Should I be a shift? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Electrical_Newt_1426
I have the opportunity to become a ssv at my store and I’m unsure if I want the added responsibilities. My store is very well run, I have an incredible store manager, so I know she is in my corner. I just love being on bar so much, that’s pretty much all I do. I would be sad to lose that. What do you guys think? I could really use the money, that’s for sure.

I’ve been an SSV for about a year and love it. I think the day goes by faster because you’re focusing on so many different things. And having a supportive manager does make a huge difference in how enjoyable the experience will be. As far as bar time goes you should still be able to do that unless your manager doesn’t allow shifts to be in bar. I’ve worked in a few locations and some managers have said shifts should never put themselves on bar while other allowed it so it would depend on your managers preferences. If you need the money definitely go for it. It’s nice having a little bit extra in my account every two weeks.

It’s definitely not that shifts can’t be on bar at my store, but I never really see my shifts be on bar if they don’t have to be. Makes sense so that they can have an eye on things and be able to stop and handle issues.

all of this but also there will be (unless your store is low on SSVs) shifts where you’re just coverage and so basically a barista, and you can ask your fellow shifts for bar time if they can accommodate that for you

Honestly I would go for it. It might be a bit more stress occasionally but in my opinion the extra pay is worth it. I have never regretted becoming a shift, and I’m going on year 4 as one.
