ASM is more of a transitional role than a firm one. If you’re an ASM you are basically shadowing the SM plus some extra training. It’s not a permanent position and is given to those who will eventually be a SM, and I think it’s only a 6 month duration. So just think of it as a SM in training!

Usually (at least in my area) an ASM will train in a store with a manager trainer that lasts a minimum
four weeks to complete the SM training. Then they “roast” for anywhere to 6-12 months to practice/learn the job, shadowing another SM as the previous replies said, so they can be prepared to take over their own store. Usually for the roasting time they’ll be sent to a higher volume store that can afford to support to salaried partners. So some stores tend to have an ASM more often since they are higher volume, however it’s not a permanent role.
