Okay this is not about people calling out, but about management literally having no contingency plan for multiple call outs. Today we are down 4 partners but still being forced to operate at all levels of mobile and drive thru and everything. We can’t even take our breaks. At what point do managers realize, hey this might be too much on the partners? But no, I’m told every time we can’t turn off mobile because mobile produces the most sales.
So sick of this.
Popperz4Brekkie92 points1y ago
As a store manager of 8 years, I can confirm you have a bad manager. Mobiles need to be turned off (if you turn off front register 2, mobile ordering will be disabled.) Breaks are even more important when you all are working so hard, beyond capacity. It’s wrong to treat the partners poorly for actually showing up to their shift and putting in all the hard work. Im sorry my friend.
cuterobots16 points1y ago
We had a problem with the company that runs the mobile orders, it was impossible to turn them off so we turned everything off in MOP availability. We were running 3 partner plays but I would only do this as a last resort though (with communication to your manager).
Popperz4Brekkie2 points1y ago
Nowadays it’s the DM you need to notify. SMs just take the blame and have no power or authority these days. It’s the DM who can turn off your mobile orders. Imagine a world where a store manager can run their own store. Sad times at sbux now with castrated store managers and benevolent district managers.
philosopher_cat_lady15 points1y ago
Definitely. Mobiles are the first thing to go when the store is too short-staffed to function properly. Four partners down? Of course turn off mobile. Also, that is a great hack at turning them off!
astivana15 points1y ago
I don’t believe it works anymore.
victorious_gem10 points1y ago
turning off reg 2 no longer the method of stopping mop (another shift && I found that out the hard way, when we closed early on labor day last yr. it was really annoying lolz 🙄) managers have to send like an email to a specific department or the DM to turn it off now. so I feel like their hesitant to message the Dm bc they don't wanna look bad, but you know what else looks bad: A dt line wrapped around the building && the only other partners running around like chicken's with their heads cut off
Popperz4Brekkie2 points1y ago
Wow. That’s insane they took away that ability in store. Sounds like sbux. It’s all about the DMs ‘running stores’ because they know what’s best while they work from home. Wow, I hate this company so much now.
ofmyselfthankyou80 points1y ago
I would still give breaks. The customers can eat my ass. I do not care if they wait 30 minutes in the drive thru…I’m still giving my partners their breaks. If they don’t like it, tell them to ask management why they can’t come up with a better plan.
Edit: Saying this because I’m assuming you’ve already contacted other locations for help, received none, and despite that are still being forced to keep all operations up and running. You should grab a stack of your manager’s and DM’s cards and tell every angry customer who they can contact if they’re unhappy. (Assuming your store phone number is the one on the managers card, let people know which day they should call!) I mean, you two basically have a common enemy here. Play it up. Let the angry customers know that you’re equally disappointed in management for doing this to both them and you.
TheFriendlyFeminist [OP]14 points1y ago
Wish you were my shift
cinnamonmarigold17 points1y ago
Same. When I was a shift, my barista’s breaks were the no. 1 priority. If they were getting too stressed, I’d would mark all the mobile items unavailable. Fuck managers and DMs who put you all through that sort of stuff. Bc when you get behind, customers get more angry, too. Y’all deserve better.
ofmyselfthankyou7 points1y ago
The not so funny thing about it is that a lot of people in management positions can’t even do the jobs under normal circumstances that they’re asking us to do under unreasonable conditions like this.
And if things are that bad, my baristas need their breaks even more than they do on a normal day. They’re paying us to do a job, not to be tortured or to suffer.
philosopher_cat_lady6 points1y ago
This is precisely why unions are necessary. I appreciate your sentiment that our job is supposed to have reasonable demands. Right now I'm getting so overworked I developed a cold sore at work, developed a urinary tract infection, and have a sore throat I'm assuming from taking so many orders.
philosopher_cat_lady4 points1y ago
Man, that's a good hack. Corporate in this company is laughably greedy. Our old DM told us not to convert to drive-thru only unless only two partners were on the floor. At my current store, my store director doesn't even bother to contact my DM to ask for permission to close the store early when I'm working an entire shift by myself and closing the store.
sheep_heavenly13 points1y ago
>You should grab a stack of your manager’s and DM’s cards and tell every angry customer who they can contact if they’re unhappy.
