Do you make your drinks on your days off?(self.starbucksbaristas)

At the Starbucks that you personally work at, do you ever go in when it’s not your shift and make your own drink and/or food? I ask because I have a partner who gets dropped off hours before her shift starts and she comes behind the bar, makes her drink, and then sits down in the cafe on her computer for 2-3 hours before she actually clocks in. Is this a thing? My other partners never seem to mind or say anything, same with my SM. The drinks I like are typically on the complicated side and I only ever get them when I’m the one able to make them because I know how much of an annoyance it would be for my coworkers to have to make. For added clarification, at my location, we also are expected to make our own drinks and food for our 10’s and halves. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of my partners actually order a drink unless if they came with their friends on a day off. I’d love to be able to go in on one of my days off, make my drink, and then leave. It seems like it wouldn’t be something that’s allowed, but I wanted to make sure. Do any of you do this?

Short answer: no, this wouldn’t be allowed. It’s actually against policy to ring up & make our own drinks. Even on our breaks, we’re supposed to wait in line like a customer and then wait for our food/drink. That being said, a lot of SMs are chill with this rule and don’t mind if you make your own drink before heading off on your break. I’m surprised nobody objects to your coworker coming behind bar to make her drink off the clock, but maybe they’re more lenient because it’s before her shift starts. I can’t imagine anyone being allowed to come in on their day off just to make their drink and leave. I can think of so many policy & health code violations this would cause. But I guess if your store is already allowing this then you have your answer.

I remember when I first learned that some baristas had to wait in line and I was shocked. I’ve never had to do that at my store. And yeah, I’m surprised too. And it feels like it’s always when we’re busy too. She gets in the way and no one says anything. So I just assumed that it’s okay. I guess I’ll stick to only getting my drinks on days that I’m working. No way I’ll order on a day off. I’d probably cause a long line behind me. 😂

the reasoning behind this not being allowed is if you are off the clock and get injured behind the bar, starbucks workers comp won’t cover you and they don’t want a lawsuit. it’s really for you protection. now with covid it adds an extra layer of complications due to exposures and isolations.

no. hell no. this is against health code, against policy, and is a massive liability for the company.
also a horrible idea for your own safety. imagine if you slipped and broke your finger while you were making your drink on your day off. You're not eligible for worker's comp in that situation because you weren't at work at the time.

no, that sounds like a massive health code violation though unless they’re washing their hands and putting their apron on.

If we work in >20 minutes we make our own otherwise they go to the register as a customer but still use numbers
