how worth it is it to quit and not look back? a grande rant (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ttsukihime
i’m extremely fed up with my current SM, she’s never around in the store and only knows half of what’s going on. mind you, we’re an interstate store that is new and very busy. if we’re slammed and understaffed she still just leaves and says “good luck”!
i was sick in the back, shaking and crying and told her i felt like i was going to pass out and she just went “you’re not allowed to pass out hah”
i just got accepted into ASU and i’m ready to ask her if i can transfer and if she says no then i’ll just give her my two weeks. it just sucks though :/

Pretty worth it the community can be fun but don't forget this is a low paying food service job. You'll lose absolutely fuck all if you never look back except maybe the opportunity to cry in the back

Union yes
throwRA-aaaaaa 9 points 1y ago
My store threatened to unionize a while ago and one of the partners alerted the DM, in less than a week we had the DMs boss, and their boss in the store and our SM was axed.

All the more reason
throwRA-aaaaaa 1 points 1y ago
Yup! Our former SM was super toxic
pranasoup 39 points 1y ago
just remember- she has a boss too *wink wink*
Necessary_Low939 16 points 1y ago
The last sm I reported got me fired for reporting. So where is this boss really.
pranasoup 28 points 1y ago
“Starbucks does not tolerate retaliation against or the victimization of any partner who raises concerns or questions regarding a potential violation of the Standards of Business Conduct or any Starbucks policy that he or she reasonably believes to have occurred.” everyone’s boss has a boss. there is always someone, and when in doubt- call PCC.
Necessary_Low939 16 points 1y ago
I called many times. She finally got fired in 2019 but that’s after three years I left. She didn’t do it to me first. She got rid of people that went against her and for a very good reason because she’s wrong in most things. And I guess in the end the store saw a pattern and fired her.
pranasoup 5 points 1y ago
that really sucks, i’m so sorry. i wish we were paid enough to address these matters legally. which i guess is where unions come in to play- but again, getting there is a whole thing in itself too.

This whole thing is bullshit right now. I reported my SM to ethics and partner resources for not following food safety and sanitation protocols, and for showing favoritism towards the morning crew and not holding them accountable for things. Gave a million examples and specifics and did everything I was supposed to do. They dragged it out for a fucking month and it was really getting to me. And you know what I got? My DM turning everything back around on me because I got stressed and emotional and she saw a weak opening to exploit and she and my SM conspired to get me fired by writing me up for shit that happened a month and a half prior (me closing cafe because we were severely understaffed and intensely overwhelmed and I made the decision after I couldn't get in contact with my SM), and claiming that partners didn't like my 'tone' and that I apparently would stand too close to them (which is silly because it's fucking Starbucks, our work areas are always way too cramped).

I can easily say that anyone in that company who is a salaried employee is trying to get rid of any possible dissenters or whiffs of unionization. It didn't occur to me when I had my issue but mine was happening right around when the Buffalo stores were starting to try to unionize... and I was raising questions and concerns 🙃

Starbucks is a fast-food job with a bowtie. The sooner good partners realize that the better. I was strung along for 2 years with a promise to be promoted. it was always "in 3 months you have a DM interview, 6 months action plan etc etc" I finally had enough, got a job that paid double and wanted to transfer, miraculously my DM was willing to promote me 'Next month' if I stayed. Fuck that. Life is too short to not move jobs, take risks, and tell shitty managers to fuck off. At the end of the day, this is a minimum wage job, it's not the end of the world.
xoMisaa 11 points 1y ago
honestly it’s worth quitting if you aren’t using any of the benefits! if you are, i suggest talking to other baristas at other stores and get their opinions on their SM’s and probably transfer! if she says no then talk to your DM!

edit: i see you’re using the ASU benefit!! definitely talk to both your SM and DM ab transferring and find a store that needs staffing with a *better* SM!

I quit sbux and went to work as a night shift janitor, best job ever, little to no stress and I get to work by myself.
geminitinkerbelle 4 points 1y ago
I hate when managers are like this. She is not manager material and is not a leader. A lot of managers mistreat their employees bc they have not had to work hard to get where they are. She faked her way there. You need to put her in her spot and stand up for yourself and then quit without her notice or ask for a transfer.
BlackberryOpposite31 4 points 1y ago
She sounds exactly like my old manager that just transferred to an brand new interstate store. If it happens to be the same woman I would quit.
Separate_Revolution8 3 points 1y ago
Try to transfer and start looking at other coffee jobs! Your skill base will get you far, you can learn a lot and have fun. Worst case scenario you can find another hourly corporate job until something better comes up. Not worth it to stay.

