Pay it Forward Trains at the DTW (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by purseEffphony
A screenshot of a post about Tipping has been making the local to me social media rounds and although it gives me some easure to be able to tell someone that their order has been paid for by someone else a lot of times they feel like they should continue the "goodwill" (hence the "train"). Inevitably someone who ordered a $3 coffee ends up wincing when theboffer tonpay for the next person who has $45 in beverages and food but at this point they are "committed" and I cant tell them the total of the next order until theirs has cleared.

I dont want anyone to feel "obligated" if its beyond their means - what could I say in the moment without making them feel bad about not following though?

I was thinking something like "oh their order is prepaid via the app and so are the next few after that maybe next time? have a great day!"

i started saying the car behind them is a mobile order pickup & if they ask about the car behind that, i just say unfortunately there’s no way for me to skip a car/order once it’s put in the system. works like a charm lol

I never suggest paying for the next one unless they bring it up, and in case like this, I'd probably say "oh the next car had a HUGE order" and hope that appeases them. And then if they keep asking I'll ask if they're sure, remind them they really have no obligation to, etc. But if they're determined, I'll let them do it. A lot of those people are so rich that 40 bucks means nothing. Would be nice if they'd give it to the baristas busting ass to try to make ends meet instead of the rich teenagers getting tiktok drinks in the next car, but having what could have been a huge tip dangled in front of me only to go to another entitled customer instead doesn't even make the top ten list of things we put up with these days.

To be clear - I never suggest it either and judging by the cars that pass through our drive through most of these people are not super rich paasing it along to other rich people..