This is my favorite move. It works so well.
philosopher_cat_lady3 points1y ago
You're right, it's enticing to Karens who "want to speak to your manager." If a Karen ever tells me that, I'm going to truthfully say, "I don't have one."
philosopher_cat_lady11 points1y ago
I've gone so many times without taking a break due to short-staffing. And now that I work at Target, breaks are imaginary.
Do not make things easy on the customer if they have a problem caused by short staffing. Do not give them recovery cards. Make the customer feel discomfort so they can complain to Starbucks about how short-staffed they keep their stores. Make the customer want to not come back. That is the only way Starbucks will want to make their staffs bigger and better. I had a customer yesterday ask me for a discount since her wait in line was long. I refused.
Also, very much yes to your "the customers can eat my ass." I get told by my store director, "The guests come first." A customer even told it to me when I wanted to use the restroom. That is absolute bullshit. Employees \*always\* come first.
ofmyselfthankyou6 points1y ago
Also, with the whole “guests come first” thing…no. That’s just how you end up with angry employees who won’t give a shit about the job because they know you don’t give a shit about them. Take care of your employees and make your store a decent place to work in and the employees will be happy to take care of your business.
philosopher_cat_lady2 points1y ago
You end up with a high turnover rate.
ofmyselfthankyou3 points1y ago
I’ve worked at Target before. They really are terrible about breaks. You should look up the laws in your state about breaks and make sure they’re at least functioning within the law. If not, I’d remind them of what the law is and report them if they don’t adjust accordingly. I’ve had jobs try to force us to skip breaks before…I just make sure to complain relentlessly about needing to go to the restroom, then go take an extra long shit.
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
Good idea, but from what I hear the only break that's legally mandated in my state is a meal break at six hours, and my store is really gung-ho about us taking that one.
ofmyselfthankyou2 points1y ago
Have you considered reporting them to someone higher up in the Target corporation?
JugglesTheKlown14 points1y ago
Sitting in my car for my first break since open at 430am.
3 calls offs. SM refuses to turn off delivery and mobiles. There are only 6 of us in a drive-thru heavy volume store. It's madness. I also have an ongoing injury that I'm supposed to ice every 1.5hours according to Worker's comp. Fat chance.
sheep_heavenly16 points1y ago
Please do your injury treatments. It can develop into lifelong issues if not taken care of. Pester your DM and explicitly mention your workers comp situation. That's such bullshit of your manager to not help you guys.
philosopher_cat_lady12 points1y ago
Just lie and say you're sick too. They can't ask for proof and they likely won't even fire you unless you do it a billion times. I had a coworker call out all the fucking time and he didn't get fired for it until two years later.
Here's the thing about this stupid company. Yeah, maybe mobiles produce sales but not when you've got to wait thirty+ minutes for your mobile after arriving at the store. You probably already waited ten or fifteen minutes since placing it. Customers are gonna wisen up and realize mobiles are a terrible way to place your order. I mean, some managers tell us to ignore mobiles to keep drive-thru times down. That literally defeats the purpose of placing a mobile order.
As for management's cluelessness, I really don't know if they're going to realize that working partners this hard is not only unfair but pushes them out the door. I work at a Target. One of my trainers quit on the spot the other day because we're so short-staffed we cannot complete our basic tasks, such as making mocha and whipped cream. We also have not had a manager for four months because our previous one quit without notice. My trainer was a barista who cared about her job. She burst into tears while at work, said she couldn't do this anymore, and quit without notice.
fuckthisshit____7 points1y ago
My store manager would turn off mobiles and/or close the lobby and go drive thru only, but only if things got *really bad*. I think the SM gets penalized if they don’t meet their profit goals for the week or something
Dr3am_B0i3 points1y ago
we just had a really shitty schedule today and i had multiple shifts talking about me because i wanted to take my last 10 even though i took my lunch 6 hours into my 8 hour shift, like ive been working my ass off all day, im tired, i just want to sit down for a bit, but i still got side eyed because of it.
purseEffphony2 points1y ago
If its your 30 min lunch (clock out) that may be mandated by your state and could be illegal for them not to give it to you.
far_outtahere3 points1y ago
No mandates on lunches in my state until you've worked 12 hours, but I believe it is still company policy to take those breaks.
Puzzleheaded-Ice-8821 points1y ago
I’m… very late but…. At our store I have limited hours due to labor shortage, this is ridiculous. When can the managers be better at THEIR jobs and hiring? We have too many people who aren’t properly trained. You don’t have enough people to cover everything so like- when does this end? I hope it got better