This time last year, I was slinging caffeine for the entitled and greedy masses. It was fun, for a minute, but after 8 months of shift supervisorship, I just couldn't take it. My nostalgia for Starbucks lasted less than a week and then my mind totally moved on. QUIT when you can and you won't regret it.
francescugh 2 points 1y ago
id say bring up transferring and say you recently moved and the commutes too long of a drive. that way she doesnt take it personally and you get to keep your ASU benefit (im enrolled at asu and love it. i hope you do too).

I quit because I was getting better job offers even worked at a unionized starbucks till I got better job offers despite getting fired there. The pay and bullying made me quit. I got told by compliance that I was experiencing retaliations I got harrassed by past classmate at the job she tried to make me seem like I was just bad at working anything.
Shit talking about me since we went to college together.

I am able to escape starbuck now I am very grateful for it.

I got cyber harrassment from people on reddit because I enjoyed working at the starbucks. I am not stupid because you get to know yourself worth by being friendless for years as I have been. I don't own them anything even my mental health status because I took a part time job during covid-19. All of their fuckery that lead to me getting fired and their complaints and trolling online is bullshit. It doesn't ruin the experience as a costumer for me.

I just don't go through the store physically anymore at those locations. I just now make it for myself.
JHOOOOBI 1 points 1y ago
It’s so damn worth it. I left because I was literally a hair away from driving my car into oncoming traffic just thinking about going to work, and then crying in my car afterwards. I used to work at an interstate store (my first store) and it’s AWFUL. Always busy. Put yourself first. Your mental health and wellbeing is priority numero uno.
omaha-mike-golf 1 points 1y ago
The only reason I stayed is ASU. I wanna leave too but my GPA before ASU was too low to get any scholarships anywhere else. It’s this job or quit my education. If the tuition assistance isn’t worth it to you, run and never look back
Internal-Ad-8820 1 points 1y ago
It's extremely worth it to quit and not look back. I did it a few weeks ago, quit without notice and it felt SO damn good. I've never quit without notice in my 19 years of working. But I did with Starbucks. They didn't respect me, so I decided not to respect them. Please for your sanity it's a very cathartic release for your soul.

I just no notice quit my kiosk, this is the first time I've ever done this to a job like this in my sort of short work history(health issues).

Hired on they made it sound super relaxed and accommodating, part time, which is what I was looking for after a yr+ of being quarantined.
I might make a whole post about it eventually, but bottom line is they only have 5 people there max. For 3 shifts overlapping. Not at all any wiggle room for callouts if necessary(like with this snow storm that made it hazardous to go to work for me, my first 2 call outs) and I had my autoimmune med infusion listed 2 months in advance and they didn't bother to tell me until a week before that it was during a blackout date and not going to work, I told them make it work because it's too late to reschedule lmao.

That and being scheduled 8 days in a row twice (a couple months apart) after being hired for part time, but it still counted because it was under full time hours and split weeks(Thursday to thursday. paycheck was nice but my body was not)

Today sealed the deal when I finally made it in despite slip n sliding a bit on my way there, and after being gone for 2 days it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Clearly they're leaving stuff because they knew i would do it. Also trying to get me to train people when I'm not certified or know how to.

So yeah. I'm gone lol. I might try a corporate store eventually if they can keep scheduling consistent (i work best when I have a set routine not waiting 2 days before the week schedule is out to know what I'm doing. can't plan anything like that)

Almost feel bad for ditching them but also they Clearly haven't shown any respect to me.
Internal-Ad-8820 1 points 1y ago
God that's crazy I can't believe they tried to force all of those conditions on you 💀 Honestly corporate store is not necessarily going to be much better, since those issues that you dealt with are also very much present in corporate stores. Some partners get lucky and have a good store, but more often than not the stores are awful and only getting worse. Seriously congratulations though for getting out of that bad situation! Respect is earned and it works both ways
SakasuCircus 1 points 1y ago
Yeah the corporate stores near me seem to be a bit of a mess, especially with understaffing right now.

But thank you! I'm trying not to feel too guilty for ditching them but I know they don't really deserve it.
Internal-Ad-8820 1 points 1y ago
The guilt will go away with time, and you'll feel so good about it lol. It's just like getting out of an abusive relationship when it gets that bad, which is sad to say about a huge corporation like Starbucks

If you’re actually trying to make good money, just get another job. I’ve been working there for 2 years and my last day is next week and although I love my coworkers, it’s just not enough for me to pay the bills. The stress of the job is also a lot, having to deal with peoples unrealistic expectations and impatience is a lot. I definitely recommend moving on within the next 2-3 years if you do stay tho. I have coworkers who have been working there for 20+ years and only make a few dollars more than me.

I quit and went back to serving and I love it
