when am i able to apply for benefits?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by leeblissy
hi starbesties, this whole benefits thing is so confusing for me so I'm taking it here, i need my hand held lol

I'm based on the US, and I have another sbux barista friend located in CAN (worked there for years and has applied for shift multiple times) who told me that the benefits application window is ONLY open in august, and ONLY if you've reached your hourly quota.

is that the case in the US? why is it such a restricted window? it feels like they're trying to make it as difficult as possible to apply. wouldn't it make more sense for the employees AND those who have to process these applications to have it at least open once a month or something so not every single person who needs insurance are applying at once?

also, in case it's relevant: I started in august so kinda stings that I might have to wait a whole year into my job in order to even apply for benefits :/ that's the whole reason I picked sbux in the first place lol

$1

As a new hire you become eligible for benefits once you receive 240 hours of pay over 3 full consecutive months, which you'll get by working 20 hours per week. Once you're eligible, Starbucks will send you a letter in the mail giving you a deadline by which you have to enroll. What matters is when you get paid, not when you work. So the hours you worked at the end of November, for instance, would count for December because that's when you'd get your paycheck.

Hypothetically, you might earn enough hours to qualify over October, November, and December. You'd be able to enroll in insurance in January and your coverage would start in February.

You can check your progress by looking at the "BEN/LOA Hours" line on your pay stubs or by calling the benefits center at 877-728-9236.

Three months for insurance, etc. Some of the other benefits like 401k and pto don't start til later.

It’s pretty standard that there’s only a month window in which you can make changes to your benefits. It’s been like that at every job I’ve ever worked, and I’ve never heard of someone who doesn’t have to wait for an open enrollment period to apply for their benefits.

that’s the national open enrollment period if i’m not mistaken and it’s usually like that

Yeah you can typically only change benefits options during open enrollment or major life changes(I.e. you get married/have children) or the initial enrollment when you first become eligible. In the case of Starbucks that’s after working 240 hours over a 3 month period
