4 months to process. Partners who I’ve known have worked at this location for 3+ years and the highest they’ve gotten paid is $9.75/hr in the summer they hired new baristas for 10.00 so of course partners spoke out about it. These partners were threatened with termination if they continued to speak about this. Another Starbucks location in this same campus experienced a walkout because of the working conditions : no A.C, and since it’s the library that store is always busy with lines that go out the door constantly. So clearly partners had enough our school newspaper made a story with accounts from baristas who decided to tell about everything that was going on. Chartwells response was to sponsor a PR event from 11:00pm-midnight featuring free tall Iced coffee, free pike , free hot chocolate and free shaken teas for students during finals. Of course we had more than 600+ students show up as you can imagine it was hell with only 6 baristas and the people handing out drinks were the schools cheerleaders at the end the media department took pictures of us and the cheerleaders but to our surprise there was no recognition to us they even had the audacity to write “ Special thanks to our yell leaders for serving coffee to students during finals”. Not to mention everyone on our staff are students who many of us had 8:00am exams we all got out at 2:00am since we had to clean and restock for the following day. Also Chartwells has decided to only schedule baristas for 4.5 hours so they don’t have to give them breaks since we have a 5hr break policy. All of this happens to other food service workers from other restaurants in our campus like chick fil a, papa Johns etc and not just Starbucks.
