hi just your friendly reminder to ✨ ask ✨ if someone wants whip on their drink if they get nondairy (if the drink normally gets whip, i.e a white mocha)(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by BatWeary
i have pulled countless stickers today for soy mochas, oatmilk caramel brûlée lattes, almond milk white mochas and not a single one would say ‘no whip’ or ‘add whip’. i’m so tired of having to walk away from bar to ask the barista who took the order if they want whip. 9/10 times they tell me they didn’t ask. some people still want whip on their drink made with nondairy, and don’t specify bc they assume we’ll add it. or forget. it just makes my job slightly easier

I know right! I say that all the time and I always get a “well, it’s the customer’s job to tell ‘em what they want.” And yes, that’s correct. But WE’RE the ones who suffer if it’s wrong and has to be remade. By refusing to ask a three-second question they’re opening up so many doors for things to go wrong and cause so many headaches when we have to remake stuff and the line gets backed up and now all the customers behind them will be even crankier, which also increases the chance for even more mistakes to be made. Like, yeah, the customer SHOULD tell us what they want without you having to ask, but that’s no reason to punish yourself with extra work. It’s like how, yes, the pedestrian has the right of way, but that doesn’t mean I just jump out into traffic like I’m invincible.

exactly!!! i’ve just stopped putting whip on those drinks unless it’s clarified on the sticker. i don’t have time to waste chasing down customers and fellow baristas over whip lol. it’s easier to add it in after the fact than remake the whole drink bc it melted and they can’t do dairy
Binx_da_gay_cat3 points1y ago
Our store does the "add whip unless otherwise specified" because we do ask, so a no would be otherwise noted. We have people coming and getting alternative milks but "Please keep the whip" so much that we always do whip.
jazzysoranio2 points1y ago
That’s exactly how it should be. But it only works if everyone is onboard with making sure to check. If some partners aren’t asking and are just assuming you end up having to remake a lot of drinks because they won’t take two seconds to just make sure first.
BatWeary [OP]1 points1y ago
that’s what i used to do, but i moved stores and a lot of the customers here don’t like whip so i’ve just resorted to “no whip unless otherwise”

It’s actually standard to not add whip to any drink made with a dairy alternative.

Receipts?

I just leave it off if it’s non-dairy. If they want whip, it’s easier to add it than to take it off.

An not abundantly well known fact- if you remove the whip from a drink on POS and then add it back, it will then print “add whip” on the sticker and make everyone’s lives easier.

i feel like a lot of people don’t know this! i always see “w/ whip” typed in on the sticker as an ask me
myredditusername9195 points1y ago
yeah but white mocha has dairy
BatWeary [OP]4 points1y ago
some people can handle the white mocha sauce in a nondairy drink better than in a drink with dairy
myredditusername9191 points1y ago
yeah but whip cream is probably about equal dairy to the dairy in the sauce
BatWeary [OP]6 points1y ago
this is true. but some people can handle more dairy than others. i can drink a white mocha with oatmilk and whip and be totally fine, but if i drink a regular latte with 2% it’s game over
myredditusername9195 points1y ago
yeah i understand that, i am saying if it is a serious allergy and not an intolerance they should/would not order white mocha (unless they didn’t know it had dairy which many don’t) or whip. here is an example of what i mean customer (c): can i get a venti white mocha with oat milk? me (m): sure, do you want whip? c: yes i do
in this scenario i would not warn them about the white mocha because they are okay with the dairy in the whip. as opposed to:
c: can i get a wm with oat milk? m: want whip? c: no thank you m: okay, just so you know what wm sauce has dairy, is that okay?

If I'm on register I ALWAYS ask if they want whip. If they do I ALWAYS put add whip just so it's absolutely clear. I agree when I'm on bar I'm always asking my coworker or looking for the customer to find out and it's a pain. Personally, as a vegan I absolutely agree that it's on the customer to specify what they want and to ask questions about dairy, etc . however, they often need some prompting and it's so much easier to just ask. This also applies to whether a drink is hot or iced. I literally ask every single customer if they wanted that drink hot because I'm tired of motherfucker not specifying and having to remake drinks. It's worth the extra few seconds to just ask
CLEf112 points1y ago
I always ask and i will put no whip if they say no whip so if it doesn't say no whip then they want it
venturealoha2 points1y ago
Eh. I sort of agree, we should be asking those questions but the customer should really specify. I just make whatever is on the sticker.

I work at a licensed store location so we have to write out everything by hand and very often some baristas on register won’t ever ask and I have to find the customer over the counter and ask them myself. Sometimes I’ll even ask on dairy drinks and they’re like “oh no one’s ever asked me that before, yeah I’d actually like it without whip please.”
Because it’s a licensed store obviously I have the time most days to ask this, but when it gets really busy (line out the door kind of deal) then it’s a huge pain.

Also a reminder to called it whipped cream and not whipped topping. Since whipped topping is usually made from sweetened whipped oils it doesn’t contain dairy so a lot of people think it’s safe when called whipped topping. Whipped cream should help clarify that it contains dairy. However when in doubt, don’t be afraid to clarify. It’s better safe than sorry.
BatWeary [OP]1 points1y ago
i always call it whipped cream and people will still assume it’s dairy free 🤦♀️
Markedsoultheif1 points1y ago
Yeah I hate that too. Which is why I’ve started encouraging people to let them know about the dairy. It’s better safe than sorry.

Asking people if they want whip might as well become a personality trait for me at this point. I’ll sometimes catch myself asking “do you still want the whip cream on that?” after someone orders a bacon gouda or something 😩
bigjilmmmm1 points1y ago
yep and for anyone that doesn’t know (just learned this myself) you can make the sticker say “add whip” by hitting no whip and hitting the whip button again. it’s quicker and easier than typing it all out in the ask me section
paigemclachlan0 points1y ago
Half the time they do ask but it’s not on the sticker so I have to ask anyway 😭 like why do you want ME to remember, I have 10million other drinks
