Training (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by NervosaNervous
I had this Barista at a license store argue with me about how my drink was made. I ordered a blonde chestnut praline latte with white mocha and made w/ oat milk. I then watched her put half oat milk and half cream in my latte. She said that’s the way it’s supposed to be done. They were slammed (it’s a mallBux), so I didn’t want to hold them up anymore, but nowhere on the cup does it say to add cream.

As a barista myself, I just let it go because I know how stressful it can be. But why is the training so inconsistent? And this isn’t just licensed stores I’ve had a problem with. Hell, sometimes even people at my own store don’t make my drink correctly. I’ve worked many places, but Starbucks by far has the most inconsistent training I’ve ever experienced.

Bigger issue. Someone request oatmilk be of a severe diary allergy and she put cream in them.

I started last week, and there is a ridiculous amount of information to take in. The training was about 20 hours total and consisted of the online training and some hands on. To me, it felt like a quick rundown of the different positions and how the store operates. I feel grossly unprepared for any of the roles in the store, except maybe CS. I'm studying drink names and recipes on my own time - this week is my first "by myself" work week, and I'm quite nervous.

As someone who used to work in a mall Tarbucks, we (the baristas/Starbucks team) always had to fight with the target managers to give new baristas proper time to train.

Everyone is supposed to get 2 weeks of training, but they were famous for wanting everyone fully trained within 3 days 'because its not that hard' but those same managers also refused to learn how to run the Starbucks whenever they left us understaffed (scheduling 1 barista per shift on a SATURDAY then wondering why the line is going into the mall and why the lone Barista has not taken their break) despite it being policy that the food manager is able to cover.

Sorry, dumb rant, glad i got out of there ( even though i loved the starbucks team to bits, but we still all talk).

While that explains the poor training, that doesn't excuse the VERY obvious mix of using dairy when a you ask for a non-dairy milk. I hope they don't send someone to the hospital, or worse gets someone killed, because they can't figure out why someone would ask for non-dairy milk.

The training is super inconsistent. I’m a fairly new partner (about 3-4 months) and transferred locations 2 months in. The difference in the training between the two stores was super noticeable!

I hate that people treat it like a tea, when it’s clearly a very sugary juice beverage.

It’s one thing to not be trained properly but this… isn’t that common sense?

That's insane
